
CBI seizes Rs 1.5 crore cash from PWD engineer arrested in bribe case
New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) The CBI has seized Rs 1.60 crore from a PWD executive engineer here who was arrested while taking Rs 30,000 bribe, officials said Tuesday.
Kalu Ram Meena, posted as executive engineer, Judiciary Civil Division-2, PWD, Rouse Avenue District Court Complex, allegedly demanded three per cent of the bills, to be cleared by him, as bribe from a contractor, they said.
Meena was arrested on Monday during a trap operation when he was taking a bribe of Rs 30,000 from the contractor who is the complainant in the case, the officials said.
'Searches were conducted at Delhi and Jaipur which led to recovery of Rs 1.60 crore cash as well as property documents and bank account having sufficient balance," a CBI spokesperson said in a statement. PTI ABS KVK KVK

CBI arrests Kovai man from Karur in 2016 money-doubling case
KARUR: A CBI team from Odisha on Saturday arrested a 49-year-old man from his relative's house in Karur in connection with a money-doubling scam unearthed in 2016. The suspect, G Sivakumar of Peelamedu in Coimbatore, is accused of being part of a financial firm that cheated hundreds of people from across the country to the tune of Rs 18.25 crore by promising huge returns against a one-time deposit of Rs 10,000. According to the Karur police, G Sivakumar was an additional director of Rightmax Technotrade International Limited, which operated out of Bengaluru from 2016. The firm lured hundreds, including several from Odisha, by promising a return of Rs 1,000 per month for 33 consecutive months against a one-time deposit of Rs 10,000. When the company failed to fulfil its promise, depositors from Ganjam and Gajapati districts in Odisha lodged complaints with the CBI, the police said. Based on the complaints, the CBI registered a case in 2016, accusing the firm of cheating investors to the tune of Rs 18.25 crore. In 2017, the CBI arrested Srinivasan (56) of Coimbatore, Gunasekaran (52) and Murugavel (52) of Pollachi, and Rabindrakumar Jine (48) of Odisha, who were all directors of the said firm. Sivakumar, however, went into hiding. Following a tip-off that Sivakumar was in Karur, a CBI team from Odisha arrived in Karur on Saturday and nabbed him from his relative's house in Ganapathipalayam. He was taken to the Thanthonimalai police station and later produced before the judicial magistrate court in Karur. He was subsequently taken to Odisha, the Karur police added. Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari's son Umar arrested in Lucknow on cheating, forgery charges
LUCKNOW: Umar Ansari, son of late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly submitting forged documents in court in a bid to recover his father's seized properties. According to a statement issued by the Superintendent of Police, Ghazipur, the properties were seized under provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters Act. A petition was filed in the court seeking the release of the properties belonging to the jailed gangster who had died of cardiac arrest at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Banda in March this year. It is alleged that Umar Ansari intended to secure illegal gains and submitted forged documents reportedly bearing the fake signatures of his mother, Afshan Ansari, in the court, the statement said. Afshan Ansari is currently absconding and carries a reward of Rs 50,000 on her head. "Upon learning of the fraudulent activity, a case was registered against Umar Ansari at the Mohammadabad police station, with charges filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)," read the statement. Umar Ansari has been arrested, and a further probe is underway, the statement added. According to police sources, a team of Ghazipur police arrested Umar Ansari from Lucknow.

Six more held in Tiruppur advocate murder case
TIRUPPUR: The police on Sunday arrested six more persons in connection with the murder of advocate L Muruganantham. The accused were identified as Balamurugan (44), Sathish Kumar (44), Sasikumar (33), Sudarson (40), Annadurai (36) and Muruganantham (50) of Namakkal. L Muruganantham (41) was hacked to death on July 28 near Thenmalar Matriculation Higher Secondary School. The Dharapuram police had registered a case under sections 191 (2), 191 (3), 103 (1), 109 (1), 351 (3) of BNS. Earlier, the police arrested Muruganantham's uncle and owner of Thenmalar School R Dhandapani (65), and a gang of five — N Nattudurai of Dharapuram, S Dakshinamurthy, C Nagarajan, of Tiruchy, K Ram of Salem, and S Sundaran of Namakkal — who surrendered before Dharapuram police on July 28. 'We had been interrogating the six arrested initially, including Dhandapani. Based on the inputs, we arrested six more persons, including three of Dhandapani's relatives, on Sunday. Further investigation is on,' a police officer said. 'Muruganantham's family is demanding a CBI investigation. They are yet to receive his body. A case has been filed in the Madras High Court on behalf of the family, seeking a CBI investigation. The petition will come up for hearing on Monday,' said Velu Sivakumar, district coordinator of Human Rights Defenders Federation.
