Amid buzz over Jayant Patil's exit, fresh NCP(SP) faces join race to replace him

At the 26th foundation day celebrations of his party Tuesday, Maharashtra NCP(SP) president Jayant Patil created a stir as he offered to resign from his post for the second time within a year claiming 'the opportunity to lead the party should be given to a new face'.
Even as Patil's statement saw an uproar from party workers, unlike last time, it has triggered speculations about his successor and possible exit from the NCP(SP) after the party's patriarch Sharad Pawar indicated that it would 'look for new faces to lead'.
In his address, Pawar did not insist that Patil continue in his post and also did not praise his leadership, merely saying, 'I will sit and discuss the issue (of electing a new state president) with prominent leaders of the party. We will take a collective decision. We want to ensure that a new face leads the party in every district and taluka. We will work to create a new generation of party workers and leaders across the state.'
Pawar's comments have led a section of NCP(SP) leaders to believe that Patil may not stay in the party if he steps down. 'The doors of the BJP are open for him (Jayant Patil). Evidence to this is Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's frequent praise of Patil on the floor of the Assembly. He may join the BJP or the (Ajit Pawar-led) NCP,' an NCP(SP) leader said on the condition of anonymity.
However, veteran NCP leader Ankush Kakde, who is seen to be close to Sharad Pawar, claimed there was 'no immediate worry about leadership'. 'I think Patil will be at the helm till the (upcoming) civic polls,' he said.
Meanwhile, Pawar's announcement has put the spotlight on the NCP(SP)'s young leaders like former ministers Jitendra Awhad, Rajesh Tope and Shashikant Shinde, Lok Sabha MP Amol Kolhe and Pawar's grandnephew Rohit Pawar, who are seen to be in the running to replace Patil.
Key contenders
Rohit and Patil have had strained ties. In June last year, at the party's foundation day event, Rohit was the first leader to target Patil over issues concerning the party's functioning.
While reprimanding Rohit for raking up such issues publicly, Patil had then offered to quit as state president, saying he would remain in the post only till the Assembly elections (held in November 2024). However, Rohit offered an olive branch and said he had no intention to lead the party and subsequently 'praised' Patil's work.
Though this time there are hardly any dissenting voices against Patil, sources said one of the key reasons for him offering to quit his post are the number of Enforcement Directorate (ED) cases against him, like the one over his alleged involvement in the IF&FS scam. Since the ED's summons to Patil in 2023, the IF&FS case has not moved forward. Sources in the BJP said that 'Patil's amicable relations with Fadnavis have worked to his advantage'.
Awhad, on the other hand, is seen to be close to Pawar Senior as well as Baramati MP Supriya Sule, Pawar's daughter. Seen as strong voice which takes on the ruling Mahayuti strongly over various issues, the OBC leader is seen to have made a place for himself among the Maratha community for his attacks on former minister Dhananjay Munde and his supporters over the murder of Massajog sarpanch Sanjay Deshmukh.
Another frontrunner in the reckoning to replace Patil, Shashikant Shinde is an MLC, who had been an MLA from Satara district several times. He lost narrowly to the BJP's Udayanraje Bhosale from the Satara Lok Sabha seat in last year's polls.
Tope, who hails from Jalna and had drawn praise for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic as state health minister in the previous Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, has a clean image.
Sule in the running?
Even as sources said Sule was only keen to take over the reins of the NCP(SP) at the national level if Pawar Senior decides to step away, a section of the party believes she should take over the mantle from Patil. 'Pawar saheb is our national leader and Sule should take charge of Maharashtra, a key state for the party… She is a capable leader who has proved her credentials. Recently, she even represented the country abroad (as the head of one of the multi-party delegations for global outreach on Operation Sindoor) and drew accolades. Even the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) trusted her,' NCP (SP) leader Mahesh Tapase said.

This was stated by Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo during a press meet here on Thursday marking 11 years of Central government's service agenda and one year of Odisha's visionary leadership under Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. We made four historic decisions within 24 minutes of our first Cabinet meeting including opening all the four doors of Sri Jagannath Temple at Puri, opening 'Ratna Bhandar', setting up a corpus fund of Rs 500-crore and introduction of 'Subhadra' Yojana. We have fulfilled the hopes of the people. Whatever we promised, we would deliver during our present term. We will go to the people, take their feedback and complete the remaining four years', Singh Deo said. On the future agenda, the Deputy Chief Minister said the government is committed to procure a cargo aircraft to export green vegetables and fresh fruits from Odisha. Anbumani can be PMK chief after 2026 polls, says Ramadoss

PMK's founder S Ramadoss on Thursday announced that he will decide on whom to have an alliance with and reiterated that he will continue to head the party until the 2026 assembly elections. 'I went to his place; he (Anbumani) came to mine, but in the end, the discussions ended in a stalemate. Now, it's either me or him,' Ramadoss told reporters at his residence in Villupuram. 'Until the 2026 assembly elections, I am the president of PMK,' Ramadoss said. 'I will decide on the alliance and the candidates and after 2026 Anbumani can take over. I will never expel him from the party.' PMK, an influential party in Tamil Nadu with a 5% core vote bank from the Vanniyar community, is a key ally of the NDA. Over the decades, PMK has swung between the DMK and AIADMK. PMK has been in turmoil with the rift between the father and son. Recently, Ramadoss said that he wanted to align with the AIADMK but Anbumani insisted that they remain with the BJP. Ramadoss said that tensions with his son started seven years ago at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in in Delhi when Anbumani told him that he would take care of the party. Ramadoss said that it was at that moment he learnt that Anbumani wanted to fully control the PMK, long before he was made its president in 2023. Meanwhile, Anbumani did not react to his father's remarks on Thursday but released statements criticising the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu and offered condolences for the plane crash in Ahmedabad. On June 5, Anbumani met his father at his residence but no truce seemed to have been called. After Anbumani left, RSS ideologue Gurumurthy and sidelined AIADMK leader and former Chennai mayor Saidai Duraisamy met senior Ramadoss. Last week, Ramadoss was in Chennai to meet Gurumurthy at his residence. On May 29, senior Ramadoss told reporters that he regretted making Anbumani a Union minister (in the UPA-I government) when he was only 35-year-old. He also said that though he wanted to align with the AIADMK, Anbumani and his wife convinced him to stay with the BJP. To be clear, Ramadoss was only confirming on record what has been known off the record ever since the AIADMK left the BJP in 2023 before patching up this April. After the split, those in the NDA including PMK stayed with the BJP with only the DMDK (Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam) taking the AIADMK's side. According to Ramadoss, the PMK and AIADMK are natural allies and said that they would have won 10 seats together in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls which was swept by the ruling DMK-led coalition. On April 11, the 85-year-old patriarch took over the party from his son and successor Anbumani. The father made himself president of the PMK once again and announced that Anbumani would be its working president on the day Union home minister Amit Shah arrived in Chennai. On the following day, Shah announced that the BJP and AIADMK have patched up after 19 months and will fight the 2026 elections together. Anbumani then challenged his father asserting that he continues to be the party chief since he was elected by PMK's general council. Anbumani's Rajya Sabha tenure ends in July. Senior Ramadoss accused his son of threatening PMK officer bearers against attending his meeting in which only 13 out of 220 party office bearers turned up on May 16. Ramadoss and Anbumani have been sparring publicly since December 2024 after Anbumani objected to Ramadoss' decision to appoint his nephew, P Mukundan as the youth wing chief of PMK.
