Health department shuts new Cedric the Entertainer barbecue joint. Will it reopen this weekend?
A new barbecue venture from comedians Anthony Anderson and Cedric the Entertainer is smothering honey-glazed pork ribs with gold sauce and piling smoked brisket onto potato buns with pickles and onions. Or at least it was for six days. AC Barbeque is located in a corner of the Westfield Century City mall's dining hall and held its grand opening May 7 but shut down on Tuesday. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health ordered the celebrities' restaurant to close, citing a lack of permitting. AC Barbeque 'opened without approval or permit,' a representative for the county health department told The Times in an email. A representative for the restaurant told The Times that the city of Los Angeles had approved the restaurant before its opening date, but a county official who visited AC Barbeque during its opening week shut down the operation, noting that its permitting application was incomplete. The AC Barbeque team has since resubmitted the permitting paperwork and hopes to reopen by the end of this weekend. The new joint venture serves as the first bricks-and-mortar extension of longtime friends and barbecue enthusiasts' TV show 'Kings of BBQ.' The A&E series follows the pair as they visit pitmasters across the country and explore the history, flavors and cultural influence on and stemming from the cuisine. Comedy veteran Cedric the Entertainer — whose birth name is Cedric Antonio Kyles — has appeared in 'The Neighborhood,' the 'Original Kings of Comedy' tour and 'Barbershop,' among other shows and films, while Anderson's decades of credits include 'Blackish,' 'Law & Order' and 'We Are Family.' The duo hope to highlight Black culture in their new restaurant, as they do in their show, diving into the community's contributions to barbecue. In the future, they hope to host specials from and appearances by guest pitmasters in Century City. Last year, AC Barbeque debuted a 'virtual dining' outpost within the campus kitchen of Mississippi's Jackson State University, and earlier this year, the brand launched a food truck at Howard University in Washington, D.C. In their Century City restaurant, they're serving sandwiches stuffed with smoked chicken, brisket or pork; smoked-and-fried wings with barbecue ranch; a variety platter; half-racks of St. Louis-style pork ribs; brisket and pulled pork by the pound; banana pudding; sides such as cornbread, mac and cheese, brisket baked beans and more. Read more: Cedric the Entertainer uses his punchlines to branch out and give back To help bring their vision to life, they tapped local pitmaster Burt Bakman of Slab and Trudy's Underground Barbecue. 'Hats off to our chef [Burt Bakman], the driving force behind every smoky bite that comes out of our AC Barbeque kitchen,' the restaurant posted to Instagram last week. Before its temporary closure, AC Barbeque regularly sold out of items; a manager told The Times that even with their smokers firing 24 hours a day, it's still hard to keep up with the demand for the low-and-slow-cooked barbecue. Guests filing in for a taste passed under a sign that says 'Welcome to the cookout,' and TV screens displayed menu items as well as photos of Kyles and Anderson. Behind the counter, rows of the restaurateurs' house spice rubs and bottles of barbecue sauces are available for those who want to bring a taste home. AC Barbeque is located in the Westfield Century City's Dining Terrace, on the second level of the shopping center, at 10250 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles. The restaurant plans to reopen with daily hours of 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sign up for our Tasting Notes newsletter for restaurant reviews, Los Angeles food-related news and more. Why Is ‘S.W.A.T.' Ending After Season 8? Here's Why CBS Canceled The Show Again
Shemar Moore as Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson. Bill Inoshita/Sony Pictures Television/CBS The S.W.A.T. Season 8 finale is airing tonight on CBS, marking the end of the Shemar Moore-led police procedural that's been on the air for eight years. Why is S.W.A.T. ending, and why wasn't the show able to be saved this time around? CBS canceled the crime drama in March 2025, marking another high-profile cancellation for a show that's had ups and downs with the network over the past two years. S.W.A.T. wasn't the only series to get axed: Poppa's House, The Summit, The Neighborhood, FBI: International, and FBI: Most Wanted are also not getting renewed. If S.W.A.T.'s cancellation sounds familiar, that's because in May 2023, after six seasons, CBS initially declined to renew the show for a seventh season. The cancellation quickly drew immense backlash from Moore and fans, who criticized the network for its lack of diversity. 'It makes no sense. We've done nothing wrong. We did everything that was asked for,' Moore said in a video posted to Instagram on May 6, 2023. The actor, who's a CBS vet from The Young and the Restless and Criminal Minds, praised S.W.A.T. as 'the most diverse show on CBS.' Variety later reported that the original decision to cancel S.W.A.T. came down to licensing fees. After Sony and CBS were unable to come to terms in 2023, the show was canceled. However, CBS later worked out a deal for a final seventh season with a reduced episode count. Season 7 eventually premiered in February 2024 after delays caused by the now-resolved Hollywood strikes. In May 2024, CBS surprisingly reversed course again and renewed S.W.A.T. for an eighth season – despite previously announcing that Season 7 would be the last. As the show is preparing to release its anticipated Season 8 finale tonight, the decision to end the series appears to be final. Three weeks before the Season 8 finale, Moore posted a lengthy Instagram video announcing that S.W.A.T. was canceled again and will not return after Season 8. "I wasn't going to do this, but I can't help it," he said in the video. 'S.W.A.T. here we are, Season 8, three weeks away from the finale. We are canceled again. It sucks. It's sad.' He continued, "Thank you for the opportunity. Thank you for the ride. If you change your mind, I promise you, you'll make a lot of people smile," while making one last plea to another streaming site: Netflix. "But if you're done, CBS, I say thank you. Hey, Netflix, how you doing?' According to a report from Deadline, S.W.A.T.'s studio, Sony Pictures Television, was able to propose appealing financial terms to keep the show going, 'sealing eleventh-hour pickups.' However, this time around, sources told the site that 'CBS did not engage in renewal talks' and instead opted 'to end the long-running series outright.' Also, ahead of the cancellation, executive producer and former showrunner Shawn Ryan expressed concern over S.W.A.T.'s fate amid the pending ownership change at CBS. (Skydance Media's $8 billion agreement to merge with Paramount Global was extended to July 7, 2025, as the parties await FCC approval.) 'The show I think is beloved in the executive ranks at CBS, the show is beloved by our audience,' he told Deadline at the time. 'But we also understand that a corporate change is happening in that world. I don't know what the plans are. I don't know what the criteria for renewal is going to be. It seems like it could be much different than years past.' S.W.A.T. executive producer Andrew Dettmann called the news of S.W.A.T.'s cancellation 'heartbreaking.' "It's heartbreaking news, primarily because it's been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we've always been proud of," Dettmann told the outlet. 'They are truly an extraordinary group of people who have all worked so hard and have been so dedicated for all these eight seasons, overcoming countless challenges. I can't give them enough credit.' S.W.A.T. is based on the 1975 television series and the 2003 film of the same name. In addition to Moore, the cast also includes Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, Niko Pepaj, and Annie Ilonzeh. The S.W.A.T. Season 8 finale is airing on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.

Tracy Morgan Comedy Pilot Granted 2025-26 Series Order By NBC
NBC unveiled its fall slate Monday (May 12) and announced that Tracy Morgan's comedy series, The Fall And Rise Of Reggie Dinkins, was greenlit for a 10-episode series order. The series will star Morgan alongside Erika Alexander, Daniel Radcliffe, Bobby Moynihan, Precious Way and Jalyn Hall as it follows Reggie Dinkins (Morgan), a disgraced former football player on a mission to rehabilitate his image. Morgan secured the pilot order back in March and was the first pilot greenlight at NBC for the season, according to the network. The decision came after Pearlena Igbokwe became the Chairman, Television Studios, NBC Entertainment & Peacock Scripted back in January. The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins is Igbokwe's first new NBC scripted series pickup — and the network's only new scripted series for the 2025-26 season so far, Deadline reports. The outlet noted, 'There were multiple factors in play. Because of the timing of the executive restructuring late into the 2024-25 development cycle, NBC was late with its pilot orders, with only 'The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins' finished in time for the upfronts.' The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins will not interfere with The Neighborhood spinoff series Crutch, which Morgan also stars in and is headed to Paramount+. The spinoff centers around Francois 'Frank' Crutchfield (Morgan)— also known as 'Crutch' to his inner circle— 'a Harlem widower whose empty-nest plans are put on hold after his millennial son and free-spirited daughter move back home.' Cedric The Entertainer, who helms The Neighborhood, said of the new series, 'I'm excited to be expanding our 'The Neighborhood' universe by producing a show with the legendary comedian Tracy Morgan. This new character is the close cousin to my character Calvin Butler, and you will enjoy some of their many similarities. Morgan plays Crutch, a 'say-it-like-it-is' widowed father who is challenged when his two adult children and a couple of grandchildren need to move back home, and let's just say there will be several comedic complications.' Morgan added, ''Crutch' will be navigating the ups and downs of having his kids and grandkids back under one roof, and you know if I am doing this, there will be plenty of laughs along the way. I am so happy to be able to do this with my brother Cedric The Entertainer, Owen Smith and the rest of the amazing crew we have put together. Get ready for your new favorite show!' Neither show has a set premiere date. The Neighborhood Spinoff Is Dead — But Malcolm's Big Move Will Stick in Season 8, Says Cedric the Entertainer
The Butlers and Johnsons just helped Malcolm kickstart a new chapter in a new city — all part of a plan to franchise The Neighborhood and launch a second show starring Sheaun McKinney and Marcel Spears that would follow the OG on Monday nights this fall. Alas, CBS decided not to proceed with a spinoff… but that doesn't mean Malcolm's big move was for naught. More from TVLine Cedric the Entertainer Talks Nixed Neighborhood Spinoff, Offers Update on Tracy Morgan Offshoot Crutch The Neighborhood Spinoff Not Moving Forward at CBS New Squid Game Season 3 Teaser Reveals Gi-hun in a Coffin, More Creepy VIPs and... a Baby's Cry When The Neighborhood returns with its eighth and final season later this year, the events of Monday's Season 7 finale will not be ignored. Cedric the Entertainer, who co-wrote the backdoor pilot, tells me that future episodes will incorporate some (if not all) of Malcolm's new life in Venice. 'We love the idea that Malcolm has moved there,' the series star/executive producer says. Plus, whether or not there was a spinoff, 'we still wanted to [make] this transition and show the growth of the Fuse Box, which is why we have Marty going back and forth [from Pasadena to Venice in the first of Monday's two episodes].' Cedric says it represents 'the growth of the show,' as well as the growth of Calvin and Tina's sons, who are finally branching out on their own — something that he and his fellow EPs, co-showrunners Bill Martin and Mike Schiff, would be remiss to walk back now. 'We love the fact that we can have Malcolm going back and forth, a little nervous about living on his own — when people feel, like, 'Oh, this will be great! I've got my own house,' and then they still find themselves at their mama's house! We feel like we've got great stories [to tell] in that space — and, of course, the opportunity to use that [Venice] set from time to time to be able to go tell stories there.' As for the nixed spinoff's ensemble — which, in addition to McKinney and Spears, would have included Hunter King and Kara Royster as would-be influencers Bellamy and Matisse, Angelique Cabral as Malcolm's literary agent Lisa, and Justin Long as tech titan Bruce — Cedric hints that you might see a couple of those characters again. In addition to Lisa, who would naturally remain in Malcolm's orbit, the EP suggests that there's an easy way to incorporate Bruce into an ongoing storyline. 'We love what Justin brought to the role, so it seems like there could be an opportunity there with [Bruce] becoming interested in what we're doing at the Fuse Box,' Cedric says. Plus, everyone got a kick out of seeing Long play off of former New Girl co-star, Max Greenfield. 'He came in and brought a lot of that neuroticism — that crazy, hyper energy that Max brings [to Dave] — as this tech billionaire guy. He killed it!' the EP exclaims. 'Those two together were hilarious at all times.' Cedric also spoke with TVLine about a different spinoff, Paramount+'s Crutch (starring Tracy Morgan), which you can read more about here.
