The library at Eas Mor has been named among the best in the world

'150 Libraries You Need to Visit Before You Die' by Léa Teuscher, a London-based, sub editor with Wallpaper magazine, contacted the Eas Mor team unexpectedly; they were thrilled to receive the recognition. The library at Eas Mor was created in 2000 by Michael 'Albert' Holmes as a shelter from the storm.
'I just built it with a chainsaw and a set of ladders and thought I'd leave some pens and papers in there for a rainy day,' Holmes explains, 'and now that place will touch the soul. It's a living entity.'
Holmes, who formerly worked in the building trade across the water in Ayrshire, bought the woodland from the forestry commission in 1998 for 'a song' with the dream of rewilding it. Years, tears and volunteers combined to slowly return it to a diverse and thriving ecosystem, with paths dug by hand and only a motorised wheel barrow to assist.
(Image: Kim McAllister) Now visitors can enjoy woodfired pizzas in the solar-powered café at the base of the trail, filled with hand carved windowsills and hand painted murals, before followings paths through larch, sycamore, hazel and Scots pine on the route to the library.
The views over the forest, out to the Firth of Clyde, Ailsa Craig and the mainland become more spectacular as the journey takes the visitor up the hillside to the top of a waterfall.
Holmes believes the wide vista shows the curvature of the Earth at the horizon, and explains that around three o'clock in the afternoon the sun hits the waterfall sending rainbows across the valley.Little wonder then, that by the time they reach the library, visitors are feeling poetic.
'Sometimes I sit in here and just cry, this place means so much to people,' Holmes admits, as he gazes around the space.
He has added a small set of step ladders to allow people to pin their notes to the roof, and four small school chairs have been placed by the table. Bookshelves line one wall, visitors can add and borrow books on a trust system. Holmes says there was once a first edition of a Harry Potter book left as a token of thanks from someone who was particularly moved.
(Image: Kim McAllister) 'There's a donation box here – you wouldn't believe how much we spend on papers and pens and pencils,' he smiles. 'But it doesn't matter. The library is here to teach people about ecology and sustainable living.'
He adds that the previous night he had had a group of children in the library helping to tidy up as part of an award with the John Muir Trust. He is particularly keen that children with additional support needs be involved, and is investigating different types of transport to help people with mobility issues to reach the library.
His big dream was to install a hydro power plant, but it took 15 years to find the right partners and investment. Now the turbines are in place and the peaty water from the top of the hill gives the charity a solid income stream.
'I have to brush the filters twice a day because peat is like a heart attack for the system,' Holmes shrugs, slotting the hard bristled broom back into its hiding place at the top of the waterfall.
There have been many setbacks along the way, most recently Storm Eowyn in January this year which brought down hundreds of trees and required a crowdfunder campaign to help Holmes and his team take care of the damage. 'Seven solid weeks with a chainsaw – it nearly killed me,' he jokes. 'Not one tree hit the library, right enough.'
(Image: Kim McAllister) Everything in the forest is reused, visitors can see details throughout the hike, like hand-carved signs and seats. Rocks hewn from the quarry are crushed for the pathways and the wood is turned into furniture and structures, like the 'bar' created by a circle of logs round a firepit, used for celebrations around events like the summer solstice.
An amphitheatre is taking shape and Holmes has big plans for the field where the island road meets Eas Mor. 'We have planning permission for a 12 bedroom lodge, covered in turf and we want to have yoga and a pottery studio,' he says.
'You never own the land, you only manage it. This place found me. I love my trees – my primary objective is the protection of this habitat.'

Rangers mad Aussie darts star reveals Ibrox obsession and the anthem he walks out to

Australian darts star Brandon Weening walked out to Penny Arcade and hopes to make a trip to see Light Blues play Rangers-mad Brandon Weening was left feeling blue after being frozen-out by Mike De Decker. ‌ But the Australian darts star is hoping a trip across the globe to see an Old Firm game against Celtic could help make up for his loss. ‌ Weening has become a massive supporter of Rangers through a Scots pal and walked into the arena to the tune of Penny Arcade, a well-known song heard at Ibrox. ‌ The Python was choked by the Belgian ace as he lost the first-round game 6-2, but the Geelong star still enjoyed his experience facing one of the PDC elite in his own backyard before he explained the roots of his Rangers affection after the match. Weening revealed: 'I'm a big gamer. I met a guy from Scotland and we became really good friends. He got me to watch a Rangers game with him once and I just got the Rangers bug. It was back during lockdown. That's how I became a Rangers guy and I'm loving it. I fix my sleep schedule and I'm normally waking up at about 3am to watch them now. It depends on what time they start. 'I would love to watch an Old Firm there regardless of the result. 100 per cent. Obviously, I would want to see Rangers win, but regardless of the result, I would love to go to Ibrox and watch an Old Firm or any match.' Weening confirmed his walk-on was inspired by the tune ringing out at Ibrox as he added: '100 per cent. I know Roy Orbison did a version of it. I don't like that version. Then I heard the Sammy King version of it and loved it.' In the end, De Decker managed to get the job done despite suffering from cold hands on the stage in Wollongong. He said: 'It's been fun coming to Australia. It was less fun being on stage because it's a bit colder. I was blowing my hands the whole game. When my hands are cold, I don't have any grip on the darts. so normally my darts stick up to upright and now they were going a bit flat. It just doesn't feel well. 'That's why I was blowing the whole game as well, trying to get them warm, but it wasn't really working. I'll probably wash my hands with really hot water before I have to next go on stage. Maybe that helps. It's not really cold outside. In Australia they call it winter, but it's still 20 degrees. So it's not that it's winter.' De Decker is delighted to be part of the World Series having turned down an earlier invitation to play in Holland and also being outspoken over his Premier League omission. He admitted some pressure as he said: 'Yeah, a little bit. As well with all the interviews I did after the line-up of the Premier League and declining the one in Holland. I didn't expect getting a call-up for this and for New Zealand, so it was a nice surprise. 'It's nice to get the recognition of what you did as well. If I didn't win the Grand Prix last year, I wouldn't be in these events.'

Noel Gallagher slammed Scotland as 'third world country' in bitter feud ahead of Murrayfield gigs

Oasis perform three nights at Murrayfield on August 8, 9 and 12 and will get a warm welcome from Scottish crowds of over 67,000 per night, despite Noel's previous comments. The wait is finally over as Oasis are set to take to the Murrayfield stage tonight for the first of a three-night run of gigs in Edinburgh. It's a much anticipated event, to say the least, and is the next stop in the huge tour which has already delighted fans in Cardiff, their Heaton Park home turf, and London's Wembley Arena. ‌ This weekend's shows at Edinburgh's Murrayfield stadium marks the first time in 16 years that Liam, Noel and their iconic Britpop group have performed in Scotland. And it comes after a long relationship between Scots and the Manchester music legends, who were discovered here by Scot Alan McGee in Glasgow back in 1993. ‌ Oasis perform three nights at Murrayfield on August 8, 9 and 12 to crowds of over 67,000 per night and it's pretty safe to predict a warm welcome for the Gallagher brothers. ‌ But buzzing Scots Oasis fans may not be so thrilled to discover that Noel previously brutally bashed Scotland in an interview. Despite his now ex-wife Sara McDonald being from Edinburgh, at the time of the interview, Noel went as far as to brand Scotland as a 'third world country'. What's more, the singer also picked a fight with the country's beloved music icon, Lewis Capaldi, considered a national treasure for his down to earth nature, hilarious sense of humour and incredible musical talents. Their dispute first started when Noel said during an interview in 2019 that he didn't know who the Scots singer was, despite Lewis topping the album charts at the time with his debut, Divinely Unexpired to a Hellish Extent, and bagging the fastest selling record that year. Noel said: "Music is f***ing w*** at the moment". He then insulted the Glasgow-born star as he said: "Who's this Capaldi fella? Who the f***'s that idiot?" Capaldi took it well, and left fans rolling about laughing as he took to Instagram to celebrate Noel's comments in a sarcastic manner. ‌ While watching the interview, he responded: "F***ing c'mon! F***ing peaked – slagged off by Noel Gallagher! "Number 1 single – who gives a f***? Number 1 album – who gives a f***? Noel Gallagher has just slagged me off. This is dreams coming true." The Someone You Loved hitmaker didn't stop there as he wished Gallagher a happy Father's Day while he filmed himself enjoying Oasis' 2002 hit 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out'. ‌ Noel was fast to hit back with a tweet making fun of Lewis, alongside a clip of his then 11-year-old song pretending to cry at Lewis' first single. He captioned it: "@LewisCapaldi you big daftie. You might wanna try and find some joy in your tunes, you're destroying the 11yr old is in bits." In response, Lewis took to the stage at Glastonbury Festival that same month, wearing a typical Gallagher style parka jacket which he unzipped to reveal a top with the Oasis guitarist's face inside a love heart. ‌ He then took things a step further by getting a backstage snap beside Noel's then-estranged brother and former bandmate, Liam. Noel was left furious and referenced Lewis' stunt in an interview with Variety. He then brutally poked fun at the singer's appearance. ‌ The High Flying Birds frontman said: "F****** Chewbacca should enjoy his 15 minutes. The greatest day of his life that I slagged him off or called him an idiot. "It's the greatest day of his f****** life so far. He's just thinking 'wow'. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! It is like a third world country but for f***'s sake, man, you must have had a better day than this. Surely." Lewis again left fans in fits of laughter once more as he changed his Twitter name to "Chewis Capaldi" and made his profile picture an image of his face edited onto the Star Wars character's head. He was then shown some support from an unlikely ally - or maybe likely, given their history - in the shape of Liam, who called his brother out on the remark. ‌ He tweeted at the time: "Moron = The person who wishes aids on other people. Moron = The person who says Scotland is a third world country. Moron = The little one in Oasis with the big head and naff dress sense. As you were LG." Noel later said that every tweet Liam puts out about him was a "nail in the coffin" of Oasis reunion hopes. But thankfully, things were resolved between everyone in the end. Noel and Lewis have put their feud to bed and have even met a few times since., with Gallagher since branding the Scot a "good lad". Noel and Liam have also put their differences to the side, and will take to the Murrayfield stage tonight for what is sure to be an epic show.
