Matthew McConaughey lost out on 'Titanic' lead role after refusing director's request

Fox News3 days ago
Matthew McConaughey almost starred in one of the biggest movies of the '90s.
In an excerpt of "Titanic" producer Jon Landau's memoir, "The Bigger Picture," obtained by Matthew Belloni's What I'm Hearing newsletter, the late producer detailed McConaughey's audition for the role of Jack Dawson in the Academy Award-winning movie.
"We brought him in to do a scene with Kate [Winslet]. You want to check for chemistry — not just how people look on film, but how they interact," Landau wrote. "Kate was taken with Matthew, his presence and charm. Matthew did the scene with the drawl."
According to the book, after McConaughey completed the scene in his signature Texas accent, director James Cameron told the actor, "That's great, now let's try it a different way," to which the actor allegedly responded, "No. That was pretty good. Thanks."
"Let's just say, that was it for McConaughey," Landau recalled in the book.
The role famously went to Leonardo DiCaprio, who had made a name for himself in films such as "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" and "Romeo + Juliet" beforehand. However, his role as Jack Dawson led him to become an international star and teen heartthrob.
McConaughey has spoken about his audition process for the film in the past, telling Rob Lowe during a 2021 appearance on his podcast, "Literally! With Rob Lowe," that after his audition, he "really thought it was going to happen."
"So I went and read with Kate Winslet, and it was not one of the auditions — they filmed it so it was like into screen test time," he said. "After we left, you know, it was one of those ones where they, like, followed me, and when we got outside, they were like, 'That went great.' I mean, kind of, like, hugs. I really thought it was going to happen. It did not."
Winslet, who went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Rose Dewitt Bukater, recalled auditioning with McConaughey while on "The Late Show" in 2017, calling his audition "completely fantastic," but admitted the movie would have been different if he was cast, adding "It just wouldn't have been the whole 'Jack and Rose, Kate and Leo' thing."
While he did miss out on starring in the epic love story, McConaughey's career did not suffer. He went on to win an Academy Award for his role in "Dallas Buyers Club" and was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on season one of "True Detective."
While on Lowe's podcast, McConaughey also shut down the longstanding rumor that he was offered the role of Jack and turned it down, saying he even asked the film's director, James Cameron, to confirm he was never offered the part.
"Not factual. I did not get offered that role," he said. "For a while, I was saying, 'I gotta find that agent. They're in trouble…'I did not ever get the offer."

32 Things That Happened One Year Ago That Will Seriously Warp Your Brain

The summer of 2024 feels like it was, as the Titanic meme says, 84 years ago. Looking back, it truly was another world/universe, so let's look at what life looked like way back when... Just one year ago, the summer of 2024 kicked off with the Four Seasons Orlando Baby. Moo Deng was born. She fell off hard, no offense. And everyone was trying to do that JoJo Siwa "Karma" dance. Just one year ago, Biden announced he was dropping out. Kamala announced she was stepping in. And Charli XCX had this super viral "kamala IS brat" tweet: "Brat summer" feels like another dimension. A little over 365 days ago, the Paris Olympics kicked off with a Lady Gaga performance. Hot, nerdy pommel horse guy entered our lives last summer. Simone Biles also cemented herself as the greatest of all time. Simpler times! There was the *blessed* pole vaulter. We were sharing the gun guy memes. I personally saw myself more in him: And we had Raygun. I miss her. Oh, and Tom Cruise had that dramatic Olympic entrance/exit thing. In the summer of 2024, just one year ago, Barry Keoghan and Sabrina Carpenter were still dating. "Espresso" was the song of the summer, something we unfortunately don't have now. Wicked wasn't even out yet. And everyone was talking about falling out of coconut trees. Like, this is the stuff people were tweeting: Just one year ago, the hottest MAGA accessory was a bandage on the ear. Jen and Ben officially filed for divorce. And Justin Timberlake got a DUI, and the "ruin the tour" meme was born. Believe it or not, "Hawk Tuah Girl" has only been in your life for a year. She became *popular* in summer 2024. "Very demure, very mindful" was *the* saying. JD Vance couch memes were all over your timeline. And Tim Walz was announced as Kamala's running mate (he also made JD Vance couch jokes). Just ONE YEAR AGO, Lil Jon was the star of the DNC. He did that 50-state roll call. Obama made a Trump small penis joke. And lastly, hope was in the air, like people were truly libbing out. What a time to be alive.

Why 'White Lotus' creator Mike White is returning to 'Survivor'

When "Survivor" host Jeff Probst decided to bring back contestant Mike White for the reality competition's 50th season, he knew White would be showing his hand. White, a one-time participant on the show, has since become the famed mastermind behind "White Lotus," the popular resort-based drama on HBO. "The thing that's most interesting about Mike playing for the second time is there is no hiding that he is the biggest writer, director, show creator in the world right now, and he wanted to come back and play 'Survivor,'" Probst told the Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Aug. 7. "So I can understand why people had a reaction." 'White Lotus' creator Mike White's next tropical island is return to 'Survivor' The long-running competition show features a group of "castaways" facing off in challenges on a remote island for the chance to take home $1 million. Among the first crop of reality shows to make it big when the format burst onto the scene in the early 2000s, it requires a mix of physical strength and personal cunning to forge alliances and read other contestants. While Probst, the show's longtime host, acknowledges the oddity of an Emmy-winning director opting to return to the dusty isles of survivordom, he thinks people aren't asking the right questions. "I'm surprised people aren't asking, 'Why is one of the greatest writers in the history of Hollywood so interested in 'Survivor?'" he told THR. "What is it that Mike is learning about humans and behavior and situational ethics that he applies to his craft? Because I think that's part of why he does it — he's out there in a real incubator of human behavior where you never know what's going to happen, but what you do know is that if you show up to play 'Survivor', you can study it." 'Survivor' Season 50 cast: Which returning players are playing for $1 million? White first appeared on the "Survivor's" 37th season in 2018, landing in the runner-up spot and gaining a cult popularity among the show's fanbase along the way. His biggest hit, "White Lotus," which channels the darker side of the human spirit and the downfalls of excess, works in tandem with his experience on the show. "When you watch 'White Lotus,' what are you watching? You're watching human behavior all day," Probst continued. "I think that's part of the reason Mike is back, and if you don't understand that, maybe you're asking the wrong question." White, a celebrated screenwriter, also penned and starred in "School of Rock" and "Chuck & Buck." "He wanted to come back and step away from his Hollywood career for a moment and play this game that he loves to see how it will go," Probst added, explaining that he thinks White is interested to see how his own newfound fame will factor into his standing among fellow contestants. "He's arguably the single best storyteller we've ever had on 'Survivor,'" he told THR. "I'm grateful to consider him a friend, because I learn from Mike every day. You're talking (about) one of the best of all time, and the fact that he said yes to 'Survivor' still brings a smile on my face.' When is 'Survivor' Season 50 airing? No official premiere date has been released, but the show's 50th season is expected to begin airing on CBS in spring 2026.

Celebrities React To Dean Cain Joining ICE

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been ramping up efforts to find new recruits, like offering student loan forgiveness, $50,000 signing bonuses, lowering qualifications, and recruitment videos from known MAGA-lebrities like this actor who was once well-known for playing Superman. Actor Dean Cain, best known for playing Superman in the early '90s series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, has been a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump and has now joined ICE. On Aug. 6, he told Jesse Watters on Fox, "I put out a recruitment video yesterday. I'm actually a sworn deputy sheriff and a reserve police officer. I wasn't part of ICE, but once I put that out there and you put a little blurb on your show, it went crazy. So now I've spoken with some of the officials over at ICE, and I will be sworn in as an ICE agent ASAP. So they'll have 88,001 recruits for their 10,000 positions." Dean said he plans to do whatever Director of ICE, Todd Lyons, wants him to do, because he believes "This country was built on patriots stepping up, whether it was popular or not, and doing the right thing." In an Aug. 8 Instagram video, actor and activist John Leguizamo slammed Dean, saying, "What kind of loser volunteers to be an ICE officer? What a moron. Dean Cain, your pronouns are has/been." John is a longtime advocate for representation, even recently celebrating the diversity of the slate of nominees on stage at the 2024 Emmys. "For years I didn't complain about the limited roles my people were offered… Turns out not complaining doesn't change anything. So for the past few years, I've been complaining." In response to John's video calling Dean a "has been" Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr. in the latest Superman movie, responded that he "never was." Tatum O'Neal, the youngest person to ever win an Academy Award in 1974, responded with six clapping emojis. Director Lee Daniels simply laughed at John's statement. Comedian Margaret Cho blasted Dean for joining ICE in an Instagram video. "Why would you join ICE and encourage people to join ICE when your ancestors were interned in World War II?" she asked. "You're Japanese. You're not even white... I know you, and you are not white. You have never been white. And no matter how many of these white activities that you participate in, it's never going to make that happen... No matter how racist you are, no matter how wrong you act... Always wrong, never white." Margaret is referring to the fact that Dean, born Dean Tanaka, is half-Japanese on his father's side. "Tanaka is my given name, and it's funny that people are like, 'Well, you tried to hide that.' It's tattooed on my ankle,' he said in a July 2025 interview with Variety. 'My family was interned in the Minidoka internment camp in Idaho. That was a horrible injustice, but I don't think that I deserve any sort of reparations." We'll keep you updated if any other celebrities speak up about the former '90s Superman joining the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
