Arkansas SS Wehiwa Aloy wins Golden Spikes Award as top amateur player in the nation
CARY, N.C. (AP) — Arkansas shortstop Wehiwa Aloy won the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur baseball player in the nation, USA Baseball announced Saturday.
Aloy is the third Arkansas player to take home the prize, joining Andrew Benintendi in 2015 and Kevin Kopps in 2021, and the 12th winner from the Southeastern Conference — most of any league.
Aloy, the SEC player of the year, started all 65 games this season and led the Razorbacks in almost every major offensive cateogy, including slugging percentage (.673), OPS (1.107), hits (93), doubles (19) and home runs (21). He was second on the team with a .350 batting average and 68 RBIs.
He made just five errors in 229 total chances (.978) and helped turn 31 double plays.
Aloy was named an All-American by four major publications and finished the season with a run to the College World Series semifinals. He batted .324 with eight runs, 10 RBIs and five extra-base hits in nine NCAA Tournament games.
Of the 46 previous Golden Spikes winners, six have earned Rookie of the Year honors in the major leagues, three have won the Cy Young Award, three were selected league MVP and 11 have won at least one World Series championship as a player or manager. Twenty-three previous winners have also been named to at least one All-Star Game roster as a player or manager.

MIAMI (AP) — Kyle Stowers ended a 31-game home run drought, Sandy Alcántara pitched six strong innings and the Miami Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves 5-3 on Sunday in the rubber game of their three-game series. Otto López had two hits and drove in two runs, and Xavier Edwards singled twice, doubled and had an RBI for the Marlins. Alcántara (4-8) allowed three runs and six hits, walked two and struck out four. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner has completed six innings in three of his last four starts. Anthony Bender tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Alcántara, Calvin Faucher got the last two outs in the eighth and Ronny Henriquez pitched the ninth for his second save. López and Dane Myers hit run-scoring singles off Braves starter Bryce Elder in the fifth to put the Marlins ahead 4-2. Elder (2-4) allowed five runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Braves struck quickly against Alcántara on Austin Riley's RBI single in the first. But Stowers tied it at 1 with a solo homer in the second. It was Stowers' 11th homer of the season and first since he went deep twice against the Chicago Cubs on May 14. Atlanta retook the lead on Drake Baldwin's run-scoring single in the third before Miami tied it again when López hit an RBI single in the bottom half. Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas has been hospitalized and will not return to training, family says
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Hall of Fame horse racing trainer D. Wayne Lukas has been hospitalized and will not return to training, Churchill Downs announced Sunday after speaking with members of his family. Lukas' family said the 89-year-old has battled a severe infection that has worsened and that he has declined an aggressive treatment plan to instead return home. His horses have been transferred to assistant trainer Sebastian 'Bas' Nicholl. 'Wayne built a legacy that will never be matched,' Nicholl said. 'Every decision I make, every horse I saddle, I'll hear his voice in the back of my mind. This isn't about filling his shoes — no one can. It's about honoring everything that he's built.' Lukas is one of the most accomplished people in the history of the sport. His 15 Triple Crown victories are second only to good friend Bob Baffert, and Lukas has a record-tying 20 in the Breeders Cup. He won the Kentucky Derby four times since 1988. His most recent victory in the Triple Crown came last year with Seize the Grey in the Preakness, his seventh — one short of Baffert's record. 'Wayne is one of the greatest competitors and most important figures in Thoroughbred racing history,' Churchill Downs president Mike Anderson said. 'He transcended the sport of horse racing and took the industry to new levels.
