Special night for Louth volunteers who support Special Olympics athletes

On Thursday evening we headed for Byrne's Bar in Hill Street where a night of recognition was taking place for the volunteers who help out with the Special Olympics athletes to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sport for children and adults with a learning disability and a good crowd had turned out specially for the occasion.
I wasn't too long there when I met up with Caroline and David O'Hare from Kingswood who were in great form. David was fresh from the recent win of the Dundalk FC Futsal in a national competition and Caroline said it was a certificate presentation evening in appreciation of all the hard work put in down through the years. She went on to say, apart from the athletics, most of the other sports are finished for the season and this was a thank you night for everyone who helped out.

Ireland fall to 4-0 loss against India in series opener
Ireland suffered a 4-0 loss to Olympic bronze medalists India in the first of a two-game series at Pembroke this evening. Early attacking pressure from the visitors called the Irish defensive line into action in the opening minutes. India eventually managed to break the deadlock through Mandeep Singh, latching onto a pullback from the baseline to find the net on the back post. They added a second shortly after, with Harmanpreet Singh tucking away a penalty corner to double their lead before the end of the first quarter. Ireland grew into the game in the second quarter, applying pressure of the own early on and winning a number of penalty corners for their effort following some smart attacking play from Fergus Gibson and Adam McAllister. Luke Madeley's first effort forced a good save, with the second penalty corner resulting in a mis-trap. Despite the pressure, India did eventually add a third to their tally, Dilpreet Singh latching onto a loose ball to fire home on his reverse. Ireland almost pulled one back in the third quarter, Jermey Duncan coming close but his flick from a tight angle glanced off the crossbar, before the Indians made it 4-0 at the end of the quarter. The sides meet again in Pembroke tomorrow for the second and final game of the India Series before both depart for the Netherlands for the next stage of the FIH Pro League.

Novak Djokovic beats Cameron Norrie to rack up century at Roland Garros
Novak Djokovic roared into the French Open quarter-finals by dispatching Cameron Norrie 6-2 6-3 6-2 for his 100th match victory at Roland Garros on Monday to join Rafa Nadal in one of sport's most exclusive fraternities. The Serbian's determined performance ensured he became only the second man to win a century of matches at the Parisian Grand Slam following the retired Nadal (112), keeping him on track for a record 25th major at the site of his Olympic gold last year. It also made Roland Garros Djokovic's most successful Grand Slam in terms of match wins, bettering the 99 victories that he has at the Australian Open, although the 38-year-old has lifted the trophy a staggering 10 times at Melbourne Park. "It's a number which is very good and nice, but a 101st win is even better," Djokovic told the crowd in French. "It's not finished for me here the tournament and I feel very good and good to make history here. I hope there will be another win here in two days." By reaching the quarter-finals for the 16th straight year, Djokovic also became the oldest man entering the last eight at Roland Garros since 39-year-old Istvan Gulyas in 1971. Djokovic arrived in Paris having won his 100th tour-level trophy in an otherwise lacklustre year and has not dropped a set in the tournament so far to remind his much younger title rivals of his undiminished hunger for more milestones. He swapped breaks early on with Norrie in the first set but ran the 29-year-old ragged thereafter to win it before shrugging off another wobble on serve in a draining second set to pull away and double his advantage on Court Philippe Chatrier. Djokovic broke to love in the third game of the third set after an unforced error by Norrie and the former world number one never looked back from there to book a last-eight meeting with German third seed Alexander Zverev.
