While the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is investigating the technical aspects which led to the crash of Air India Flight AI-171 on Thursday, the government has formed a high level committee led by the home secretary to look into the broader aspect of strengthening of aviation security landscape in the country.'While AAIB will investigate the technical aspects of the crash, another high level committee has been formed led by the home secretary, which includes officials from the central and state government. The committee, apart from looking into the reason for the crash, will also look into overall aviation safety and strengthening of aviation safety in the future,' said Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha in a press briefing on Saturday.'The composition of the high level committee involves people from various backgrounds and people we feel can bring in a lot of expertise and value to the committee which is going to investigate in a holistic way into the incident,' said Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, who was also present at the briefing. The minister highlighted that the high level committee is going to do its own investigation into the crash of the Air India aircraft which is going to be independent of all the other investigations that are going to happen.AAIB has already initiated the investigation into the Air India crash . The black box or the flight data recorder of the aircraft, which contains crucial information and data about the aircraft's flight behaviour, was recovered from the crash site on Friday evening.'The AAIB team believes that this decoding of the black box is going to give an in depth insight into what would have actually happened during the process of the crash or moments before the crash itself,' said Naidu. The crash involved the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft which was powered by two GEnx-1B engines manufactured by GE Aerospace. While the home secretary will be the chairman of the committee, other members include civil aviation secretary, an additional secretary from home ministry, one representative from the state govt of Gujarat and State Disaster Response Authority, Police Commissioner Ahmedabad, director general of inspection and safety from the Indian Air Force, director general from Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, director general of Directorate General of Civil Aviation, special director from Intelligence Bureau and director from the Directorate of Forensic Sciences Services. While the Boeing 787 widebody aircraft manufactured in the US has faced regulatory scrutiny by the US' civil aviation regulator Federal Aviation Administration in the past, the Air India accident was the first instance when the aircraft model faced a fatal crash.'...after the incident happened, we also felt that there is a need to do an extended surveillance into the Boeing 787 series,' said Naidu.'So to the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation), we have also given an order to do the extended surveillance for the 787 planes. There are 34 in our Indian aircraft fleet today. I believe that 8 have already been inspected and then with immediate urgency, all of them are going to be done,' added Naidu.Air India in a statement said that the airline has completed such checks on nine of the Boeing 787 aircraft and are on track to complete the process for the remaining 24 aircraft within the timeline provided by the regulator. Air India operates a fleet of 33 Boeing 787 aircraft, which are crucial for their long-haul international flight operations.

Air India To Insure Passengers On All Flights For Next Few Months After Ahmedabad Tragedy

Last Updated: A London-bound Air India Flight AI-171 crashed into a residential area of Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing all but one of its 242 passengers and over 30 on the ground. Following the devastating Air India accident that killed more than 260 people, Air India has decided to insure every passenger on all its flights as a precautionary measure, according to a source in the airline. As per the source, each passenger will be covered for approximately Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. This move will remain in effect for at least the next few months. Three days after the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, which has so far claimed over 270 lives, hospital authorities on Sunday confirmed the identification of 47 victims through DNA matching, including that of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Rupani was among the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound Air India flight AI-171 that crashed on Thursday. Only one passengers managed to miraculously survive the crash on that day, while more than 30 people were killed on the ground. Due to the severe condition of many bodies, as they are burnt or disfigured, authorities are relying on DNA matching for identification. '"A total of 47 plane crash victims have been identified so far through DNA matching. Of these, the bodies of 24 victims have been handed over to their respective families. These deceased were from Rajasthan and different parts of Gujarat," Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajnish Patel told reporters. Meanwhile, Air India on Sunday said it is working closely with other Tata group companies to provide every possible assistance to the families and loved ones of the plane crash victims. The airline in a statement also said that over 400 family members have reached Ahmedabad and are being assisted by its teams on the ground. It had earlier promised complete transparency in the investigation into establishing the cause of the accident. PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visited the crash site to assess the situation on Sunday. He was briefed on the sequence of events and interacted with the injured at the Civil Hospital. 'I am very pained by the enormity of the tragedy. Everybody is sad. It is our duty to share grief and express our feelings for the victims," Mishra told reporters. Authorities announced Sunday that the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder, had been recovered. This may offer investigators more clues about what went wrong. There were 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese and a Canadian on board the flight, as well as 12 crew members.
