TMC must be thrown out, only then peace can return to Bengal: Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan

Hans India4 hours ago

New Delhi: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday condemned the gang-rape incident at South Calcutta Law College and launched a scathing attack at the Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led government of shielding the perpetrators, with alleged links to the ruling party.
Speaking at a 'Mann Ki Baat' event in Panihati, North 24 Parganas, Pradhan declared, 'This is not a matter for a CBI inquiry. The culprits will be tried in the people's court of Bengal. They must be thrown out — only then will peace return to Bengal.'
His statements assume significance as it comes ahead of the high-stakes 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. In the last few months, incidents like gang-rape incident at South Calcutta Law College, RG Kar Medical college rape case, series of sexual assault at Sandeshkhali has already put TMC at the backfoot and has given an opportunity to the BJP, which is eyeing to make inroads into West Bengal, once a bastion of CPM.
The minister, accompanied by MoS Education and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and BJP's Kolkata North Suburban District President Chandi Charan Roy, launched a fierce attack on the TMC over recent incidents of lawlessness and alleged sexual violence in the state. 'What is going on in Bengal? The RG Kar incident has already shaken the conscience of the state. And now, another heinous crime has taken place at South Calcutta Law College in Kasba — both linked to TMC elements,' he said.
Pradhan lamented the decline of Bengal's legacy in education and culture, invoking icons such as Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, and Rishi Aurobindo. 'This is the same Bengal that once led the world in knowledge, science, and spirituality. Today, it is in the news for gang-rape and anarchy under Trinamool's rule.'
The minister also reacted sharply to controversial remarks made by TMC MLA Madan Mitra. 'It is their job to rub salt into the wounds. This arrogance comes from holding on to power for too long. Ravana and Duryodhana also fell because of such arrogance. History and time will answer them.'
Calling TMC a mere extension of the 'old Congress culture,' Pradhan said, 'What else can one expect? They remain indifferent to the people's suffering while shamelessly protecting their own.'
The BJP has demanded swift justice in the law college case and has intensified its campaign to corner TMC over worsening law and order in Bengal.

‘Honeymoon' and ‘misogyny' barbs fly as TMC MPs Mahua Moitra, Kalyan Banerjee spar over Kolkata gang-rape

The growing differences between Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders went public after TMC MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra engaged in a war of words over the gangrape of a law student at South Kolkata Law College. All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) MP Kalyan Banerjee and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra at Parliament during the Budget session in New Delhi.(ANI file) Kalyan Banerjee launched a personal attack on Moitra, saying that the Lok Sabha MP from Krishnanagar is back in India after one and a half months after her honeymoon. Banerjee also hit back at Mahua's 'anti-women' charge against him, saying she has broken up a family and married a 65-year-old guy. "Mahua Moitra has come back to India after one month and 15 days after completing her honeymoon. After coming back to India, she has started fighting with me! She accuses me of being anti-woman. What is she? She has broken up a 40-year marriage and married a guy of 65 years. Did she not hurt the lady?" Kalyan Banerjee said. Banerjee's scathing remark against Moitra came after she termed the TMC MP's comments on Kolkata law college gangrape "disgusting." How did the latest flare-up start? Banerjee, while reacting to the gangrape in Kolkata earlier this week, had said, "What can be done if a friend rapes his friend?" While cautioning women to remain cautious of those with 'dirty mindsets,' he had questioned if police should be deployed to schools. Will the Police be there in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her (victim)?' Banerjee said. The Trinamool Congress condemned Kalyan Banerjee's statement, saying the remark was made in his 'personal capacity.' "The remarks made by MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra concerning the heinous crime at South Calcutta Law College were made in their personal capacities. The party unequivocally disassociates itself from their statements and strongly condemns the same. These views do not reflect the position of the party in any manner whatsoever," the TMC said in a post on X. Mahua Moitra, who previously had a public spat with Kalyan Banerjee, took a 'misogyny' jibe at the MP while sharing the TMC statement. "Misogyny in India cuts across party lines. What differentiates @AITCofficial is that we condemn these disgusting comments no matter who makes them," Mahua Moitra posted on X. The war of words between the Trinamool MPs is seen as a cause of concern for the Mamata Banerjee government as the assembly elections are just months away. The BJP has also drawn a TMC connection with the accused, claiming the prime suspect, Manojit Mishra, is associated with the ruling party, a charge Mamata's party has categorically denied. So far, the Bengal police have arrested four people, including three accused, in the gangrape case. The police have also collected the evidence from the law institute and also obtained CCTV footage that corroborates the victim's claim of gangrape.

Spreading Gita's message in 'mohallas' will strengthen Hindu Rashtra: Maharashtra minister Rane

PUNE: Maharashtra Minister and BJP leader Nitesh Rane said on Sunday that the idea of the Hindu Rashtra would be strengthened if teachings of the Bhagavad Gita were propagated in "mohallas" for the "transformation of thoughts". Noting that the Gita never preaches hatred or advocates (religious) conversions, Rane said, "If its teachings spread to mohallas (Muslim areas), even their thoughts will transform. This will make our Hindu Rashtra stronger". "Teachings of the Bhagavad Gita promote harmony and transformation of thought. Its message should reach every corner," he told reporters. Amid a row over the inclusion of Hindi in the school curriculum from class 1 and demonstrations staged by the Opposition, Rane said, "No language is being made compulsory. Students can opt for Sanskrit as the third language if they wish". The BJP leader claimed he never heard lyricist Javed Akhtar, actor Aamir Khan, or Congress leader Rahul Gandhi speaking in the Marathi language. The Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have announced to organise a joint march against the "imposition" of Hindi in schools on July 5. "Why not hold rallies in areas like Behrampada or Mohammad Ali Road? These are the places where Hindi is spoken. The day 'azaan' (Islamic call for prayer) is delivered in Marathi, we will know there is true respect for the language," he told reporters. Rane further suggested that instead of deepening divides among Hindus, efforts should be made to teach Marathi to those who have lived in Mumbai for decades but have not embraced the language. When asked about Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar advocating the introduction of Hindi from class 5, Rane said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will speak with Pawar. He took a veiled swipe at Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray over the choice of language. "If you studied at Bombay Scottish, why did you not choose Sanskrit? Why Spanish or French?" he asked.
