
Saudi Arabia elected chair of Asia region of World Meteorological Organization

CAIRO — The members of Regional Association II (Asia) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), have elected Saudi Arabia, represented by Chief Executive Officer of the National Center for Meteorology Dr. Ayman Ghulam, as chair of the region. The 18th session, which was held virtually, was attended by representatives of Asian member states and relevant regional and international organizations specializing in meteorology and climate.
Dr. Ghulam was elected by acclamation, reflecting the Kingdom's esteemed position and pioneering role in advancing meteorological systems at the regional and international levels. The election also comes in recognition of Saudi Arabia's notable achievements in atmospheric monitoring, application of advanced technologies, and enhancement of climate services quality.
Dr. Ghulam emphasized the Kingdom's commitment to supporting approved regional initiatives, facilitating the exchange of technical expertise and knowledge, and enhancing cooperation mechanisms among member states. He noted that these efforts aim to improve meteorological and climate services, as well as to address urgent environmental challenges.
He stated that Saudi Arabia will launch comprehensive training and qualification programs for technical personnel, improve forecasting and monitoring infrastructure, and enable member states to benefit from successful experiences and national capabilities. Dr. Ghulam added that these initiatives are expected to have a positive impact on community safety and promote sustainable development throughout the region.

The Ministry of Health monitored a number of heat stress cases among pilgrims on the Day of Arafah. In response, the ministry strongly emphasized the critical importance of avoiding direct exposure to the sun until 4 p.m. to safeguard pilgrims' health. The ministry urged pilgrims to use umbrellas, increase their water intake, and adhere to group planning. It underscored the continuous efforts of medical teams to monitor and treat cases, all as part of the health sector's comprehensive endeavors for a safe and healthy Hajj.

Jabal Al-Rahmah in Arafat welcomes pilgrims amid enhanced measures for comfort
Saudi Gazette report ARAFAT — Jabal Al-Rahmah or Mount of Mercy in Arafat welcomed large number of pilgrims who started gathering from early morning, spreading across its slopes to pray and seek mercy and forgiveness. This prominent landmark, located 17 kilometers from the Grand Mosque and rising about 65 meters high, holds deep religious significance as the place where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) delivered his Farewell Sermon. Reflecting the leadership's commitment to pilgrim welfare, new projects totaling 196,000 square meters have been implemented around Jabal Al-Rahmah to combat heat stress. These initiatives include 1,200 square meters of canopies equipped with 129 misting fans, moderating the atmosphere and reducing temperatures to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for pilgrims.

World's largest cooling system activated at Grand Mosque ahead of Hajj 1446
Saudi Gazette report MAKKAH — The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque has activated the largest cooling system of its kind in the world, as part of preparations for the 1446 Hajj season. The system boasts a total capacity of 155,000 tons of cooling. The air conditioning infrastructure of the Grand Mosque relies on two main stations: Al-Shamiya Station, with a capacity of 120,000 tons, and Ajyad Station, with a capacity of 35,000 tons. These stations cover the entire mosque complex, including all expansion areas, ensuring pilgrims experience moderate and comfortable temperatures ranging from 22°C to 24°C. To maintain optimal air quality, the system integrates advanced purification technologies capable of removing 95% of airborne impurities. This ensures a clean and safe environment for pilgrims, particularly during the peak summer heat. Proactive and continuous maintenance is being conducted by the Haram Authority. This includes the replacement of key components, securing work sites, and efficient resource management to accommodate heightened demand during Hajj.
