Yankees come back to beat Rays 7-5 behind Bellinger, Volpe and Fried

CBS Newsa day ago
Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer, Anthony Volpe also went deep and the New York Yankees erased an early deficit Tuesday night in a 7-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Max Fried recovered from a rough start and threw a career-high 111 pitches in 6 2/3 innings. Volpe delivered a tiebreaking single in the fourth and launched a 452-foot homer to center field in the eighth, the longest of his career.
He also committed two throwing errors at shortstop, the second one on a play that should have ended the game. That gave Tampa Bay another chance before Devin Williams struck out All-Star Jonathan Aranda with runners at second and third for his 17th save.
New York pulled within four games of first-place Toronto in the AL East after falling 6 1/2 back last weekend.
Fried (12-4) allowed four runs — two earned — and four hits while surpassing his previous career high of 110 pitches for Atlanta at Philadelphia in September 2022.
On a sweltering 92-degree night, Fried gave up a two-run triple to Jonny DeLuca in the first inning — three batters after Volpe's throwing error on a forceout attempt at second base.
Aranda homered leading off the third to make it 3-0, but Fried retired his next 14 hitters.
Bellinger's drive off starter Joe Boyle (1-1) tied it in the bottom half, and Volpe put the Yankees ahead with his RBI single in the fourth. Then he stole third and scored on a throwing error by new Rays catcher Nick Fortes.
Paul Goldschmidt added a run-scoring single that made it 6-3.
Fried was removed after giving up an RBI double to Taylor Walls in the seventh.
Yankees reliever Jonathan Loáisiga retired Yandy Díaz to end the seventh and gave up consecutive hits in the eighth before Volpe started a double play on Christopher Morel's grounder.
Bellinger reached 20 homers for the fifth time. … Volpe hit his fifth homer in 11 games, but he leads the majors with 15 errors. ... The Rays dropped to 8-19 in their last 27 games following a 25-9 stretch.
Yankees rookie Will Warren (6-5, 4.82 ERA) opposes Rays RHP Zack Littell (8-8, 3.72) on Wednesday night.

Yankees tie it 3 times in late innings before finally beating Rays 5-4 in 11

NEW YORK — Ryan McMahon drove in the winning run in the 11th inning with a single to deep center field, and the New York Yankees edged the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 on Wednesday night in a back-and-forth finish. Trent Grisham hit a tying homer in the eighth, Anthony Volpe did the same in the ninth and Cody Bellinger evened the score again for the Yankees with an RBI triple in the 10th. Moments later, New York took advantage of a critical balk by reliever Kevin Kelly (0-3) to remain four games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East. Grisham's leadoff homer in the eighth and Giancarlo Stanton's run-scoring single off Bryan Baker gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Josh Lowe put Tampa Bay back in front with a two-run homer off closer Devin Williams in the ninth, but Volpe went deep against Pete Fairbanks with one out in the bottom half. Jonathan Aranda hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly against Luke Weaver in the 10th to put the Rays ahead 4-3 — but Jasson Domínguez made a terrific leaping catch at the left-field wall to prevent additional damage on the play. Bellinger tied it with his triple to right-center off Edwin Uceta in the bottom half. Kelly's balk advanced runners to second and third with nobody out in the 11th, forcing the Rays to play their outfield shallow. McMahon, acquired last week from Colorado , hit a long fly to center that landed just shy of the warning track. Tim Hill (4-3) worked a scoreless inning for the win, aided by McMahon's leaping grab at third base to snag Lowe's leadoff line drive. Brandon Lowe doubled home a third-inning run for the Rays in his return from the injured list . Volpe hit his sixth homer in 12 games but committed his third throwing error in two nights at shortstop. He leads the majors with 16 errors. The Rays (54-55) dropped below .500 for the first time since May 24. They have lost eight of 10 and are a major league-worst 8-20 since June 27 following an MLB-best 25-9 stretch. ... Grisham set a career high with his 18th home run. Rays RHP Ryan Pepiot (6-8, 3.42 ERA) faces RHP Marcus Stroman (2-2, 6.09) in the finale of the four-game series Thursday afternoon. ___ AP MLB:

August 5th Revealed as David Robertson's Debut Date for Phillies

August 5th Revealed as David Robertson's Debut Date for Phillies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's tough to say that the Philadelphia Phillies made the perfect decision when they went out and signed David Robertson on Sunday night. However, there's a reason why many contenders around the league were interested in the veteran's service. Robertson has already pitched in Philadelphia throughout his career and was staying ready during the early stages of the year. It's unfortunate that he didn't latch onto a team until the end of July, but it isn't anything that the Phillies can be too worried about. Ultimately, they saw his workout up in the Northeast, and they liked what they saw. He's taken the deal, and the expectation is for him to join the big league roster sooner rather than later. According to Todd Zolecki of Robertson is expected to join the Phillies on August 5, which is the earliest possible date. 'David Robertson expects to pitch for Triple-A this week. The earliest he can join the Phillies is Aug. 5, which is the expectation,' he wrote. Throughout his career, Robertson has been utilized in high-leverage situations, particularly for the New York Yankees. He pitched with the Phillies during the 2019 and 2022 campaigns, posting a 2.70 ERA in 22 outings in 2022. During the 2024 campaign for the Texas Rangers, he posted a 3.00 ERA. For how cheap the Phillies got him for, even if he's used as strictly a setup man throughout the later stages of the campaign, he'll give the Phillies some much-needed depth as they head into the postseason. Austin Wells loses track of the outs in 9th inning and costs the Yankees a late opportunity

NEW YORK (AP) — Perhaps nobody was happier the Yankees won Wednesday night than catcher Austin Wells, after his embarrassing mental lapse on the bases cost New York an opportunity in the ninth inning. 'I think I just was being an idiot," he said. Anthony Volpe hit a tying homer off Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks with one out in the ninth, then Wells singled and advanced to second base when Trent Grisham tried to bunt for a hit. Grisham was thrown out at first for the second out and credited with a sacrifice. Wells, however, thought the inning was over and wandered off the bag. He got tagged in a rundown for the third out, sending a back-and-forth game to extra innings as fans in the Yankee Stadium crowd of 45,355 groaned. 'He thought there were three outs," New York manager Aaron Boone said. "Obviously, can't happen. With the base coaches we say the right thing. We go through with the pitcher, their time to the plate and number (of) outs. What do you say? Can't happen.' Instead of having seven-time All-Star and 2022 NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt at bat with the potential winning run on second base, the Yankees were resigned to keep slugging it out with Tampa Bay in extra innings. 'Just thought there was three outs,' Wells said. 'Very embarrassed and disappointed, for sure. You know, you let the guys down when you do that. You give away an out like that in a big spot, so that's disappointing — and definitely no good thoughts going on there.' New York fell behind 4-3 in the 10th, tied it again on Cody Bellinger's run-scoring triple and finally won 5-4 in the 11th on Ryan McMahon's game-ending single to deep center field after a critical balk by reliever Kevin Kelly. The Yankees remained four games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East. 'I mean, everyone did such a great job tonight," Wells said. "Started in the beginning with (rookie pitcher Will Warren). Gave us a great position to come back in that game. And I mean, all the huge hits that happened and then all the huge innings that the relievers threw. What a game. And that's just something that we've been needing, and to come back like that is huge.'
