Sulphur man charged with 34 counts of child porn possession
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office spokesperson Kayla Vincent said on April 9 detectives with the Special Victims Unit began investigating the tips using their Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce.
During the investigation detectives learned Matthew T. Simien, 31, was in possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
Vincent said after further investigation, on April 17, detectives issued a warrant for his arrest.
'Detectives attempted to locate him but were unsuccessful,' she said.
On May 5, Simien was located at his residence and arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center. He is charged with 34 counts of pornography involving juveniles.
Judge Michael Canaday set his bond at $1.7 million.

Former University of Arkansas professor pleads not guilty to possessing CSAM
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A former University of Arkansas professor accused of possessing child sexual abuse materials has pleaded not guilty, according to court documents. Joshua McGee, 34, was arrested on July 11 for one count of possession of child pornography. McGee entered a not guilty plea during his arraignment on Aug. 11. His trial is set to begin on Oct. 9 at 8 a.m. at the Washington County Courthouse. A preliminary report said that in June, the Fayetteville Police Department started an investigation after an IP address registered to McGee had downloaded 'large amounts' of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM). Investigators found that the IP address had downloaded files from June to July 2025. Officers went to McGee's residence on July 11 to speak with him. McGee confessed to downloading multiple files of CSAM as recently as a week before being interviewed. However, when asked if he had CSAM stored on his phone or other electronic devices, McGee said no. A thumb drive reportedly contained multiple folders of CSAM, each labeled with specific categories. A hidden folder app on McGee's cell phone also contained CSAM, according to the report. A spokesperson with the University of Arkansas told KNWA/FOX24 following McGee's arrest that he was a teaching assistant professor of exercise science, and he had been placed on administrative leave. McGee's profile has since been removed from the university's website. KNWA/FOX24 reached out to the university on Aug. 12, and the spokesperson said that McGee is no longer employed by the university. Illinois State Police trooper arrested on federal child pornography charges
An Illinois State Police trooper, who is also a youth hockey referee, was arrested this week on federal child pornography charges. Colin Gruenke, of Deerfield, is charged with one count of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography, according to federal court records. According to the charges, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children first learned in September 2024 that someone on the social media platform Kik had used two accounts to upload images of child pornography. An investigation linked the user's email address to Gruenke, and after obtaining multiple search warrants, federal agents confronted him at Illinois State Police headquarters in Des Plaines. At the time, Gruenke was holding an iPhone in his hand, and agents seized it and found evidence of deleted images of child pornography, with some of the children appearing to be as young as 4 years old. Agents also executed a search warrant at his home, where they found a flash drive containing approximately 200 videos of child pornography, including numerous videos showing children being sexually abused by adults, including children as young as 10. Gruenke was arrested on Wednesday, and made his first court appearance the same day, and was ordered to remain in custody pending a detention hearing on Monday. As part of their investigation, federal authorities learned Gruenke plays in an adult hockey league in Northbrook, where he is also a youth hockey referee. Illinois State Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Gruenke's arrest.

Louisiana sues Roblox, alleging platform enables child exploitation
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has filed a lawsuit against the online gaming platform Roblox, accusing the company of enabling the distribution of child sexual abuse material and facilitating the sexual exploitation of children in the state. In a complaint filed in state court, Murrill's office says Roblox 'knowingly and intentionally fails to implement basic safety controls to protect child users from predators,' despite having 380 million active monthly users – more than half of whom are under 16. Nearly one-third are under the age of 13. Roblox launched in 2006 but did not begin reporting incidents of child exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children until 2019 – 13 years later. Even after reporting began, the state says the numbers have been 'pitifully minor' compared to other major platforms. Roblox submitted 24,522 CyberTip reports over the past several years, while Facebook, Instagram, Google and Snapchat collectively averaged 3.5 million during the same period. According to Murrill, Roblox's reports account for less than 1% of the exploitation cases received in Louisiana over the past five years. In 2025, only 2.48% of CyberTips to Louisiana authorities came from Roblox. 'It is a rarity when Roblox actually does report child exploitation that occurs on their platform,' the lawsuit says, adding that the company's lack of age verification and safety protocols hinders law enforcement investigations. Murrill accused Roblox of prioritizing 'user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety,' warning parents about 'the clear and present danger posed to their children' by the platform. The lawsuit notes that Roblox does not require age verification or parental permission during sign-up, allowing predators to pose as children and minors to bypass age restrictions. The complaint cites a recent Livingston Parish case in which a suspect arrested for possessing child sexual abuse material was actively using Roblox and employing voice-altering technology to lure minors. The lawsuit also references a report revealing a Roblox group with over 3,300 members allegedly trading child pornography and soliciting sex acts from minors. Murrill said she supports new state measures like Rep. Kim Carver's Act 481, which requires app stores to verify users' ages and obtain parental permission for minors' downloads. She argued that both app store operators and app developers must share responsibility for protecting children. 'There are pretty clear tech tools that they could be using, and they are not,' Murrill said. 'Predators can't walk into a school or playground without getting arrested, but they can get just about anywhere on these apps and find your kids.' Louisiana's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force is assisting in such cases. It works with 50 sheriffs' offices, 11 police departments, the Louisiana State Police, the FBI, and Homeland Security, . The state is seeking permanent injunctive relief prohibiting Roblox from violating Louisiana's Unfair Trade Practices law, banning false claims about its safety measures, and ordering restitution to the state along with any additional civil damages allowed by law.
