The Neighborhood Spinoff Is Dead — But Malcolm's Big Move Will Stick in Season 8, Says Cedric the Entertainer

Yahoo06-05-2025
The Butlers and Johnsons just helped Malcolm kickstart a new chapter in a new city — all part of a plan to franchise The Neighborhood and launch a second show starring Sheaun McKinney and Marcel Spears that would follow the OG on Monday nights this fall.
Alas, CBS decided not to proceed with a spinoff… but that doesn't mean Malcolm's big move was for naught.

When The Neighborhood returns with its eighth and final season later this year, the events of Monday's Season 7 finale will not be ignored. Cedric the Entertainer, who co-wrote the backdoor pilot, tells me that future episodes will incorporate some (if not all) of Malcolm's new life in Venice.
'We love the idea that Malcolm has moved there,' the series star/executive producer says. Plus, whether or not there was a spinoff, 'we still wanted to [make] this transition and show the growth of the Fuse Box, which is why we have Marty going back and forth [from Pasadena to Venice in the first of Monday's two episodes].'
Cedric says it represents 'the growth of the show,' as well as the growth of Calvin and Tina's sons, who are finally branching out on their own — something that he and his fellow EPs, co-showrunners Bill Martin and Mike Schiff, would be remiss to walk back now.
'We love the fact that we can have Malcolm going back and forth, a little nervous about living on his own — when people feel, like, 'Oh, this will be great! I've got my own house,' and then they still find themselves at their mama's house! We feel like we've got great stories [to tell] in that space — and, of course, the opportunity to use that [Venice] set from time to time to be able to go tell stories there.'
As for the nixed spinoff's ensemble — which, in addition to McKinney and Spears, would have included Hunter King and Kara Royster as would-be influencers Bellamy and Matisse, Angelique Cabral as Malcolm's literary agent Lisa, and Justin Long as tech titan Bruce — Cedric hints that you might see a couple of those characters again. In addition to Lisa, who would naturally remain in Malcolm's orbit, the EP suggests that there's an easy way to incorporate Bruce into an ongoing storyline.
'We love what Justin brought to the role, so it seems like there could be an opportunity there with [Bruce] becoming interested in what we're doing at the Fuse Box,' Cedric says. Plus, everyone got a kick out of seeing Long play off of former New Girl co-star, Max Greenfield.
'He came in and brought a lot of that neuroticism — that crazy, hyper energy that Max brings [to Dave] — as this tech billionaire guy. He killed it!' the EP exclaims. 'Those two together were hilarious at all times.'
Cedric also spoke with TVLine about a different spinoff, Paramount+'s Crutch (starring Tracy Morgan), which you can read more about here.

Loni Anderson, of WKRP in Cincinnati Fame, Dead at 79

Loni Anderson, who turned heads as the office bombshell on the CBS sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, has died at the age of 79. Anderson passed away Sunday in Los Angeles after 'an acute prolonged illness,' her publicist Cheryl J. Kagan tells The Hollywood Reporter. More from TVLine Danielle Spencer, Dee From What's Happening!!, Dead at 60 Ray Brooks, Mr Benn Narrator and EastEnders Vet, Dead at 86 Jon Miyahara, Superstore's Silent Scene Stealer, Dead at 83 Born and raised in Minnesota, Anderson went to Hollywood and booked guest-star roles on S.W.A.T., Police Woman and Three's Company (where she actually auditioned for the role of Chrissy Snow, later played by Suzanne Somers). Her big break came in 1978, when she won the role of receptionist Jennifer Marlowe on CBS' WKRP in Cincinnati. Jennifer was beautiful, yes, but she had brains, too, using her sex appeal to her full advantage. WKRP in Cincinnati ran for four seasons and earned three Emmy nominations for best comedy series, but a number of time slot changes led to a steep drop in ratings, with CBS deciding to pull the plug in 1982. WKRP became a hit in syndication, though, with repeats earning big viewership throughout the '80s. Anderson herself earned a pair of Emmy nominations for her work on WKRP, and when it ended, she did more film work, including co-starring in 1983's Stroker Ace with Burt Reynolds, whom she later married. Anderson reprised her role as Jennifer in The New WKRP in Cincinnati, a revival that ran in syndication from 1991 to 1993. She also joined the cast of the NBC sitcom Nurses in 1993 and guest-starred on Melrose Place and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. 9-1-1 Promotes Two Series Regulars for Season 9 — Here's Everything We Know About the ABC Drama's Return

9-1-1 doesn't officially return for Season 9 until October, but things are already heating up for the 118. Season 8 marked a major turning point for the ABC procedural, with the death of Captain Bobby Nash (played by Peter Krause) thrusting the firehouse into uncharted, uncertain territory. With the pain of his loss still fresh, along with the myriad changes that follow such an unexpected event, fans are eager to see how the 118 will navigate this strange new world in Season 9. More from TVLine Casting News: Will Trent Ups Kevin Daniels to Regular, Strangers With Candy Reunion and More Rena Sofer Is Leaving Los Angeles - But Is Lois Cerullo Also Leaving General Hospital? Casting News: 9-1-1: Nashville Books Kane Brown, Patrick Dempsey's Fox Drama Adds 2 and More Aside from Krause, however, the show's entire roster of series regulars is expected back for Season 9, including Angela Bassett as Athena Grant, Oliver Stark as Evan 'Buck' Buckley, Aisha Hinds as Hen Wilson, Kenneth Choi as Chimney Han, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Han, Ryan Guzman as Eddie Diaz and Gavin McHugh as Christopher Diaz. (In fact, that's not all!) So, what new drama awaits those familiar faces? Read on for a complete breakdown of everything we know about 9-1-1 Season 9 so far, then drop a comment with your own hopes for the 118's return this fall. 9-1-1 Promotes Corinne Massiah and Elijah M. Cooper to Series Regulars ABC announced via social media on Aug. 13 that Corinne Massiah (aka May Grant) and Elijah M. Cooper (Harry Grant) have been promoted to series regulars for Season 9. Massiah was previously a series regular for Seasons 2 through 6, while this promotion marks Cooper's first time in the position. Marcanthonee Jon Reis, the actor who portrayed Harry before Cooper took over, was also a series regular for Seasons 2 through 6. When Does 9-1-1 Season 9 Premiere? The Season 9 premiere of 9-1-1 will air Thursday, Oct. 9 at 8/7c on ABC. It will be followed by the series premiere of 9-1-1: Nashville at 9 pm, then the Season 22 premiere of Grey's Anatomy at 10 pm. (The premiere was originally set for Oct. 16, but ABC bumped it up a week.) Where Will 9-1-1 Season 9 Film? Ryan Guzman had 9-1-1 fans concerned in May when he posted a farewell story to Instagram, fueling speculation that Eddie's time on the show was coming to an end. 'Well, it officially happened,' Guzman said. 'It's the last day on this lot. Stage 6, I'll miss ya. Seven years. That's crazy.' But this turned out to be much ado about nothing. Guzman was merely saying goodbye to the Fox lot, where 9-1-1 has filmed since it premiered in 2018; the show is relocating to Burbank for Season 9. Production on the show's ninth season officially began in late July. Season 9 Will Introduce the 118's New Captain Following Bobby's untimely demise, the 118 is in serious need of new leadership. Hen was the logical first choice, but when she turned down the promotion, the fandom's collective attention shifted to Chimney, whose inspiring finale speech all but guaranteed him the gig. Athena Is Moving Out… and On? If you were hoping to spend more time in the home that Bobby and Athena built, you're out of luck. Despite initially balking at the idea, Athena ultimately put the house up for sale in the Season 8 finale, leaving curious fans to wonder where she'll be putting down roots next. And could Athena's major life changes also apply to her career? Only time will tell. Is Chimney Going Blonde in Season 9? Sadly, no. While some of the actors' hiatus looks have made their way onto the screen (remember when Eddie got that sick mustache, courtesy of Ryan Guzman?), Kenneth Choi's blonde hair won't be one of them. He posted an Instagram video on July 23, revealing that he's reverted back to classic Chimney mode.
