PPP's Faryal terms canals work halt victory for national unity
"Today is a day of triumph for Pakistan's federal unity, the supremacy of the Constitution, and the rights of farmers," said Talpur in a statement.
She pointed out that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's principled leadership and the peaceful protest of the people of Sindh have proven that when the stance is just and the intention is pure, the government is compelled to listen to the people.
Talpur called PM Shehbaz Sharif's announcement to halt work on new canals and the decision to convene the CCI meeting on May 2 a wise and prudent step.
"The Prime Minister's stance is a positive move towards strengthening democratic traditions, recognising provincial autonomy, and empowering constitutional institutions," she noted.

27th Amendment ‘on the cards'?: Bilawal dismisses ‘baseless rumours'
KARACHI: PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Tuesday dismissed talk of any potential legislation regarding a 27th constitutional amendment as 'baseless rumours'. Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad about the matter, Bilawal addressed the 'baseless rumours', stating: 'So far, no federal minister, prime minister or party member has approached me regarding any amendments.' He also highlighted that the 26th Amendment was passed after reaching a consensus with compromise from political parties. 'PPP wanted constitutional courts, but we compromised,' he said. In a post on X, the PPP quoted him as saying, 'The 26th Constitutional Amendment is an eternal success. Judicial reforms and constitutional courts were a demand of the Charter of Democracy, but we prioritised a constitutional bench over a constitutional court for the sake of consensus.' Though the speculations are rife, there has been no official word regarding the 27th Constitutional Amendment. At present, the proposal to further reform the judiciary is at a very initial stage, but consultations are reportedly underway within the ruling PML-N and some legal circles. Despite these purported consultations, any draft for this proposed bill has yet to see the light of day. While responding to a question about amending the National Finance Commission (NFC) award, Bilawal said, 'Absolutely. Further changes must come in NFC.' He continued, 'The previous NFC award was given before passing the 18th Amendment, which was before 2010.' He said that various responsibilities of the federal government were handed to the provinces, adding, 'But the NFC is the same as it was prior to the 18th Amendment.' The PPP chairman continued, 'The Constitution says that the NFC award must be regularly given after five years. It is already mentioned that the shares of provincial governments cannot be reduced in new NFC awards.' 'All provinces must be given more resources as per the increased responsibilities after the 18th Amendment.' He added, 'We must immediately call NFC and give new awards. All provinces must be given resources according to the 18th Amendment.' Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Sharjeel highlights constitutional guarantees for minorities
KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that while the green crescent flag symbolises Pakistan's independence, its white portion stands as a guarantee for the rights and freedoms of minorities. He said that Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah had stressed the importance of granting equal rights to all minorities residing in the country, a principle that is also enshrined in the Constitution. During his address in the Sindh Assembly, Sharjeel Inam Memon said that minorities in Pakistan, particularly in Sindh, have always been accorded respect, protection and representation. He said Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was the only political party that had given representation to minorities not only on reserved seats but also on general seats. Citing examples, he noted that Mahesh Kumar Malani, Gianchand Israni and Hari Ram were elected to general seats. Sharjeel added that the decision of the PPP leadership to send Krishna Kolhi to the Senate in her traditional attire was widely appreciated at the international level. He said 'when President Asif Ali Zardari launched the Benazir Income Support Programme, a significant number of its initial beneficiaries belonged to minority communities.' He added that in the ongoing 2.1 million housing project in Sindh, a substantial number of houses, along with ownership rights, were being allocated to minority families. He said Pakistan presented a unique example in the world where security was provided to temples, churches and other places of worship, whereas in India, minorities enjoyed no protection for their life and property.
