‘America's stinkiest city': Smoke-filled NYC streets leave Indian vlogger stunned

An Indian vlogger has sparked buzz on social media after posting a video from New York City, and calling it 'America's stinkiest city,' capturing thick, foul-smelling smoke rising from manholes at a busy intersection.
In the clip, Nitish Advitiy films a typical NYC crosswalk where dense white smoke suddenly pours out from manholes in the middle of the street. While locals seem unfazed, pedestrians and vehicles carry on as usual, the scene struck many international viewers as unusual and unsettling.
In a video posted on Instagram, Nitish captioned it "America's Stinkiest City"
The video has sparked a wide range of reactions on social media.
While some viewers found the situation amusing, others took a more critical stance, calling out what they see as double standards.
Many pointed out that Western countries, particularly in the media, are quick to highlight hygiene and infrastructure problems in developing nations, yet often remain silent about similar issues in their own cities. The footage of smoke and foul odours coming from New York's manholes, they argued, is a clear example of the kind of problems that are overlooked when they happen in the West.

One user commented, "This is what Western media never shows."
While another said, "OMG I can't believe this is NYC."
One went on to say, "Please tag this video to the President to show him the mirror."
Another one added' "This looks so yucky," expressing the disgust.
Before this Advitiy shared another video highlighting an experience in the US. In an Instagram reel, he expressed surprise at how his neighbours reacted after a nearby house caught fire. He observed that no one stepped out to check on the homeowner or offer help. While the fire department arrived quickly and handled the situation, he found the neighbours' lack of concern particularly noticeable.

Help desk for visually impaired students at DU's Kirori Mal College

In a significant step towards fostering campus inclusivity, the Centre for Disability Research and Training (CDRT) at Delhi University's Kirori Mal College (KMC), on Wednesday launched the 'Project Samaavesh', in collaboration with the Score Foundation. The help desk will be set up at the campus and is expected to be operational from next week. As part of the initiative, Samaavesh Eyeway Helpdesk, will be set up at the campus and is expected to be operational from next week. Someshwar Sati , KMC's English professor and coordinator, CDRT said the initiative aims to promote inclusion for blind and visually impaired students and will cater to every National Capital Region (NCR) student, regardless their enrolment with DU. The primary objective of the desk will be to provide counselling, Sati said, adding that every student will be profiled to better understand their needs and aspirations, following which they will be given customized solutions. In addition to academic support, the help desk will offer skill enhancement training in such assistive technologies and personality development to improve employability, added Sati. The working days and timings for desk will be announced soon. Launched in September 2021, the CDRT aims to promote and popularize disability studies as a legitimate field of intellectual enquiry within the Indian academia. KMC principal Dinesh Khattar said, 'We need to work towards inclusion which is not just spoken about in policies but also a lived reality in classrooms and campuses. This initiative is a bold step towards that.' Rajesh Aggarwal, secretary of Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment was invited as the chief guest at the launch event and expressed happiness over colleges taking step towards creating a more inclusive campus. Sati said the CDRT will work towards establishing similar projects for helping students with other disabilities. Narendra Kumar Kashyap, a third-year undergraduate in Sanskrit said, 'This is definitely a great initiative. Sometimes, in classes students with special needs cannot interact as much as the other students, which of course causes inconvenience. This will be able to give focused help to students.' Another student, Sachin Kumar, is currently pursuing postgraduate studies in Political Science from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Kumar was involved with CDRT from its initial days when he was a UG student at KMC. 'There are still colleges in DU which are not as inclusive as they should be. So to start talking on the topic, these initiatives are required. Additionally, initiatives like these create a safe space for all students, help unlearn prejudices and open a world where everyone can look forward to a brighter future,' Kumar said.

Pawsitive change: Call for safe spaces, compassion for strays

Guwahati: Recent debates across Indian cities, including Guwahati, have put street dogs under the spotlight. Are they loyal guardians of the lanes and by-lanes, or a growing urban menace? On Guwahati's streets, they remain a familiar yet divisive presence. While speaking to city dwellers, TOI explored contrasting perspectives. As residents of Guwahati navigate the growing presence of street dogs, their experiences reflect both fear and compassion. "I sometimes find them frightening. They often chase people on the road, but that doesn't mean all are dangerous. I love feeding them whenever I can," said Lotasha, a commuter waiting at the Khanapara bus stand. Many described street dogs as animals without owners or shelters, surviving on leftovers. Residents describe them differently, some see them as aggressive strays, others as protective companions, who flourish with care. Surojit Sinha from Borbari argued, not all street dogs are aggressive. "Some are peaceful and behave nicely when cared for. Many end up on the streets after owners abandon them." Several residents believe abandonment is worsening the problem and cited it as a key reason for the growing population of stray dogs. Many residents' point to sterilization and shelter as urgent needs. "They protect us, bring joy," said Satarupa Debnath from Lal-Ganesh, who owns a golden retriever. While talking to the people in the streets, many drew a comparison to pets. People mentioned that, pet dogs are usually bred under controlled conditions; they're vaccinated, groomed and trained from a young age. Street dogs, on the other hand, are born and raised on the roads, exposed to harsh conditions and diseases. That makes them somewhat unpredictable in behavior compared to pets, which are raised in a safe environment. Students and professionals also flagged the lack of sterilization as a major concern. Mridumani Deka, owner of a pet clinic at Hengrabari said, "Street dogs usually don't attack unless provoked. Often, honking vehicles or people chasing them triggers their reaction. Puppies sometimes may bite playfully while being fed, because they don't know better, not because they are being mean. They survive on waste because few people feed them, and like any living beings, they defend themselves." While talking to the people in the streets, many drew a comparison to pets. Shine Sherif from Sixth Mile said, "I think street dogs are very love hungry, at least from what I have noticed. They like it when you pet them, they approach you sometimes, and they know how to act cutesy to get food. Sometimes they might follow you, but I think the key is to not have eye contact with them. As long as you don't make them feel threatened, you are good to go. " Across the city, views remain divided. While some call street dogs protectors of their lanes, others see them as a safety threat. One theme resonates: street dogs are not just an urban challenge but a shared responsibility. What emerges is a picture of coexistence mixed with conflict, where compassion clashes with concern.
