That Old Bookcase? It May Be Your Dream Shoe Organizer.

One of the biggest benefits of using a bookcase instead of traditional shoe storage is that you can create a quasi-store experience in your closet, Jones said. She said she urges her clients to organize their closets using a merchandising approach, since she believes this lets them 'shop their closet' instead of buying more. It's also an opportunity to create a more-inviting and aesthetically pleasing setup that showcases your personality and taste. For example, to mimic a store display and maximize storage, organize and divide shelf storage by using risers or clear shelves. This will allow you to stack up two or more pairs of shoes within one shelf. You can also organize shoes by color or style, so it's easier to go straight to what you're looking for. The adjustable shelves let you adapt your closet to each season, fitting in anything from beach sandals and heels to knee-high boots. Frances Solá-Santiago/NYT Wirecutter Depending on the size of your shoe collection, you can also take a seasonal approach. With the Billy's adjustable bookshelves, it's easy to customize which shoes you display in the cold and warm months. Personally, I like to space out shelves during the fall and winter, so I can fit bulkier, taller shoe styles, including knee-high boots and snow boots. When spring arrives — which usually means shorter footwear like kitten heels and flat sandals — I like to stack shelves closer together to fit more shoes. For the latter scenario, you may need more shelves. For most of its Billy bookcase designs, IKEA sells additional shelves as singles (for under $10!), and that makes it easy. Although I've loved the simple, adjustable design of the Billy bookshelf, remember to allow your lifestyle to inform which bookcase and setup work best for you and your shoes. 'The cognitive load gets reduced,' Jones said. 'You don't feel overwhelmed or stressed when you group it by behavioral context rather than by type.' As much as I dream of the perfect Architectural Digest –worthy shoe closet (complete with a library-style ladder, velvet cushioned shelves, and lighting I can dim to my taste), my alarm clock always snaps me back to reality. And for now, I'm content with my $50 solution. This article was edited by Katie Okamoto and Hannah Rimm. From sofas to storage boxes to Swedish chocolate, these are the IKEA items that Wirecutter's staffers love. Whether your closet is tiny and unruly or massive and overflowing, we've tested and found the best solutions for keeping everything in order. After considering roughly 50 shoe racks and cabinets, here are our four favorite ones for organizing shoes in closets and entryways. It turns out that my partner and I very much needed a dedicated storage solution for our 40-plus pairs of shoes.

‘Who is this?' Serena Williams just broke Instagram with this skinny selfie

Serena Williams can't win. Scratch that. The tennis icon can win — on the court, snagging 23 Grand Slam titles throughout her incredible career. But on the Internet? Forget about it. Last week, Williams astonished her Instagram followers with a slimmed down appearance, posing in front of a mirror in a black slinky long skirt and crop top. The 43-year-old mom of two has been documenting her weight loss journey a while, working on shedding the pounds. Last summer, the Palm Beach Gardens resident hilariously launched a personal challenge to get back into a Valentino denim skirt she acquired in her pre-pregnancy days. The champ reportedly went from 188 down to 154 pounds by the end of 2024 through a combination of diet (a nutritionist helped) and exercise (something Williams knows well). The California native also revealed she used Lingo, a continuous glucose monitor that tracks blood sugar levels in real time. But in this latest post, it looks as if that cute designer skirt would fall right off of her. Keyboard busybodies, naturally, expressed their unsolicited opinions in the comments section. Some fans were supportive and complimentary telling her she looked amazing. Yet others were concerned by the sudden, dramatic changeup and wondered if she was possibly ill. 'No joking. Is Serena OK? This has been a shocking weight loss. I certainly DON'T want anything to be wrong with her!!!' Some social media users assumed the athlete was on a GLP-1 weight loss drug, like so many other (non-diabetic) Hollywood folks these days. 'Just when you thought the legend was the bad arse who embraced her strength and curves, we now get an Ozempic version of her. Now she looks like everyone else.' A handful didn't even recognize the sports star; e.g., 'Who is this woman?' Buried in the comments were at least a few who didn't attempt to play judge and jury: 'People been on Serena about her body her whole life. Let her live.' But it seems that Williams is fine and focused on wellness so that she can be around to watch her daughters grow up. 'We're all thinking about longevity and everything that we can have at our fingertips, but longevity is something that we have to work at,' she told USA Today late last year. 'And so for me, I'm in that journey in my life where I want to work at that, and I want to create the best scenario I can for that.'

If you define brunch purely by how many mimosas you can take down, then this list might not be for you. This guide is more interested in how disparate cultures tackle the subject. Several spots offer the tentpoles of the genre like velvety omelets and crispy waffles, while others make room for Indian, Eritrean, Moroccan and Filipino flavors. A few are back-to-basics try-hards, making virtually everything from scratch, while one spot offers a multi-course tasting menu. Brunch doesn't have to be routine, but it should be delicious. — C.H.
