Asean–US tariffs: Malaysia's stance driven by strategy, not showmanship

KUALA LUMPUR: The allegation by a former Singaporean diplomat that only Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim supports Asean's collective approach in addressing tariff issues with the United States has been described as entirely baseless.
Furthermore, the suggestion that Anwar's efforts are merely a ploy to gain international prominence has been labelled deeply troubling and undiplomatic.
Responding to the remarks made by former Singaporean diplomat Bilahari Kausikan, special officer for (international relations) to the Deputy Prime Minister, Neow Choo Seong, said the claim reflected a fundamental misunderstanding of Malaysia's principled foreign policy under Anwar's leadership.
Neow stressed that Malaysia had long championed Asean unity, particularly in confronting growing geopolitical and economic tensions resulting from unilateral trade measures.
"Our approach is guided by strategic wisdom, not political theatrics.
"For a former senior diplomat like Bilahari to dismiss Malaysia's efforts as cheap rhetoric is insulting and demonstrates a disregard for regional unity and the spirit of mutual respect among Asean member states," he said in a Facebook post today.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Bilahari claimed that every Asean member state, including Malaysia, prefers to engage with the US on a bilateral rather than collectively.
He said that it was impractical for Asean to address tariff issues as a bloc due to the diversity of tariffs and economic structures across member countries, and alleged that only Anwar believes otherwise — or is pretending to do so in a bid to distinguish himself.
Neow, who is also MCA Youth information chief, said it was even more disappointing that Bilahari's remarks were reshared by Singapore's First Lady, Ho Ching, who also chairs the Temasek Trust.
He said that her apparent endorsement only exacerbated the situation.
He added that individuals who continue to represent influential institutions or national legacies, such as Bilahari and Ho Ching, carry a responsibility to foster unity rather than division.
"If they cannot contribute constructively to regional discourse, they should refrain from making statements that erode trust and heighten tensions," he said.
Neow stressed that Malaysia would not tolerate disparaging remarks or undue criticism for advocating a united Asean voice and would not be intimidated by condescending rhetoric disguised as personal opinion.
"Our stance is rooted in the long-term stability and integrity of Asean as a bloc that must rise collectively to meet the challenges of our time — not splinter or be manipulated by external pressures or internal cynicism.
"Malaysia will continue to resolutely defend its national interests and promote Asean unity with clarity, conviction, and unwavering resolve," he added.

Anwar congratulates Harimau Malaya on 4-0 win over Vietnam

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated the national football team on their recent feat in defeating Vietnam in the Asian Cup Group F qualifier. In a Facebook post, Anwar described Harimau Malaya's performance during last night's match as the beginning of a stronger comeback. "Congratulations, Harimau Malaya. Let yesterday's victory be the start of a more glorious comeback," he said. Meanwhile, Bernama reported that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) expressed its gratitude to Anwar and the Malaysian government for their full assistance and support, which contributed to Harimau Malaya's resounding 4-0 victory over Vietnam at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. In a statement, FAM announced that apart from financial support through special allocations for Harimau Malaya, the government also facilitated the documentation process for new heritage players, enabling them to feature in the second Group F match of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Final Qualifiers in Saudi Arabia. "It is hoped that the full support from the country's top leadership and fans will continue to inspire Harimau Malaya's performance in upcoming international matches, en route to becoming one of the giants of Asian football," the statement read. Before more than 60,000 spectators yesterday, Malaysia ended an 11-year winless streak against Vietnam with goals from Joao Figueiredo in the 49th minute, Rodrigo Holgado (59th), Corbin Ong (67th), and Dion Cools (89th). The result puts Malaysia at the top of Group F with six points, while Vietnam sits in second place with three.

National Trades Union Congress exploring options to match retrenched Jetstar Asia staff to roles at SIA Group: Labour chief

Jetstar Asia said it will support the workers with retrenchment packages and employment support. - ST SINGAPORE: The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is exploring possible opportunities to match retrenched Jetstar Asia employees, including crew and corporate staff, to suitable roles with the Singapore Airlines Group, said labour chief Ng Chee Meng. Over 500 employees from Jetstar Asia will be retrenched following the closure of the Singapore-based low-cost airline on July 31. In a Facebook post on June 11, Ng said that the NTUC Aerospace and Aviation Cluster will work with Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Changi Airport Group to identify opportunities for the affected employees as well. He said: 'The news of Jetstar Asia's closure is a hit for the many employees of the airline. They have contributed much to the airline over the years.' He added that the NTUC and Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) were informed of the retrenchments in advance, and SMMWU has been working closely with Jetstar Asia to support the workers. The retrenchment benefits provided are in line with the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Excess Manpower and Responsible Retrenchment, but support goes beyond just financial compensation, Ng added. Starting next week, NTUC and NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute will be on-site at Changi Airport Terminal 1 to provide direct support, including career coaching, skills upgrading, and employability assistance, he said. In a statement on Wednesday (June 11), Jetstar Asia said it will support workers with retrenchment packages, employment support, or provide them with other opportunities within the Qantas group or with other airlines and aviation companies in Singapore. The airline's closure is part of a 'strategic restructure' by its parent company, Australian flag carrier Qantas. Retrenched employees will receive a redundancy payment of four weeks per year of service, a bonus for this financial year, a special 'thank you' payment as well as other benefits. In a separate statement, the Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) said it has worked closely with management and negotiated with the company to ensure that affected members and workers receive fair compensation. SMMWU is affiliated with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). Jetstar Asia has been unionised since 2009. An inter-agency task force on retrenchment said in a separate statement that it is working closely with Jetstar and the SMMWU to support the affected workers. Called the Taskforce for Responsible Retrenchment and Employment Facilitation, it comprises the Ministry of Manpower, Workforce Singapore, the NTUC and the NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute. 'Our priority is to help the affected employees with employment facilitation," said the taskforce in a statement. - The Straits Times/ANN

Apec finance ministers to unveil new roadmap

Deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying said both Apec and Asean play a critical role in providing platforms for coordinated and collective action among their members. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) finance ministers will unveil a new roadmap in October to replace the existing Cebu Action Plan, deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying said today. The five-year plan identifies medium-term initiatives and deliverables aimed at achieving Apec's Putrajaya Vision of 'an open, dynamic, resilient, and peaceful Asia-Pacific community', she said. 'It is critical for Asean members to work together within Apec, to ensure that our common priorities in Southeast Asia are well-embedded in this new Asia Pacific roadmap and that initiatives in Asean and Apec are consistent with each other and mutually supportive,' she said at the Asean-BAC and Asia Pacific Financial Forum here. She said that both Apec and Asean play a critical role in providing platforms for coordinated and collective action among their members, as well as for enhanced government and regulatory engagement with the private sector. She added that new business models and rapid advances in technology could help redesign financing solutions to better serve micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and marginalised consumers. Lim said digital technologies like blockchain, artificial intelligence and quantum computing, as well as new products such as crypto and tokenised assets and digital currencies carried risks that were not yet fully understood. 'Enabling their safe and effective deployment would also require legal, policy and regulatory reforms, changes in industry practices and collaborative efforts to educate consumers, industry practitioners and regulators.' 'Private sector also to blame for Asean policy failures' Separately, Asean-BAC chair Nazir Razak said that while governments often faced scrutiny for policy shortcomings, private companies in the region were also responsible for failures to follow through on initiatives. 'As we contend with tech disruptions amid a backdrop of diminishing trust, the actions of state and regional actors are crucial. Poor execution and follow through will prove very costly.' He also lamented the slowdown in intra-Asean trade and investments and the ability of regional companies to attract investment into the region. However, he highlighted bright spots such as the expanding Asean QR code linkage as a critical milestone towards seamless payment connectivity. 'Digitalisation is the great enabler of financial inclusion but only if we ensure that it lifts all boats, not just the large or connected.'
