Top Scottish hairdresser Charlie Miller - who cut the hair of the late Sir Sean Connery, Hollywood actor Leslie Nielsen, and fashion designer Donna Karan - has died at the age of 80.His sons Jason and Josh told BBC Scotland their dad, who had Alzheimer's disease for many years, died on Monday at Queen's Manor Care Home in Edinburgh. The grandfather-of-four, who leaves behind wife Janet, started his training at the age of 15 at Bob's Barber Shop in Edinburgh's West Port but later cut the hair of many A-list celebrities. The eponymous Charlie Miller brand, which is still internationally recognised, still has four salons in Edinburgh with 80 staff.
His sons said: "Our dad was so much more than the name above the salon doors."He was a force of creativity, integrity, and love - for his work, for his team, and most of all his family."Whether you knew him as a hairdresser, a mentor, a colleague, or a friend, you'll know the warmth he brought to every conversation and the generosity with which he gave his time, his talent, and his heart."They said they were heartbroken but promised to continue their father's legacy.
'Best dressed man in town'
Miller, who once had more than 100 staff working at his salons, had a career that spanned six decades.Known for his trademark silvery shoulder-length hair, he was known as the "best dressed man in town", according to his friend Victor Spence.Mr Spence told BBC Scotland: "A great man has been lost to Edinburgh and the global world of hairdressing."He has lovingly touched the lives of so many people directly and indirectly."I hope Charlie's wife, Janet, his immediate and wider family and close friends are comforted with the outpouring of love and affection for Charlie."
Miller was the first Scottish hairdresser to receive an OBE for services to hairdressing, presented by Her Majesty the Queen in 2012.He was great friends with the late Sir Tom Farmer and famously cut his hair at the North Pole.He was also three-time Scottish Hairdresser of the Year, Avant-Garde Hairdresser of the Year, and had two nominations for British Hairdresser of the Year.Miller was also a judge for major competitions around the world, including the British Hairdressing Awards, L'Oréal Colour Trophy (UK and internationally), and Creative HEAD's Most Wanted Awards. He also judged international titles such as Japanese, Dutch, and Norwegian Hairdresser of the Year.
In 2007, he began personally styling real-hair wigs for teenagers through the Teenage Cancer Trust and was instrumental in launching the 'Hair 4 U' initiative in Scotland, now operated by The Little Princess Trust. He described himself as a "spiritual nomad", exploring paths through yoga, Buddhism, and Christian mysticism, and learned from the Dalai Lama - whom he gifted a tartan-pouched hair clipper in 1988.A Charlie Miller spokeswoman said: "Charlie was not only a talented hairdresser but also a visionary leader whose passion, creativity, and commitment to excellence helped shape the careers of countless professionals across the industry. His work earned international recognition, and his salons became synonymous with quality, innovation, and style."Charlie's kindness, humility, and genuine love for people defined both his personal and professional life. He touched the lives of so many - from his loyal clients and trusted colleagues to the wider creative community."

The King and AI: A humanoid robot has painted a picture of Charles. How did it do?

Whether or not the UK will have a Royal Family in the future is something that often comes up in debate. If we do, the latest evidence suggests there will be no lack of artists around to paint them. A new portrait titled "Algorithm King" has perhaps offered a glimpse of how members of the Royal Family may be painted in the decades or even centuries ahead - after it was created by a female "robot artist" named Ai-Da. The artistic humanoid used advanced artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and a robot arm using on oil canvas to create the painting of King Charles. Ai-Da, the first robot to ever paint the monarch, also used the cameras in her eyes to help create her machine-made masterpiece. The robot previously painted a portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate the monarch's Platinum Jubilee in 2022. The two portraits, which the monarchs didn't sit for, were exhibited together at an unveiling of the portrait of King Charles as part of the AI For Good Summit hosted by the United Nations in Geneva. Ai-Da, described as being the world's first "ultra-realistic robot artist", was created by UK art dealer Aidan Meller and built in Cornwall by Engineered Arts. She uses advanced AI language modelling to enable her to have a conversation with humans. Speaking at the UN, Ai-Da said: "It's a privilege to be part of this remarkable event at the United Nations, surrounded by those shaping the future of technology and culture. Presenting my portrait of His Majesty King Charles III is not just a creative act, it's a statement about the evolving role of AI in our society, and to reflect on how artificial intelligence is shaping the cultural landscape." Simon Manley, ambassador and permanent representative to the World Trade Organisation and UN in Geneva, said at the unveiling of the portrait: "Ai-Da is not just a technological marvel, she is a cultural conversation starter. We are proud to showcase British innovation at its most imaginative, and to reflect on how emerging technologies can shape global dialogues on art, ethics and identity." Ai-Da - named after the first computer programmer Ada Lovelace - has spoken at the House of Lords, Number 10 Downing Street and at the UN. Her artwork has been exhibited all over the world from the Tate Modern, V&A, Somerset House and the Design Museum in Britain to the Pyramids in Egypt and the Venice Biennale. She made history in 2024 when a painting by her sold at Sotheby's for $1m. Mr Meller said: "The greatest artists in history grappled with their period of time, and both celebrated and questioned society's shifts. Ai-Da Robot as technology, is the perfect artist today to discuss the current developments with technology and its unfolding legacy."

Pregnant Hollywood star left shocked after Aussie reporter calls her the C-word in wild interview

Vanessa Kirby has been given a very blunt introduction to some unique Australian vernacular. The UK actress, 37, was Down Under promoting her latest film Fantastic Four: First Steps, and sat down with Pedestrian alongside co-star Pedro Pascal to chat about the superhero flick. Interviewer Rebekah Manibog surprised The Crown star, 37, with a unique choice of words as she described Vanessa's social media status. 'You've kind of become a social media icon for your force field, snatched, c***y, fierceness face,' Rebekah stated. Clearly taken aback by the surprising label, Vanessa's eyes bulged in surprise as she exclaimed: 'Oh God!, 'I don't know if that is a good thing. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The reporter attempted to assure Vanessa that it was, indeed, a positive label, but the actress appeared unconvinced until Pedro stepped in to confirm the vulgar term is not always used in the pejorative. 'F*** yeah, he said, agreeing with the reporter's assessment before adding: 'C***y face is good, babe.' Still not completely sold, Vanessa asked the Last Of Us star: 'What's that? From sunglasses, maybe?' He then gave Vanessa a definition of the term, which seemed to reassure the actress. 'C***y face just means fierce, fabulous, beautiful, strong. It's good, promise' Pedro assured his co star. A clip of the exchange was uploaded to TikTok, eliciting a swathe of comments from fans. Many were quick to point out that while the term does have a negative connotation, it is also used to describe something positive, particularly in the LGBTQIA+ community. 'Our favourite Internet daddy teaching everybody the lingo,' one fan commented. 'The validation coming from Pedro? Wow woo wooo,' another swooned, while a third chimed in with: 'Pedro Pascal being every female co-star's biggest cheerleader will never get old. Ever.' Others were quick to point out many Australians' affection for using the term as a term of endearment. 'Amazing,' one enthused. 'Such a well used word in Australia. Say it to a posh English person. Good old Pedro, jumping to the rescue.' 'Not the people outside of Australia aghast at the swears,' another joked. Yet another added: 'I can picture this interviewer's whole career flashing before her eyes when there was an inkling she might have offended THE Vanessa Kirby.' The awkward exchange comes after Vanessa recently revealed she was expecting her first child with partner Paul Rabil, 39. The Mission: Impossible star revealed that she is expecting her first child as she showed off her baby bump at The Fantastic Four photocall in Mexico on Saturday. She looked great in a stylish blue gown at the Comic Con Experience Mexico and tenderly touched her stomach as she posed on the red carpet. Vanessa and Paul first sparked dating rumours when they were spotted walking hand-in-hand through New York City in October 2022. However, Vanessa and Paul didn't make their romance Instagram official until November 2023. At the time, American Paul - who is the co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League - shared a series of photographs of the couple including one of them embracing on a beach. 'From the very minute we first met in Des Moines, around the world and back, life is far better, more purposeful and more beautiful with you,' he wrote about the film star.

Love Island's Cach breaks down in tears and is comforted by Ty in heart-wrenching scenes after dramatic recoupling as fans urge 'protect him at all costs!'

Love Island's Cacherel 'Cach' Mercer broke down in tears during Wednesday's episode following the dramatic recoupling which saw Toni Laites recouple with Harrison. Toni surprised the villa on Monday night when she picked to recouple with Harrison instead of Cach, despite telling him she was done with him. Cach entered as a Casa Amor bombshell and swept Toni off her feet, while she was on and off with Harrison. The shock turn of events left Cach in tears as he took a moment on the terrace to cry on Ty's shoulder - which left fans in tears. 'I can't believe I'm crying. I haven't cried in years,' Cach told Ty. Ty told him: 'This is real though, it's you. It's better to let stuff like this out than bottle it up. It doesn't make you any less of a man, in fact more of a man.' Love Island fans were left in tears as they took to X to share their heartbreak and urged to 'protect him at all costs'. Some comments read: 'Cach is breaking my heart', 'CASH I AM SO SORRY YOU ARE BREAKING MY HEART!!! YOU DESERVE SO MUCH BETTER!!!!!!', 'Protect Cache at all costs my heart is breaking for him', 'This is so hard to watch! Cach crying really breaks my heart', 'Okay now seeing Cach cry? My heart is breaking for this poor boy. He has a heart of gold', 'Nah, seeing 2 men like this is so beautiful. A man crying & being comforted by another man. Wow. Heart warming scenes man'. Toni and Harrison took their exes for a chat following the explosive and upsetting recoupling to explain and apologise - but neither of them have any of it. Love Island fans were left in tears as they took to X to share their heartbreak and urged to 'protect him at all costs' Cach didn't hold back as he told Toni: 'That was one of the most embarrassing things I've been through in my entire life… 'You knew what decision you wanted to make, you were just waiting for the go ahead from someone else.' As he walked off, he said: 'I can't respect that. Good luck with your endeavours.' Lauren Wood told Harrison: 'I've wasted my whole time getting to know you for no reason… To do what you've done to me tonight is so disrespectful.' 'I feel like everything has been a lie.' Love Island fans have branded Harrison 'disgusting' after he crawled back to Toni after having sex with Lauren during Tuesday night's episode and admitted it wasn't the first time. As the couple's settled down to sleep, one pair had other ideas as they were seen getting frisky under the covers. And it wasn't long until they took things to the next level as Harrison was seen whispering across the beds as he asked Harry whether he had a condom. After Harry passed the wrapper to his friend, Lauren was seen climbing on top of Harrison before the camera panned away to show their islanders shocked faces. And the next day as Lauren chatted with Helena and Meg, she confessed it wasn't the first time the couple had slept together as she admitted they had gone all the way the other night too. Yet despite the intimacy, Harrison was quick to change his mind on who he had a greater connection with as he went crawling back to Toni after news of a shock recoupling. Speaking to Harry he confessed: 'I want Toni' before he met with her on the terrace to beg her to give him another chance. And shockingly Toni once again chose to give things another go with her former flame, despite insisting she was 'done' earlier in the episode. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, fans didn't hold back with their comments as they penned: 'Harrison is disgusting you're having sex with Lauren knowing you don't even like her and Lauren is just a whole mess both of you go home I'm sick of it'. 'And she still doesn't know he's sh****d Lauren twice this is so dirty someone intervene'; 'I beg Lauren stands up and mentions they sh****d twice Harrison ain't even told Toni yet loool'; Taking to X, formerly Twitter, fans didn't hold back with their comments as they penned: 'Harrison is disgusting you're having sex with Lauren knowing you don't even like her and Lauren is just a whole mess both of you go home I'm sick of it' Toni and Harrison have had a rollercoaster journey since Harrison brought back the bombshell to the main villa after Casa Amor 'had sex with lauren TWICE mind you, now he wants toni back'; 'Harrison wants Toni but he's having sex with Lauren. Toni and Harrison are such weirdos'; 'Harrison asking for a condom and proceeding to have sex in a room full of people ??? Disgusting'; 'How do they feel so comfortable having sex with people in the room?!'; 'Having sex with other people in the room is one thing, but on NATIONAL TV??'; 'Where is Toni sleeping? Cos if Harrison & Lauren are having sex in the same room, the respect is below hell'; 'harrison and lauren are CRAZY bc how are you having sex in a room full of people AND asking for a condom'. Harrison and Toni officially recoupled at the end of the episode, while Lauren was left in tears after she was forced to recouple with Ty. Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
