Pranav Gurav wins 100m
Kochi: Pranav Pramod Gurav emerged as the surprise package on the opening day of the 28th
National Federation Senior Athletics Competition
at the Maharaja's College ground on Monday.
Representing the Railways, the 23-year-old from Maharashtra not only outperformed more established sprinters but also overcame sweltering weather conditions to become the fastest athlete of the four-day meet. His time of 10.27 seconds, a personal best, placed him ahead of Animesh Kujur (10.32s) and Manikanta Hoblidhar (10.35s).

National 100m record holder Gurindervir Singh delivered an underwhelming performance, finishing last in the final with a time of 11.21 seconds. It seemed that Gurindervir couldn't run properly as he felt cramps in his thighs at the start of the race.
The opening day proved particularly demanding for the sprinters, who were forced to run the heats, semifinals and final of the 100m on Monday itself as the organisers decided to complete the event in a day. 'I never ran three races in a single day in my career. This was hectic,' said Animesh.
In the women's 100m dash, Telengana's Nithya Gandhe secured a comfortable victory, clocking 11.50 seconds. Tamil Nadu's Abhinaya Rajarajan (11.54s) and Karnataka's Sneha SS (11.62s) secured second and third positions respectively.
Barwal claims meet record
Sawan Barwal from the Indian Army established a meet record in the men's 10,000m race, clocking 28.57.13s to secure the gold medal.
His performance surpassed the previous record of 28.57.90s, which was set by Surendra Singh in 2007. The Indian contingent for the
Asian Athletics Championships
, scheduled to be held in South Korea next month, will be picked following this meet, and on Day 1, five athletes achieved the qualification benchmark of the Asian meet.
These athletes included Barwal and Abhishek Pal in men's 10,000m, Lili Das and Pooja in the women's 1500m and Yoonus Shah in men's 1500m. However, the day's spotlight was firmly on Gurav as he came up with a result beyond his own expectations. He dedicated his win to his ailing grandfather, who is currently hospitalised.

Virat Kohli after winning IPL 2025: I have given RCB my youth, prime and experience

Virat Kohli admitted that the Indian Premier League 2025 title win with Royal Challengers Bengaluru will go down as a highlight of his illustrious career. 'This win is right up there, I've stayed loyal to this team. I had moments otherwise, but I stayed with them and them with me. My heart is with Bangalore, my soul is with Bangalore,' said Kohli. Tried to win it every season, gave it everything I can. Never thought this day would come, was overcome with emotion after we won. This is a high-intensity tournament, I want to win the big tournaments and moments. Tonight, I'll sleep like a baby,' added Kohli. In Ahmedabad, as RCB lifted its first IPL title, team legend AB de Villiers was seen hugging Kohli after the win was sealed. 'What ABD has done for the franchise is tremendous, told him 'this is as much yours as it is ours'. He's been the POTM most times in the franchise despite being retired for four years. He deserves to be on the podium, lifting the cup,' said Kohli. The Indian batter applauded the RCB team and management for ending the team's 18-year-old wait for an IPL title. 'This management, this group of players has been outstanding. They've gotten the right kind of players, match winners, people who take the game on. In the auction, a lot of people questioned our tactics. But by day two, we were very happy with what we had. And we had a lot of confidence in the strength of this group. I want to give a big shout out to this team. It would not have been possible without each and every one in the squad, in the playing XI, the management backing the players, keeping us positive throughout when the going got tough,' said Kohli.

'What Anushka has gone through … ': Virat Kohli gets emotional after RCB clinch IPL 2025 title

Image credit: BCCI/IPL NEW DELHI After 18 long years of near misses and heartbreaks, Virat Kohli finally led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their first-ever Indian Premier League title, sealing a tense six-run victory over Punjab Kings in a pulsating final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday night. As the last ball was bowled and victory was confirmed, Kohli's emotions overflowed. Tears streamed down his face as he hugged his wife, Anushka Sharma , and placed a kiss on her forehead to mark his happiness. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Speaking to broadcasters, Kohli also credited Anushka for the role she played in his IPL-winning moment that came after 18 years. "Watching us just miss out. What your life partner does for you to be able to play — the sacrifices, the commitment, and just backing you through thick and thin — is something you can't explain in words," Kohli said. "Only when you play professionally do you understand the many things that go on behind the scenes and what they go through as well. What Anushka has gone through emotionally — watching me being down and out, coming to games, being so connected with Bangalore (she's a Bangalore girl as well), and being connected to RCB — this is very, very special for her, and she's going to be so, so proud. Thank you," he added. Kohli remains a firm advocate for Test cricket, once again expressing his opinion about youngsters playing the longest format after Royal Challengers Bengaluru ended their 18-year-long drought to win the IPL title. Kohli announced his retirement during the 2025 IPL season and will not be part of the side facing England for five Test matches over the next two months. His last appearance in the format came against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25. Kohli believes there is nothing more important than playing Test cricket and said that only after performing in the longest format will the world truly respect a player for his game. 'You know, this moment is right up there with the best moments I've had in my career. But it still marks five levels under Test cricket. That's how much I value Test cricket. And that's how much I love Test cricket. "So I would just urge the youngsters coming through, to treat that format with respect. Because if you perform in Test cricket, you walk around anywhere in the world, people look you in the eye and shake your hand and say, 'Well done, you played the game really well'. So if you want to earn respect in world cricket all over, take up Test cricket, and give your heart and soul to it. And when you walk out with wonders on the other side, then you gain respect to the cricket world with legends like yourself melting our hearts on the field and off the field," Kohli said on Tuesday. Kohli bid adieu to his Test career with 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an impressive average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. He wrapped up his Test career as the fourth-most successful Test captain overall with 40 wins, behind Graeme Smith (53 wins), Ricky Ponting (48 wins), and Steve Waugh (41 wins). He also holds the record for the most Test hundreds by an Indian captain, with 20 tons — far ahead of Sunil Gavaskar's 11 centuries.
