Indian stocks closed Thursday's session with mild gains as investors remained cautious ahead of a high-stakes meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska tomorrow, which could influence tariff policy and risk sentiment.
The Nifty 50 ended the day with a modest gain of 0.05% at 24,631 points, while the S&P BSE Sensex rose 0.07% to 80,596. Though both benchmark indices logged only minor gains, they still managed to end the week higher with gains of over 1%, a relief for the bulls after six consecutive weeks of declines, marking the longest weekly losing streak in the past five years.
The broader markets also closed the week in positive territory, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 rising over 0.70% each.

Jake Tapper's hot mic moment steals the show amid Trump-Putin presser: 'Give me my…'

CNN's lead Washington anchor, Jake Tapper, was caught in a hot mic moment just before President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart held a press conference on Friday. The 56-year-old, seemingly frustrated, yelled 'give me my show back' as Anderson Cooper was on air. Tapper was apparently referring to the channel's shake-up earlier this year. Cooper responded, 'Your show is back.' Social media users posted the clip of the CNN anchors' exchange. 'Ooops CNN hot mic catches an angry Jake Tapper!!' one person pointed out on X, platform formerly known as Twitter. "All Jake Tapper wants is his show back, sounded like a baby crying for candy 'I am fine just give me my show back,' another one added. Trump-Putin press conference After meeting for over two hours, both presidents issued statements. Trump said that he and Putin did not reach an agreement on 'probably the most significant' aspect of their meeting, but there was a very good chance of getting there. "Many points were agreed to. There are just a very few that are left. Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there. We didn't get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there," Trump told reporters in Anchorage. Putin said the pair had hammered out an 'understanding' on Ukraine and warned Europe not to 'torpedo the nascent progress'. 'We expect that Kyiv and European capitals will perceive all this in a constructive manner and will not create any obstacles, will not make attempts to disrupt the emerging progress through provocations and behind-the-scenes intrigues,' he said. Trump then added that he has several calls to make after the Alaska summit. 'I'm going to start making a few phone calls and tell them what happened,' Trump told reporters.

Putin says reached an ‘understanding' with Trump on Ukraine, warns Europe not to ‘torpedo' progress

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday said that United States President Donald Trump and him had have reached an 'understanding' on the conflict in Ukraine, while warning Europe not to 'torpedo' the progress. Putin said that the agreements reached during the talks would serve as a starting point for settling the Ukraine conflict.(REUTERS) Both Trump and Putin held talks for about 2 1/2 hours in Alaska, with a focus on the resolution of the war in Ukraine. While both sides said that talks were 'constructive', no definitive details were provided on the finer points of the discussion. However, Putin said that the agreements reached during the talks would serve as a starting point for settling the Ukraine conflict and restoring the relations between Russia and US. 'I expect that today's agreements will become a reference point, not only for solving the Ukrainian problem, but will also launch the restoration of business-like, pragmatic relations between Russia and the United States,' Putin said. Trump called the meeting with Putin 'extremely productive', but suggested that a deal had not been finalised for ending the war. 'There's no deal until there's a deal,' Trump said at the press conference in Anchorage while standing alongside Putin. The US President said that there were 'many, many points' that both Putin and him had agreed on, adding that there were a couple of big points that were yet to be dealt with. 'There were many, many points that we agreed on, most of them. I would say a couple of big ones that we haven't quite gotten there but we've made some headway,' Trump said. He highlighted that while most of the points that the two had disagreed on were not that important, one was 'significant'. 'Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there. We didn't get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there,' Trump said.

Trump says Putin wants to ‘stop seeing' people being killed in Ukraine, but ‘we didn't get there'

United States President Donald Trump said on Friday, August 15, that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to 'stop seeing people being killed,' but they 'did not reach an agreement' on one of the most significant aspect of their meeting in Alaska. Addressing a joint press conference in Anchorage, Alaska after their summit, Trump said, 'Putin wants to stop seeing people be killed. Many points were agreed to. There are just a very few that are left. Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there. We didn't get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there.' President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin met for about 2 1/2 half hours on Friday at a summit in Alaska that started with a handshake, a smile and a ride in the presidential limousine – an unusually warm reception for a US adversary responsible for launching the largest land war in Europe since 1945.
