Nagpur: Newly-inducted Maharashtra food and civil supplies minister
Chhagan Bhujbal
on Friday said that CM
Devendra Fadnavis
made serious efforts to include him in the Mahayuti govt during its first cabinet expansion last December.
"Fadnavis was very keen on my induction in the first expansion. Not just him, PM Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah also tried for the same. But the party decided otherwise then," Bhujbal told reporters during his first visit to Nagpur since taking oath on May 21.
The 77-year-old NCP veteran, who represents Yeola in Nashik district, was sworn in during the second expansion of Fadnavis ministry. His return to the cabinet triggered political speculation about internal rifts amid reports of opposition within his own party.
Clarifying his stand, Bhujbal said, "Those targeting me should understand I am not a BJP minister. I belong to Ajit Pawar's NCP. It is our party that decides who becomes a minister. The CM only issues administrative directions."
Responding to corruption allegations that resurfaced after his induction, Bhujbal pointed out that the court has already exonerated him. "The verdict came during Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) govt's tenure.
An 80-page order cleared me and others. The case is shut," he said referring to Delhi's Maharashtra Sadan case.
He added, "The five-star Maharashtra Sadan building is complete, but the govt hasn't paid a single rupee. We also upgraded Mumbai's RTO and built official quarters, yet no payments were made. That's why the court acquitted us."
Bhujbal remained firm on his stand against inclusion of Marathas under OBC category when asked about Maratha activist Manoj Jarange's call for a fresh agitation in August.
"We are also ready," he said.
Addressing concerns over possible discontent among NCP ranks, especially Beed MLA Dhananjay Munde, Bhujbal said, "If someone has to resign after becoming a minister, disappointment is natural. It's human nature."
Declining to comment on the guardian minister post for Nashik, Bhujbal said he would not be drawn into the discussion.

Jalandhar man accused of NCP leader's murder held in Canada, says Maharashtra minister

Zeeshan Akhtar, an alleged key conspirator in the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique, has been 'arrested' in Canada, Maharashtra minister of state for home, Yogesh Kadam said on Wednesday. Akhtar (22) was held in a fake passport case. 'Zeeshan, who was involved in the Baba Siddiqui murder case, has been arrested in Canada. We have initiated the process to bring him back to India. We will interrogate him further (after bringing him back),' Kadam told the media. Punjab Police had named Akhtar, 22, as a key conspirator behind the grenade attack on senior BJP leader and former state minister Manoranjan Kalia's house in the wee hours on April 7. No one was injured in the attack. Punjab Police special director general of police Arpit Shukla had named Akhtar as the key accused. He was also booked for a grenade attack on YouTuber Rozer Sandhu's house on March 16. However, the grenade didn't explode. As per Mumbai police, jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's brother Anmol Bishnoi had given a contract to Zeeshan Akhtar and Shubham Lonkar to carry out the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader's murder. Siddique, a former Maharashtra minister, was shot dead in Bandra area on October 12, 2024. Police have arrested at least 25 persons in the case so far. The crime branch of the Mumbai police began an investigation into a video of Zeeshan Akhtar, a prime accused in the murder of Nationalist Congress Party leader Baba Siddique in February, in which he claimed to have secured asylum in a foreign country with the help of Pakistani gangster Shehzad Bhatti. Akhtar, an alleged key conspirator in the Siddique murder, claimed in the video that Bhatti had helped him escape from India after the Mumbai Police launched a manhunt for him. He said that Bhatti, whom he called his 'elder brother' in the video, had helped him secure asylum in an unknown country, outside Asia. Police confirmed that the person seen in the video, which was circulated widely online, is indeed Zeeshan Akhtar but were investigating other details. Siddique was shot dead on a busy street in Bandra East on October 12 last year. There were three shooters present but it was Shiv Kumar Gautam, henchman of gangster Anmol Bishnoi, brother of incarcerated gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who had fired the shots that killed Siddique. Police confirmed that the person seen in the video is Akhtar but added that they would have to verify its authenticity and the time at which it was recorded. 'It seems that someone purposely circulated the video on social media. We have been trying to find out where it originated,' said a senior police officer. Akhtar and Gurmail Singh, one of the three shooters recruited to kill Siddique, were one-time jail-mates in Jalandhar, in Punjab. Akhtar was moved to another jail in Jalandhar but not before he had discussed the Siddique murder with Gurmail Singh and told him he would soon have a task for him. 'We believe Zeeshan is still in India and that someone released that video of him. We are investigating the authenticity of this video, said the police official. The video of Akhtar has been posted on Shehzad Bhatti's social media accounts, which also feature a 19-second video of him talking with Lawrence Bishnoi. This video, released is June 2024, also went circulated widely on social media. Apart from Akhtar, a native of Jalandhar, police have identified Subham Lonkar, who ran a dairy in Pune, as the other key conspirator, who executed the plan allegedly hatched by Anmol Bishnoi. Both Akhtar and Lonkar are considered close confidants of Anmol Bishnoi and were allegedly tasked with Siddique's murder in May last year. Soon after planning and arranging for the shooters and their accommodation in Mumbai, both of them disappeared from their respective last-known addresses around a month before the high-profile murder took place. A senior police officer said Akhtar and Lonkar were both last traced to Nainital in Uttarakhand in September 2024. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Crime Branch filed a 4,590-page chargesheet in the Siddique murder case on Monday. The chargesheet names 26 individuals arrested in connection with the murder and identified three wanted suspects, including Anmol Bishnoi, Zeeshan Akhtar, alias Mohammed Yasin Akhtar, and Shubham Lonkar. Police described the three of them as key conspirators in the high-profile killing. Investigators also alleged that Anmol Bishnoi, the leader of an organised crime syndicate, orchestrated the murder 'to establish supremacy in Mumbai.'

Who is Zeeshan Akhtar? Key suspect in Baba Siddique murder held in Canada; linked to Bishnoi gang

. Zeeshan Akhtar has been detained in Canada in connection with the murder of NCP politician Baba Siddique. Akhtar was reportedly held on the basis of an Interpol notice and has been in Canadian police custody for over a week. Baba Siddique, 66, was shot dead on October 12 last year outside his son's office in Bandra (East), Mumbai. Three assailants carried out the attack. His son had alleged that a builder lobby involved in a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project was responsible, but police ruled out this angle. Instead, their chargesheet pointed to Lawrence Bishnoi's Canada-based brother Anmol as the mastermind, linking the murder to Siddique's alleged connections with Dawood Ibrahim and actor Salman Khan. So far, 26 people have been arrested from different parts of the country, including Pune, Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich, Haryana, Dombivli and Karjat. They include Shivkumar Gautam alias Shiva, who is accused of firing the shots. All 26 are facing charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). Who is Zeeshan Akhtar Zeeshan Akhtar is a 22-year-old from Punjab. He is accused of being a key conspirator in Baba Siddique's murder. Police say Akhtar planned the killing, managed finances through more than 10 bank accounts, and coordinated with other accused. He worked closely with jailed shooter Gurmel Singh and helped arrange weapons and shelter for the attackers. Akhtar reportedly left Mumbai a month before the murder to avoid raising suspicion. He is linked to the Lawrence and Anmol Bishnoi gang. Akhtar is the second accused to be detained in Canada after Anmol Bishnoi.

Amid buzz over Jayant Patil's exit, fresh NCP(SP) faces join race to replace him

At the 26th foundation day celebrations of his party Tuesday, Maharashtra NCP(SP) president Jayant Patil created a stir as he offered to resign from his post for the second time within a year claiming 'the opportunity to lead the party should be given to a new face'. Even as Patil's statement saw an uproar from party workers, unlike last time, it has triggered speculations about his successor and possible exit from the NCP(SP) after the party's patriarch Sharad Pawar indicated that it would 'look for new faces to lead'. In his address, Pawar did not insist that Patil continue in his post and also did not praise his leadership, merely saying, 'I will sit and discuss the issue (of electing a new state president) with prominent leaders of the party. We will take a collective decision. We want to ensure that a new face leads the party in every district and taluka. We will work to create a new generation of party workers and leaders across the state.' Pawar's comments have led a section of NCP(SP) leaders to believe that Patil may not stay in the party if he steps down. 'The doors of the BJP are open for him (Jayant Patil). Evidence to this is Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's frequent praise of Patil on the floor of the Assembly. He may join the BJP or the (Ajit Pawar-led) NCP,' an NCP(SP) leader said on the condition of anonymity. However, veteran NCP leader Ankush Kakde, who is seen to be close to Sharad Pawar, claimed there was 'no immediate worry about leadership'. 'I think Patil will be at the helm till the (upcoming) civic polls,' he said. Meanwhile, Pawar's announcement has put the spotlight on the NCP(SP)'s young leaders like former ministers Jitendra Awhad, Rajesh Tope and Shashikant Shinde, Lok Sabha MP Amol Kolhe and Pawar's grandnephew Rohit Pawar, who are seen to be in the running to replace Patil. Key contenders Rohit and Patil have had strained ties. In June last year, at the party's foundation day event, Rohit was the first leader to target Patil over issues concerning the party's functioning. While reprimanding Rohit for raking up such issues publicly, Patil had then offered to quit as state president, saying he would remain in the post only till the Assembly elections (held in November 2024). However, Rohit offered an olive branch and said he had no intention to lead the party and subsequently 'praised' Patil's work. Though this time there are hardly any dissenting voices against Patil, sources said one of the key reasons for him offering to quit his post are the number of Enforcement Directorate (ED) cases against him, like the one over his alleged involvement in the IF&FS scam. Since the ED's summons to Patil in 2023, the IF&FS case has not moved forward. Sources in the BJP said that 'Patil's amicable relations with Fadnavis have worked to his advantage'. Awhad, on the other hand, is seen to be close to Pawar Senior as well as Baramati MP Supriya Sule, Pawar's daughter. Seen as strong voice which takes on the ruling Mahayuti strongly over various issues, the OBC leader is seen to have made a place for himself among the Maratha community for his attacks on former minister Dhananjay Munde and his supporters over the murder of Massajog sarpanch Sanjay Deshmukh. Another frontrunner in the reckoning to replace Patil, Shashikant Shinde is an MLC, who had been an MLA from Satara district several times. He lost narrowly to the BJP's Udayanraje Bhosale from the Satara Lok Sabha seat in last year's polls. Tope, who hails from Jalna and had drawn praise for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic as state health minister in the previous Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, has a clean image. Sule in the running? Even as sources said Sule was only keen to take over the reins of the NCP(SP) at the national level if Pawar Senior decides to step away, a section of the party believes she should take over the mantle from Patil. 'Pawar saheb is our national leader and Sule should take charge of Maharashtra, a key state for the party… She is a capable leader who has proved her credentials. Recently, she even represented the country abroad (as the head of one of the multi-party delegations for global outreach on Operation Sindoor) and drew accolades. Even the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) trusted her,' NCP (SP) leader Mahesh Tapase said.
