KOTA KINABALU: Nature Coffee from Sabah made the country proud as it was the sole international brand invited to be featured in the Smoke and Fire Coffee Festival held in Tongmeng Ancient Town, Huojia County, Zhengzhou. The event, embracing the 'early coffee, late alcohol' lifestyle trend among China's youth, gathered over 40 coffee brands from cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu for tastings, sales, and workshops. Nature Coffee, co-founded by Sabah China Chamber of Commerce vice-president Chiew Heng Hock and vice-chairman Dick Lee, used the opportunity to showcase Sabah's unique Catimor variety and foster international collaboration across the coffee supply chain. Visitors were treated to the rich, complex aroma of Sabah-grown beans, with notes of popcorn, genmaicha, and grapefruit, offering both a sensory and cultural exchange experience. JPJ: Sabah, Sarawak drivers can renew road tax at self-service kiosks from June 6 — if vehicle registered in 2020 or later
PUTRAJAYA, June 5 — Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM or road tax) renewals for individual private vehicles can be carried out at Road Transport Department (JPJ) kiosks in Sabah and Sarawak starting tomorrow. JPJ, in a statement today, said the renewal service will be available at 41 kiosks; 21 in Sabah and 20 in Sarawak. This service, however, applies only to private vehicles registered from 2020 onwards. 'For individual private vehicles registered before 2020, owners or their representatives must go to the JPJ counters for renewal,' it said. In addition, renewals can also be done via the MyJPJ app, mySIKAP JPJ portal, JPJ mobile counters, and JPJ strategic partners. Vehicle owners are also advised to ensure their motor insurance coverage is valid and active before renewing their road tax at JPJ kiosks, as the system will automatically verify insurance details during the transaction. 'This initiative is part of JPJ's ongoing efforts to enhance service efficiency and provide greater convenience to the public by digitalising its services. 'Through the use of self-service kiosks, users can carry out road tax renewals independently and quickly without needing to queue at the counter,' the statement said. At the same time, JPJ reiterated its commitment to expanding access to digital services, in line with the government's aspirations for a fully digital public service transformation and more efficient service delivery. — Bernama

GRS supreme council to hold meeting on potential partners, strategic goals for Sabah election
TUARAN, June 5 — Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Supreme Council will convene a meeting soon to determine the coalition's strategic direction, including decisions on potential partners for the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election. GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the meeting is expected to take place most likely after Aidiladha celebrations. 'The meeting will cover many critical issues as the state election is approaching. We will discuss not only who our partners will be but also the distribution of seats, candidate selection to ensure winnability, campaign strategies, and efforts to strengthen party machinery across all constituencies.' Hajiji said this to reporters after presenting sacrificial cattle donations at the Rumpun Bajau Samah Cultural Centre in Kampung Lok Batik today. The remarks came in response to Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin's statement on Tuesday that Sabah Umno will only consider cooperation with GRS after the state election. Commenting further, the Sabah Chief Minister said Bung Moktar's statement was merely Umno Sabah's stance. 'We in GRS have not made any decisions yet. Phoong's aide dares Warisan rep to raise steel project delay in state assembly

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : An aide to Sabah industrial development minister Phoong Jin Zhe has challenged Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong to raise his concerns on the delayed RM31 billion Esteel Enterprise steel project in the state assembly. Chan Loong Wei said the upcoming state assembly is the right platform for the Warisan rep to voice out any issues he has with the project as an elected representative. 'If he is genuinely curious or wishes to seek accountability, I challenge him to raise this matter in the upcoming state assembly sitting,' he said in a statement. Chan, who is Phoong's political secretary, said Esteel Enterprise is a company that is owned by a credible Singaporean businessman, who also owned a Top 100 Private Company in China in 2023. 'They (Esteel) have real credentials and real capital. In fact, their acquisition of Southern Steel Bhd in Penang in October 2024 was widely reported in Sin Chew Daily and other business media,' he added. He said that Phoong remains committed to driving inclusive economic growth, creating decent-paying jobs for Sabah youths and turning the state into a competitive, investor-friendly region. Earlier today, Chong slammed Phoong's explanation of the delays in the Esteel Enterprise steel project, calling it 'misleading and irresponsible'. He also asked how such a major project could be announced in November 2022 without confirmed approvals, especially given the federal moratorium on manufacturing licences for the steel industry at the time. Chong called for the state government to disclose all agreements and terms involving Esteel Enterprise, saying the public deserved full transparency on a project of such scale. He also questioned the delay in implementation, noting that the manufacturing licence was only approved in January 2025, more than two years after the project was announced. On Monday, Phoong said the delay in the RM31 billion steel project was due to setbacks in obtaining the necessary approvals and securing a supply of natural gas. He said the initial projection for Esteel Enterprise's factory to begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year was based on the assumption that approvals would be obtained without delay. However, he said Putrajaya's two-year moratorium on manufacturing licences for steel-related industries created complications, with special approval only granted on Jan 24, 2025.
