Year Of The Spider: Enter The Botanix EVM-Compatible Bitcoin Layer 2
For nearly a decade, Alisia Painter has seen firsthand how the world's largest cryptocurrency remained largely static – bought, sold, and held, but rarely put to work.
But after years of watching bitcoin's potential remain largely untapped, Painter and her team began building Botanix two and a half years ago with a simple question: if bitcoin has established itself as the premier cryptocurrency, why isn't anything being built on it?
The answer lies in the fact that bitcoin's original design prioritized security and decentralization over programmability. While smart contracts flourished on networks like Ethereum and Solana that promoted these capabilities, bitcoin retained primarily a store of value function despite having the largest market capitalization and adoption of any cryptocurrency.
During an interview with me for Roxom TV at Bitcoin Las Vegas, Painter explained that the vast majority of bitcoiners only engage in three basic activities: buy, sell and hodl.
Digital Gold to Programmable Money
Botanix Labs, the company Painter co-founded alongside Willem Schroé, is looking to change that mindset. On July 1 it launched the Botanix mainnet with the aim to transforming bitcoin from digital gold into programmable money that can power a full financial ecosystem.
She emphasized that up until now, the growth of decentralized and on-chain finance over the last five years has largely bypassed the bitcoin world:
The Botanix blockchain looks to empower bitcoiners by bringing smart contract functionality directly to the $2 trillion bitcoin network without compromising on core principles. The Botanix Labs team claims that the network is the first fully-decentralized bitcoin Layer 2 that is also Ethereum Virtual Machine compatible, meaning that it can support smart contracts originally created to be run on Ethereum.
Enter the Spiderchain
Security is always a key consideration when introducing any new product to bitcoin's battle-heartened community. For Botanix, the unlocking innovation is the "Spiderchain," a novel cryptographic primitive that enables bitcoin scaling while maintaining full decentralization.
While communicating this innovative security model to the community has been a challenge, Painter said that even the most diehard hodl-ers are growing more comfortable with the concept:
While other similar bitcoin onchain finance solutions rely on bridges to other blockchains that pose security risks, Botanix operates entirely within the bitcoin ecosystem – minimizing the risk of funds lost due to bridge hacks and reliance on centralized custodians.
To ensure full decentralization of the network from the outset, governance of Botanix has been formally shifted away from Botanix Labs to an independent federation of 16 independent node operators, including Fireblocks, Galaxy, Alchemy, Kiln, XBTO, Antpool and others. There are plans to expand this federation to 100 operators by 2026.
In a statement, Botanix Labs co-founder Schroé elaborated:
The Botanix mainnet launch brings with it more than 40 new applications going live simultaneously, affording users the ability to trade, borrow, lend, stake, and provide liquidity to earn bitcoin native yield.
These applications include major protocols like the perpetuals decentralized exchange GMX and the Dolomite lending protocol, as well as bitcoin-native applications like Bitzy and Palladium, the world's first bitcoin-backed stablecoin.
Why the emphasis on yield generation? Because hardcore bitcoiners don't want to sell their coins, Painter explains. Rather, they want to use them as collateral to borrow against.
The team emphasizes that users of these applications will see a significantly improved user experience compared to bitcoin mainnet – namely five second block times on Botanix compared to 10 minutes on bitcoin – with average transaction fees of just $0.02.
While some factions argue that bringing programmability and related features to bitcoin is a diversion from its original vision and a potential security threat, Painter argues that bringing increased utility is essential for driving new adoption:
Bitcoin Programmability Key to Emerging Markets
For Painter, the launch represents more than just technological achievement. Rather, it's about fulfilling bitcoin's original promise as peer-to-peer electronic cash while addressing the financial inclusion challenges that first drew her to the space.
Her journey into Bitcoin began in 2015 while living in Brazil, where she encountered the same financial pain points that she had witnessed across other parts of the world: limited banking access, volatile national currencies, and barriers to moving money globally.
She saw how bitcoin could provide a pristine asset to populations who otherwise have no such access to something of such quality.
Furthermore, she emphasized that programmability and usability of bitcoin is critical to unlocking its full potential in underserved parts of the world:

Crypto is booming. Washington is driving the rally
It's been a summer to remember for crypto. Bitcoin is eclipsing record highs, shares in crypto-related companies are soaring and Wall Street is rethinking its stance on the industry. Once on the fringes of finance, cryptocurrency is now being embraced by a growing base of enthusiastic investors — and that's driven in large part by the White House's support. It's integrating with traditional finance more than ever before, bolstered by sweeping legislative changes in Washington. For example, President Donald Trump recently issued an executive order that opened the door for digital assets like crypto to be included in 401(k)s. This boosted bitcoin — the world's largest cryptocurrency by market value — to a record high of $124,000 last week. Anything related to bitcoin has been on fire this year as investors continue to pour money into crypto-related companies. Meanwhile, skeptics who warn of crypto's flaws are raising concerns about heightened risks for consumers. Shares in Robinhood (HOOD), a trading platform that includes cryptocurrencies, have soared 200% this year. Coinbase (COIN), a crypto exchange, has gained 28%. Strategy (MSTR), a company that purchases bitcoin, is up 26% this year. And BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR), a company that mines bitcoin, has surged 625%. In comparison, the benchmark S&P 500 is up 10% this year. The Nasdaq 100, an index tracking the 100 largest tech companies in the United States, is up 13%. Crypto is climbing into unprecedented territory. Google is part of a multibillion-dollar deal with a bitcoin mining company called TeraWulf, helping drive enthusiasm about the industry. 'Institutional adoption and strategic infrastructure deals have propelled crypto markets well beyond summer expectations,' said Brian Dobson, head of disruptive technology equity research at brokerage firm Clear Street. 'We see this as the early stages of a broader cycle.' The current crypto mania has the makings of a classic speculative rally, supported by intense bullishness on tech, AI and crypto, according to Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, a trading platform. 'The (Trump) administration proclaimed that it would be crypto-friendly,' Sosnick said. 'Markets have been very much willing to embrace speculation of any kind.' Circle (CRCL), a stablecoin issuer (a type of crypto coin), has surged 80% since it debuted on the New York Stock Exchange on June 5. The latest crypto-related company to debut on the New York Stock Exchange is called Bullish (BLSH). Retail investors have been big buyers. However, 9% of global fund managers surveyed by Bank of America in August had exposure to cryptocurrency. 'One factor is just pure excitement around the potential diversification of 401(k)s into alternative assets,' said Michael Green, chief strategist at Simplify Asset Management. 'The growing acceptance and awareness of crypto in that space has really powered flows into bitcoin in particular this year.' BlackRock has also propelled bitcoin's ascent. The asset management firm launched its own bitcoin exchange-traded fund in January 2024 after the Securities and Exchange Commission greenlit bitcoin-focused ETFs. The ETF is up 137% since its launch, and it's become the primary vehicle for investors to get exposure to bitcoin without purchasing the cryptocurrency, Green said. The S&P 500, in comparison, has gained 37% across the same period. Another crypto win came on July 18, when Trump signed the GENIUS Act into law, laying out regulations for stablecoins. Stablecoins are a type of crypto pegged to another asset, like the US dollar, to keep its value steady. The 'stable' value gives it potential use in digital payments. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon on his company's earnings call in July said the bank is going to be involved in stablecoins to 'understand it' and 'be good at it.' 'The way to be cognizant is to be involved,' Dimon said. 'We're going to be in it and learning a lot.' JPMorgan on July 30 also announced a partnership with Coinbase 'to make buying crypto easier than ever.' Beginning this fall, Chase customers will be able to fund their Coinbase accounts to purchase crypto with their Chase credit cards. With all the crypto changes this year, it's important for investors to 'seek as much education as possible' on new technologies and assets like bitcoin to better grasp 'all of the opportunities and risks involved,' said Chris Kuiper, vice president of research at Fidelity Digital Assets. The Trump family has been active in the crypto industry. World Liberty Financial, a company tied to the Trump family, has issued its own stablecoin. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday said in a social media post that the government aims 'to execute on the President's promise to make the United States the 'Bitcoin superpower of the world.'' While markets cheer developments in the space, others are warning of crypto's flaws and raising concerns about potential financial risks. The GENIUS Act, for example, has been heralded by proponents of the crypto industry. Yet some policy advocacy groups are drawing attention to what they call the lack of consumer protections. 'The GENIUS Act does not really offer much in the way of consumer or investor or financial stability protections beyond what already exists,' said Amanda Fischer, policy director at Better Markets, a nonprofit advocacy group. 'I do not think that this bill should be viewed as regulating stablecoins, so much as it is the government endorsing stablecoins and importing crypto risks into the regular financial system,' Fischer said.

Shares in Novo Nordisk rise after Wegovy gets US nod for liver disease treatment
By Jacob Gronholt-Pedersen COPENHAGEN, DENMARK (Reuters) -Shares in Novo Nordisk rose on Monday, after it got U.S. approval for its weight-loss drug Wegovy to treat a serious liver condition, positive news for the drugmaker that lost more than one-third of its market value in recent weeks. Novo's shares rose as much as 5% at opening and were trading 3.5% higher by 0711 GMT. Three weeks ago, investors wiped $70 billion off its market value, after Novo - which became Europe's most valuable listed company following the launch of Wegovy in 2021 - issued a profit warning and named a company veteran as new CEO. On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted accelerated approval for Wegovy to treat metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH, making it the first GLP-1 class therapy cleared for the progressive liver condition that affects around 5% of adults in the United States. Rival Eli Lilly has published encouraging MASH data in a mid-stage trial with tirzepatide - the active ingredient in its popular diabetes drug Mounjaro and weight-loss treatment Zepbound. "It is expected that this market exclusivity will only last for a transitional phase before Eli Lilly also launches a product on the market," said Nordnet analyst Per Hansen. Novo has also applied this year for approval in Europe and Japan. Its shares have lost more than two-thirds of their value since June last year, amid concerns that the Danish drugmaker is losing ground in the obesity drug race it started to rival Eli Lilly and "compounded" copycat drugs.
