Arkansas SS Wehiwa Aloy wins Golden Spikes Award as top amateur player in the nation
Aloy is the third Arkansas player to take home the prize, joining Andrew Benintendi in 2015 and Kevin Kopps in 2021, and the 12th winner from the Southeastern Conference — most of any league.
Aloy, the SEC player of the year, started all 65 games this season and led the Razorbacks in almost every major offensive cateogy, including slugging percentage (.673), OPS (1.107), hits (93), doubles (19) and home runs (21). He was second on the team with a .350 batting average and 68 RBIs.
He made just five errors in 229 total chances (.978) and helped turn 31 double plays.
Aloy was named an All-American by four major publications and finished the season with a run to the College World Series semifinals. He batted .324 with eight runs, 10 RBIs and five extra-base hits in nine NCAA Tournament games.
Of the 46 previous Golden Spikes winners, six have earned Rookie of the Year honors in the major leagues, three have won the Cy Young Award, three were selected league MVP and 11 have won at least one World Series championship as a player or manager. Twenty-three previous winners have also been named to at least one All-Star Game roster as a player or manager.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to terms with forward Frank Nazar on a seven-year extension worth $46.13 million. The team announced the contract Thursday. Nazar will count $6.59 million against the salary cap from when it starts in the 2026-27 NHL season through 2033. Nazar had 26 points in 53 games last season at ages 20 and 21. He helped the U.S. win the world hockey championship for the first time since 1933 and was invited to the Olympic orientation camp later this month as a candidate to play in Milan. 'He drives play using his elite speed and playmaking abilities, creating problems for opponents and opportunities for teammates every night. Frank is an integral piece of our team, and we're thrilled to have him with us for the next eight seasons.' WASHINGTON (AP) — Jeff McNeil has a sore right shoulder, the latest nagging injury for the New York Mets as they try to recover from a late-summer swoon. McNeil was out of the lineup for Thursday's series finale at Washington, with Brett Baty starting at second base. One of the Mets' most consistent hitters, McNeil went 4 for 8 with a homer, two doubles and five RBIs in the previous two games against the Nationals. 'It doesn't bother him to swing the bat. It's just more the throwing,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. The shoulder problem began late last week, Mendoza said, which is why McNeil started at designated hitter on Saturday and Sunday. Brandon Nimmo was also out of the lineup Thursday with the stiff neck that forced him to leave Wednesday night's game in the second inning. Tyrone Taylor started in left field. 'We didn't see much improvement overnight,' Mendoza said of Nimmo. McNeil has experience in left, but the shoulder problem means he's not an option there for now. New York's series at Washington began Tuesday with the news that catcher Francisco Alvarez has a sprained ligament in his right thumb that will require surgery. Alvarez is hoping he can play through the pain after a stint on the injured list. Backup catcher Luis Torrens had a rough night Wednesday that included getting hit in his receiving hand by a bat on a catcher's interference play, but Mendoza said Thursday that Torrens was 'fine.' The Mets had a three-game winning streak before Wednesday night's loss, but the team with the biggest payroll in the majors is just 5-15 since July 28. New York entered Thursday trailing Philadelphia by 6 1/2 games in the NL East and was one game ahead of Cincinnati for the final wild-card spot. ___

Hojgaard tied for 12th after first round of British Masters in bid to get into Ryder Cup team
BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Rasmus Hojgaard shot a 3-under 69 in the first round of the British Masters on Thursday as the Danish golfer started his bid to clinch an automatic place on Europe's team for the Ryder Cup. Hojgaard needs to finish in a two-way tie for 29th or better in the tournament being held at The Belfry to earn enough points to overtake Shane Lowry, who is clinging onto sixth place in the list of automatic qualifiers. Hojgaard is currently in a tie with five other players — including his twin brother, Nicolai — for 12th place, three shots off the lead shared by Marcel Siem, Li Haotong, Matthias Schwab and Thomas Aiken. The top six get into the European team automatically. Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, Robert MacIntyre and Tyrrell Hatton are already guaranteed to be at next month's matches at Bethpage Black. Lowry is not competing in the British Masters. Luke Donald will announce his six captain's picks to complete the 12-man team on Sept. 1. ___
