DK Shivakumar admits ₹25 lakh donation to National Herald. ‘It's our party's newspaper,' he says
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday confirmed that he donated ₹25 lakh to the National Herald newspaper, which is under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an ongoing investigation involving top Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

'Yes, I have donated ₹25 lakh to National Herald newspaper. Even my brother DK Suresh had donated to it. The newspaper is run by our party, hence we donated to it. We donated from our hard-earned money — there is nothing wrong in it,' Shivakumar told reporters in Bengaluru.
According to reports, the ED has not officially named Shivakumar as an accused yet, but his statement was recorded during the probe. He has maintained that he acted on the directions of former AICC treasurer Pawan Bansal and was not aware of the operational details of Young Indian, the company under investigation.
The probe also draws in Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who is alleged to have influenced or instructed multiple individuals to donate to Young Indian. ED sources have reportedly identified around ₹80 lakh in donations made under his direction.The donations are now being scrutinized to determine whether they were genuine political contributions or part of a financial arrangement potentially involving money laundering.

In a significant move earlier this week, the ED issued fresh summons to multiple donors linked to the case, including those believed to have contributed under the influence of senior Congress leaders. The agency has also requested financial records from Young Indian for the last ten years to assess discrepancies between declared donations and actual fund movements.

Salt Lake woman loses 8.8L in digi-arrest fraud
1 2 Kolkata: A 63-year-old woman from Salt Lake fell victim to digital-arrest fraud in which she received WhatsApp video extortion calls in the name of Mumbai Police and the ED, losing Rs 8.8 lakh. She then continued to suffer from identity theft and psychological manipulation, where the scammers contacted her relatives on WhatsApp video calls, recorded their faces and forwarded them on WhatsApp groups. "The victim's contacts received unexpected video calls through WhatsApp. The scammers recorded their faces during these calls and subsequently circulated the images in various WhatsApp groups, creating panic among her social circle," said a senior officer quoting the complaint. According to the FIR, the perpetrators first contacted the victim on May 28, posing as CBI and ED officials from Mumbai. They claimed that an arrest warrant was issued against her for alleged money-laundering activities. "I received repeated calls and a WhatsApp video call from someone posing as a crime branch officer from Mumbai. During the call, he asked if my Aadhaar card was lost and whether copies were submitted in Mumbai. A person in a police uniform with an official-looking background appeared and demanded I isolate myself, citing sensitive charges. I was coerced to remain on the call and misled into believing that there were multiple criminal cases filed against me, including a shoot-at-sight order on my family, causing me extreme distress and fear," said the victim. Banerjee was coerced into transferring money thrice — Rs 2.2 lakh to a private bank in Varanasi, Rs 3.5 lakh to an account in Bangalore, and Rs 3.1 lakh to an account in Pune. The situation escalated on June 3 when the criminals hacked the victim's WhatsApp account and began targeting her contacts. "This is a new modus operandi where scammers combine financial fraud with social engineering and identity theft," explained an officer. The fraud came to light when a family friend visited the victim and found her still on call with the fraudsters. The criminals immediately disconnected upon hearing his voice.

Man held for defrauding woman of Rs 60 lakh with fake notes
Hubballi: A man was arrested for defrauding a woman from Pune of Rs 60 lakh on the promise of supporting her to start a Rs 50 crore construction company. Vidyanagar police apprehended Mohammed Asif from in Murudeshwar, Uttara Kannada district for defrauding Ashwini from Pune. Asif, who introduced himself as Sudhir Mehta, met Ashwini in Mysuru. She sought financial support to establish a Rs 50 crore construction company in her daughter's name. Asif invited her to Hubballi and collected Rs 60 lakh as advance fees. As a first instalment, he gave Rs 2 crore in cash in two bags. But except Rs 5,000 in genuine currency, the rest were all fake notes. On Monday, a complaint was filed at Vidyanagar police station regarding the counterfeit currency fraud. Police commissioner N Shashikumar said the accused provided Ashwini with fake notes readily available in bookshops. Initial enquiries indicate these notes were produced at a printing facility in Tamil Nadu. The authorities are working to recover the money taken from the victim. The commissioner described the accused as a well-dressed individual in formal attire who speaks fluent Kannada and Hindi. He would present false identification and use aliases when meeting potential victims. To avoid detection, he would discard his mobile number after each fraudulent transaction, maintaining a separate phone for this purpose.
