Samruddhi Mahamarg opens fully, cuts down travel time from Mumbai to Nagpur by 9 hours
The Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg is now open end to end after the 76-kilometre leg between Igatpuri and Amane (Thane) was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, providing a seamless 701-kilometre connectivity from Mumbai to Nagpur. The six-lane expressway that is now fully operational will reduce the travel time between the two cities by half from 17 hours to around eight hours.
The event organised at Igatpuri was also attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar and other ministers of the Mahayuti government.
The completion of the last leg brings the entire project to realisation after decades of intricate engineering issues, political will and huge investments. The project was initially estimated at Rs 55,500 crore, but as it crossed various technical and logistical barriers and the project cost rose to over Rs 61,000 crore.
At the inauguration, Fadnavis, who initially conceptualised the project in his first tenure as a CM, said, 'This is not merely a road, it is a corridor of Maharashtra's economy. It directly connects 24 districts with JNPT and paves the way for growth, transportation, logistics and opportunities in agriculture, tourism and industrial development.'
The final stretch of the corridor passing through Nashik and Thane districts had some of the most challenging construction tasks. The 76-kilometre section comprises five twin tunnels of 10.73 kilometres in length, including the broadest tunnel in the country near Igatpuri that is 8 km long and 17.61 metres wide. It also has India's first fire-fighting system in a tunnel. As many as 17 viaducts with an aggregate length of more than 10.56 kilometers had to be built in hilly and forested territory.
'Because of a thick forest block, absence of access roads, hilly terrain and high rainfall in Igatpuri, we had to work with utmost caution. Nevertheless, we adopted the best safety measures to facilitate a safe working environment,' said K Mallikharjuna Rao, Business Unit Head, Hydro and Underground, Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, who were a part of construction of the twin tunnels.
This section also has interchanges at Igatpuri, Khutghar and Amane. More than 60 low and high voltage power lines had to be shifted for the construction along with the new rail overbridge. The road now provides a safer route to the scary Kasara Ghat and shortens the journey time from Igatpuri to Kasara to eight minutes.
The Samruddhi Mahamarg is a greenfield expressway designed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) that passes through 392 villages in 26 talukas in 10 districts. It directly links Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahilyanagar, Nashik and Thane and indirectly serves many others such as Chandrapur, Nanded, Dhule, Palghar and Raigad. The highest speed limit is fixed at 120 kmph on flat terrain and 100 kmph in ghat sections.
Shinde said, 'We initiated the project in our term and completed it in our term only. This access control road will prove to be a game changer in economic activity between Mumbai and Vidarbha. Earlier, the farmer who used to travel for three days to come to Mumbai with farm produce now is able to reach the same day.'
Besides its huge size, the expressway has been built focusing on conservation and intelligent engineering, according to MSRDC officials. For the conservation of wildlife, 92 overpasses and eight underpasses have been constructed for the safe passage of animals. Over 3.3 million trees have been transplanted with native species and 1,000 farm ponds have been created along the road to support agriculture in the regions.
Fadnavis also highlighted advanced features such as temperature sensitive fire fighting systems, rainwater harvesting systems and well designed interchanges. 'The fire fighting system and temperature sensitive surfaces are designed such that they get activated when temperatures rise above 60 degrees Celsius and self-deactivates when the temperature goes below 30 degrees Celsius,' he said.
The expressway will also facilitate the transportation of goods between MIHAN in Nagpur and JNPT in Mumbai with faster and more reliable cargo movement. In future, there are proposals for 200 MW of solar power generation along the route, with 22 facility centres being planned to benefit travellers. A gas pipeline from Konkan to Nagpur through this corridor is also planned that will ensure constant fuel supply to industries along this route.
After Samruddhi Mahamarg, the government is now set to apply the model of access controlled expressways to other proposed corridors such as the Mumbai-Pune expressway missing link and Shaktipeeth Mahamarg, thereby increasing the network of expressways across the state. 'We are constructing an access control grid so that one is able to reach any corner of the state to other within 8 to 10 hours only,' Shinde added.
In his address, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said, 'When the project started, everyone opposed it, some even organised protests… The estimated amount was Rs 55,500 crore, but owing to factors, it has crossed Rs 61,000 crore now. But the magnitude of this achievement for the state is huge.'

State to use I-T data to weed out ineligible ‘Ladki Bahin' beneficiaries
1 2 3 Pune: State govt is set to conduct a comprehensive verification of beneficiaries under the Mukhyamantri Mazhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, leveraging income tax return data from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to ensure that the monthly Rs 1,500 aid reaches only economically weaker women. A notification issued by the CBDT on June 3 authorises the secretary of the state women and child development (WCD) department to access income tax (I-T) data under Section 138 of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The department has already formed a team to review the existing list of 2.5 crore applicants. Officials said the verification would help identify and remove ineligible claimants, particularly those from families with higher incomes or tax-paying members. Earlier, a scrutiny of around 2 lakh applications had revealed that 2,289 government employees had registered under the scheme. These names were promptly removed. State WCD minister Aditi Tatkare had described such verification as a routine and necessary process in the implementation of welfare schemes. The Ladki Bahin Yojana is targeted at women from low-income families, including married, widowed, divorced, abandoned and single, between the ages of 21 and 65. Eligible applicants must reside in Maharashtra, have an Aadhaar-linked bank account and belong to families with annual income below Rs 2.5 lakh. Women will be deemed ineligible if their family members are income taxpayers or are employed as regular or permanent staff in govt departments or public undertakings. Those receiving pensions, owning four-wheelers (excluding tractors) or already benefiting from other govt schemes of Rs 1,500 or more per month will also be excluded. Families of current or former MPs, MLAs or individuals holding top positions in govt boards or corporations are similarly disqualified. The officials said the integration of verified I-T data would make the screening process more accurate, reduce fraudulent claims and ensure that benefits reach the right individuals. At present, the department has 2.52 crore beneficiaries. "We have pushed the funds to accounts but it is likely that 2.47 crore would have received it," a source from the department said. Around Rs 3,719 crore was allocated for May under this scheme. CM Fadnavis says there is no diversion of funds from departments CM Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday told TOI that no funds from any govt department were diverted towards Ladki Bahin scheme. A section of ruling party politicians, as well as the opposition, had criticized state govt for alleged diversion of funds from key departments to sustain the Ladki Bahin scheme. On June 5, a social justice department GR stating diversion of Rs 410 crore had triggered further discussions. When asked, Fadnavis in a text message reply to TOI said, "All the schemes in which individual benefit goes to SC and ST are to be shown under tribal and social welfare department respectively. It is the budget principle and deputy CM Ajit Pawar, who is also the finance minister, while preparing the budget has showed the same. Hence, the budget given to both departments increased significantly. It's not that their regular funds are being diverted or utilised for this scheme. Aaditya Thackeray could experience jail this monsoon, says Nitesh Rane
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: During his visit to Tuljapur in Dharashiv, BJP minister Nitesh Rane said Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray might face imprisonment in the coming monsoon period. Rane suggested that discussions about Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS merger are being circulated to deflect attention from ED's investigation of actor Dino Morea, whom he identified as Aaditya Thackeray's friend. "All details have arrived in the (Dino Morea) case, and (Sena-UBT chief) Uddhav Thackeray's son could soon experience a jail trip this monsoon," he said. The fisheries and ports minister emphasised on the connection between Aaditya Thackeray and Morea. The ED conducted searches at various sites, including Morea's Mumbai residence, investigating the Rs 65 crore Mithi river desilting scam. The agency has summoned Morea for questioning next week. Regarding the potential merger between Sena (UBT) and MNS, Rane described it as a private matter between the Thackeray cousins. "They fought each other without consulting us, and will not tell us now if they plan to unite," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Rane also said both Sena (UBT) and MNS have no combined political strength, considering their minimal legislative representation. "They hate the Hindu religion, criticise mega events like Maha Kumbh," he added. Leader of opposition in the state legislative council Ambadas Danve, however, dismissed Rane's statements, describing him as politically inexperienced and suggesting that even BJP members don't take his comments seriously. "Rane is known for talking nonsense, and there is no need to react to his remarks on Aditya Thackeray," he told TOI. At a subsequent party gathering in Dharashiv, Rane emphasised BJP's supremacy and its rightful claim to the chief minister's position. "No matter how much power someone shows, no matter how anyone throws tantrums, remember that the country has BJP's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the state has Devendra Fadnavis as chief minister," he said. These remarks came amidst tensions between local BJP and Shiv Sena units regarding District Development and Planning Council work sanctions in Dharashiv.

Opposition to Cauvery Aarti & amusement park at KRS grows
Mandya: Public opposition is growing over govt-proposed development projects at the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) Dam, with concerns raised about potential threats to its structural integrity and the surrounding environment. Farmer leaders, local residents and environmental advocates are voicing strong resistance, accusing the authorities of ignoring public sentiment and risking the safety of a critical water infrastructure. Activists said they are not going to permit Cauvery Aarti and an amusement park at KRS Dam. During a meeting held at Kaveri Hall, district minister N Cheluvarayaswamy faced criticism from farmer leaders, including Sunanda Jayaram. The meeting, intended to discuss the proposed Cauvery Aarti and an amusement park near the dam, quickly turned contentious. Jayaram issued a stern warning to the state govt, saying, "This is a struggle for the next generation. We will not allow this project under any circumstances. " Locals echoed this sentiment, questioning the transparency of the decision-making and demanding to know who was consulted before planning the project. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scam Exposed: What They Won't Tell You about zero trust! "He will not be allowed to come," some attendees said, demanding accountability and the presence of all representatives concerned, including the local Member of Parliament. Environmental concerns were also at the forefront. Residents warned of potential water and air pollution near the dam and challenged the legitimacy of any environmental impact assessments conducted. The proposal to hold a camphor aarti and invest Rs 100 crore in cultural and beautification drew sharp scrutiny. "Who asked for a cultural programme near the dam?" asked one attendee, criticising the project as unnecessary and wasteful. Allegations of political inconsistency were directed at MLAs from Pandavapura and Srirangapatna, with claims they shift their stance based on the audience. After the meeting, Cheluvarayaswamy said strong opposition was voiced against both the Cauvery Aarti and amusement park components. He said no construction or development work has begun and reassured the public that further consultations would be held before any final decision is made. "The farmers have said 'no' for now, but may agree later," the minister remarked, indicating that the matter remains open for discussion. He emphasised the govt's intent to resolve the issue peacefully and collaboratively, stating: "There is no intention to force anything here."
