McLaren boss Zak Brown ‘not surprised' after F1 arch rival Christian Horner's shock Red Bull exit
Horner, 51, was relieved of his duties as team principal and F1 CEO at Red Bull Racing after 20 years in the role. Laurent Mekies, formerly of sister team Racing Bulls, has taken over ahead of this week's Belgian Grand Prix.
Yet Brown, who enjoyed several vocal squabbles with Horner in the last few years, believes the 'drama' at Red Bull in recent times inevitably led to Horner's downfall.
'Maybe the timing, but not the result,' Brown told Canadian sports channel TSN, when asked if he was surprised by Horner's exit.
'I think there's been a lot of drama there the last couple of years and it doesn't seem like that drama has been calming down, maybe been getting worse.
"So, I'm not surprised, anytime in the middle of the season. But we're head down on our championship. They've got Max [Verstappen] still knocking on the door, so we've got to pay attention to that. But, yeah, tremendous amount of success they've had.'
Horner led Red Bull to six constructors' titles and eight drivers' championships during his time in charge, but saw the team plunge into issues in recent years.
Red Bull were the only team in breach of the cost-cap in its initial year in 2021, while the investigation surrounding an allegation of 'inappropriate behaviour' against Horner – he was cleared twice – made headlines away from the racetrack at the start of last season.
Despite this, Brown expects Horner – who has been linked with Ferrari and Alpine – to return to the paddock in some capacity.
'Given his age and his history in motor racing, I'd be surprised if he didn't show up somewhere in motor racing," Brown added.
"But I don't know his other interests, whether he wants to go run a football team or what have you. So, we'll see.'
Meanwhile, there are just eight points between championship leader Oscar Piastri and McLaren teammate Lando Norris heading into this week's race at Spa-Francorchamps.

New Skoda Octavia Electric previewed by Vision O concept
Skoda has been trotting out excellent estate cars for decades now, but the new Vision O concept shows the Czech firm is looking to enter the all-electric estate market. This is our first official teaser of the Vision O, which is set to be unveiled at the Munich Motor Show in September. To ensure Skoda's forthcoming electric estate car will be just as competitive as its internal combustion-engined alternatives when it goes into production, it'll also be the first Skoda to use the Volkswagen Group's new SSP architecture. Skoda says the Vision O's design will present 'a consistent evolution of the Modern Solid design language' and it'll feature 'a sleek, distinctive silhouette'. The proportions look similar to the current Octavia Estate's, although the rear window appears to be a little more raked. We can also see some of the car's light signatures: the rears in particular look similar to those on the design study for Skoda's upcoming small eletric car, the Epiq. We also expect to see some form of Skoda's Tech-Deck front end that features on the facelifted Enyaq and new Elroq. It will position us to remain a major player in the estate segment.' Advertisement - Article continues below It's not yet known if the Vision O previews an electric alternative to the Skoda Octavia Estate, the Superb Estate, or both, although the new model is said to be around 4.7 metres long. That puts it more in line with the current Octavia than the larger Superb, yet by capitalising on its cab-forward design, the upcoming EV has the potential to offer more interior space than both its combustion-powered counterparts. The interior will share the exterior's simplified and modernised aesthetic and could potentially incorporate a portrait-aspect central display, like the one seen in the 7S Concept. However, Skoda should continue with its Smart Dials layout and retain most of the physical dials and buttons – just as we've seen in the current Superb and Kodiaq. We don't expect the production version of the Vision O to go on sale for a few years – and Skoda may yet decide to extend the lifespan of its petrol and hybrid estates. That strategy could align with parent company Volkswagen's Golf, the electric variant of which will sit on the same SSP architecture as the Skoda estate. Sport England to meet RFL over concerns with rugby league funding at stake
Sport England will meet the Rugby Football League in the coming weeks to air their concerns over developments at the governing body in a move which could have an impact on the sport's financial outlook. Rugby league is one of several sports in receipt of millions of pounds worth of funding from Sport England every year. That funding is critical to the ongoing existence of the sport, and is particularly important for the RFL, with continued adherence to the code for sports governance essential to maintain it. The RFL has been under scrutiny in recent months with its former chief executive, Nigel Wood, returning to the organisation initially as its interim chair following the resignation of his predecessor, Simon Johnson, in March. Wood was appointed by clubs to lead a strategic review of the professional game which recommended Super League expanding to 14 teams as early as 2026. That was approved by clubs at a meeting in Leeds on Monday, two weeks on from Wood's interim position as chair being made permanent. That code details that all key leadership appointments – such as chair of the governing body – have to follow recruitment processes that are deemed 'open and transparent' by Sport England. The Guardian has now had confirmation that meetings are planned in the coming weeks in light of Wood's installation as permanent chair. A Sport England spokesperson told the Guardian: 'All organisations in receipt of significant funding from Sport England must reach the standards of the Code for Sports Governance. This includes major leadership appointments following open and transparent recruitment processes. 'Following recent developments, we will meet with the leadership of the RFL in the coming weeks to address our concerns.' Tony Sutton, the RFL's CEO, said: 'The RFL is working with Sport England on a Governance Action Plan, following the resignations from the Board earlier in the year. The new board at the RFL remain totally committed to working towards full compliance with Sport England's Code for Sports Governance.' Wood's return was seen by many of his critics as controversial. Clubs elected to remove him as chief executive in 2018 and he was paid a severance package of over £300,000. He has since held the role of chair at Bradford Bulls, a role he relinquished in order to return to the RFL, though he remains a shareholder of the Championship club. However, those same clubs now feel he is the best individual to deliver an overhaul of the professional game, led by an expansion of Super League to 14 teams. The Guardian revealed earlier this week how Sky Sports were seeking answers from Super League on the decision to extend the competition. The RFL have been approached for comment.

Vasseur signs new long-term Ferrari contract to end Horner speculation
Ferrari have ended speculation about the future of their team principal Fred Vasseur by agreeing a new, multi-year contract with the Frenchman. The deal closes the door on speculation that the team were considering a move for Christian Horner. Vasseur, who was instrumental in bringing Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari, has been under pressure with the Scuderia underperforming in what was expected to be a strong season. The team are yet to win a grand prix win this year. Vasseur joined Ferrari in 2023, replacing Mattia Binotto and has been central in implementing an overhaul of the team, which has not won a drivers' title since 2007 and a constructors' championship since 2008. The team took five wins last season and finished second in the constructors' championship, leading to high expectations for Hamilton's first season with the Scuderia. However the expected step forward has not materialised and Ferrari remain firmly outpaced by McLaren who have established a dominant advantage over the rest of the field. This led to speculation, particularly in the Italian media, that Vasseur's future was in doubt with his contract set to close at the end of this season and suggestions that Ferrari were considering bringing in Horner, who was dismissed from his post at Red Bull three weeks ago. However before this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari announced it was to stick with Vasseur for the future. 'I'm grateful for the trust Ferrari continues to place in me. This renewal is not just a confirmation, it's a challenge to keep progressing, to stay focused, and to deliver,' said Vasseur. 'Over the past 30 months, we've laid strong foundations, and now we must build on them with consistency and determination. We know what's expected, and we're all fully committed to meeting those expectations and taking the next step forward together.' The Ferrari statement did not specify the length of the contract, noting only that it was a 'multi-year' deal and reaffirming their faith in the Frenchman to deliver success for the team. 'Fred joined the Scuderia at the beginning of 2023, bringing with him extensive motorsport experience and a proven ability to develop talent and build competitive teams across all levels of racing,' it read. 'Since then, he has laid a solid foundation with the ambition of returning Ferrari to the top of Formula One.' The team are currently second in the constructors' championship but a full 268 points behind McLaren. Hamilton enjoyed a victory in the sprint race in China earlier this year but, sixth in the championship, has still yet to score a podium after 13 races, the longest he has gone into a season without a top three finish.
