Punjab: Majithia's close aide Sabi joins Congress

Hindustan Times5 hours ago

Three leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal, including Sarbjot Singh Sabi, considered a close confidante of Bikram Singh Majithia, joined Congress on Monday.
The other two leaders are Rajinder Deepa from Sunam and Anil Thakur from Mukerian.
They were inducted into the party fold by the Congress general secretary and in-charge Punjab affairs Bhupesh Bhagel in the presence of the state president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, leader of Opposition in Punjab assembly Partap Singh Bajwa and other senior party leaders.
Sabi, 47, had unsuccessfully contested the 2022 assembly election from Mukerian constituency and bagged nearly 30,000 votes.
Sabi had joined Akali Dal at a young age and was appointed circle president of SAD when he was barely 22. He went on to become Hoshiarpur district president and Doaba zonal president. He also remained chairman of Hoshiarpur zila parishad.
The move has come as a big jolt to SAD, which is struggling to resurrect itself after suffering setbacks on political and panthic fronts.
Sources close to Sabi said Majithia was in the know of his decision.
Along with Majithia, Sabi had openly opposed the unceremonious removal of Giani Raghbir Singh as Akal Takht jathedar, which had irked SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Talking to HT, Sabi said that SAD leadership itself was responsible for the party's downfall and it has lost the trust of the Sikh community.
'I had urged Sukhbir long back to seek forgiveness from the community for the wrongs but he did not pay any heed. Even today he has not mended his ways,' Sabi said, alleging that the SAD leaders were now trying to cosy up with the BJP, a party they abused all these years.
'It is difficult to work with such two-faced people', he said.
Sabi said that the Congress still worked within a system and its biggest asset was its secular credentials. Asked if he would seek Congress' ticket for the next assembly polls, he said it was for the party to decide.
'My job is to work and I will put in my best efforts', he added.
Bhagel said it's a sign that Congress is making a comeback in Punjab.
'Coming events cast their shadow,' he remarked while suggesting that senior leaders from other political parties were looking forward to joining the Congress.
'This is just the beginning as the winds of change have started blowing in Punjab', Warring said, adding that people of the state were fed up with the current AAP regime.
Bajwa said that the three leaders would further strengthen the Congress in Punjab.

Robert Vadra Skips Enforcement Directorate Summons Again

New Delhi: Businessman Robert Vadra, husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, has once again skipped the summons by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the ongoing money laundering probe linked to fugitive arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari. According to sources, Mr Vadra is currently abroad to attend his daughter's graduation ceremony. He had earlier missed a summons issued on June 10 as well, citing flu-like symptoms. The agency had issued fresh summons for Tuesday, June 17, asking Mr Vadra to join the investigation in Delhi. The ED is probing alleged links between Mr Vadra and two London properties said to be acquired by Sanjay Bhandari - one at 12, Bryanston Square and another at Grosvenor Hill Court, 13 Bourdon Street. Officials claim the Bryanston Square property was renovated on Mr Vadra's directions and funded by him, and that he stayed there on multiple occasions. The properties, along with certain land parcels in India, are being investigated as alleged "proceeds of crime" under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The agency had filed the money laundering case in 2016. Another key figure in the case is NRI businessman CC Thampi, who was arrested in 2020. Authorities claim Mr Thampi played a significant role in facilitating property deals for Mr Vadra through a Dubai-based company. Sanjay Bhandari, a 61-year-old fugitive arms dealer, is under investigation by multiple agencies - ED, CBI, Income Tax Department, and Delhi Police - for violations ranging from foreign exchange laws to the Official Secrets Act. Indian authorities have sent two extradition requests for Mr Bhandari, both certified by then UK Home Secretary Priti Patel in 2020. Although he was arrested in the UK, his extradition was blocked earlier this year by the King's Bench Division of the UK High Court, citing potential risks of mistreatment in Indian prisons. Mr Vadra has denied any connection, directly or indirectly, and termed the charges a "political witch hunt". The businessman said he was being "hounded and harassed".

Congress government committed to farmer welfare: Telangana Dy CM Bhatti

HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka reiterated the Congress government's commitment to farmers' welfare despite criticism from BRS leaders. Speaking at the Rythu Nestham programme, Vikramarka said the government had faced several challenges but had remained steadfast in assisting farmers. 'We have faced all sorts of challenges and have stood by farmers,' he said. Vikramarka alleged that BRS leaders were attempting to malign the government. 'While this government is providing help and cooperation to the people, BRS leaders are burning with jealousy. Even BRS leaders themselves have admitted their party is filled with evil spirits. Today, these spirits are making a spectacle. Chase them away, don't allow them into your villages,' he said. He outlined the government's vision for the agricultural sector, expressing hope that farmers would prosper and that crops would flourish. He assured that new welfare schemes would be introduced in the coming months. Vikramarka stressed that the Congress government had not discontinued any welfare scheme introduced by the previous regime and was implementing additional programmes aimed at supporting farmers. He pointed out that within three to four months of taking office, the government had deposited Rs 21,000 crore under the farmer loan waiver scheme, an initiative unmatched by any other state.

BJP workers wear CM masks, carry IPL trophy replica in protest over Bengaluru stampede; police detain several at Freedom Park

BENGALURU: Karnataka BJP workers on Tuesday staged a protest in Bengaluru, wearing face masks with images of chief minister Siddaramaiah and deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and carrying a replica of the IPL trophy. The protest was aimed at holding the Congress-led state government accountable for the recent stampede tragedy near Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives. Protesters demanded the immediate resignation of both top leaders. Police detained several BJP workers at Freedom Park, where they were holding protest. Authorities intervened, citing law and order concerns as the protest gained momentum. The stampede occurred during the IPL victory celebration for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), where an estimated 3 lakh people had gathered without adequate safety and crowd control arrangements. Leader of the opposition R Ashok has written to the chief minister, urging the government to convene an emergency session of the legislature to discuss the tragedy. He highlighted concerns over public safety, lapses in event organisation, and post-incident handling, alleging attempts to shield influential individuals involved in the planning. Karnataka government had suspended top police officials from Cubbon Park police station and announced the formation of a one-man commission headed by a retired High Court judge to investigate the incident.
