Karnataka govt. withdraws MoS rank to Sahitya Parishat president Mahesh Joshi

The State government has on Saturday withdrawn the Minister of State rank and all the facilities applicable to that rank to Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) president Mahesh Joshi. Shortly after Mr. Joshi was elected president of the Parishat, the then Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government led by Basavaraj Bommai had accorded MoS rank to him. This move was criticised by many writers then. This was the first time a KSP president was given a MoS rank. Reacting sharply to the government revoking the MoS rank to KSP president, Mr. Joshi said that the Parishat was working as a voice of Kannada and thereby withdrawing this honour to its president was an insult to Kannadigas. 'This will create a problem in the cordial relationship between the KSP and the government,' he added. He further said he had not asked for a MoS rank to be given, but the government accorded this honour following a letter by former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda to then Chief Minister Mr. Bommai.

Kamal Haasan's effigy burnt in Bengaluru, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce threatens Thug Life release

Kamal Haasan's comment on the root of Kannada language has ignited a huge controversy. Associations like Kannada Rakshana Vedike and various politicians have demanded a public apology and threatened to ban the release of his upcoming film Thug Life in Karnataka. Videos of members of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike burning Kamal's effigy and posters in different parts of the state have also surfaced online. The controversy got even bigger when Kamal, at another event, refused to issue an apology and said, 'Love will never apologise. I will apologise only if I am wrong, if not, I will not.' #Bengaluru #Karnataka #kannadalanguage #Thuglife #KamalHaasan #Kannada — K MURALI KUMAR (@photomurali1) May 30, 2025 Kamal Haasan's 'no apology' statement irked minister Shivaraj Tangadagi as he immediately wrote to KFCC (Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce). In his letter, the minister wrote, 'If Tamil film actor Kamal Haasan does not apologise to the people of the state/Kannadigas, the films in which he has acted should be immediately banned in Karnataka.' While speaking to ANI, KFCC president M Narasimhalu said that people in Karnataka are upset with the veteran actor for his comment. He said, 'People of Karnataka are angry with Kamal Haasan. We have also sent a message to the South Film Chamber. The distributors have decided that if he does not apologise before the release of his film on the 5th, it will not be allowed to release here'. The backlash also extended to Kannada actor Shiva Rajkumar as he was also present at the event. At another event he said, 'I am a huge fan of Kamal sir. People may ask why should I admire someone else when I have my own father (Dr Rajkumar) to look up to. My father is family while I have great respect for Kamal sir. I am inspired by him. Kamal sir knows what he has said, and he will give an appropriate response.' Shiva Rajkumar's statement angered many of his fans, who reached outside his home in protest. She told NDTV, 'I think Kamal sir has made a factually incorrect statement. Kannada is not derived from Tamil. All South languages come under the same umbrella. Nobody is superior. But, having said that it is bit much boycotting his film. We are all adults and should engage in constructive conversation. We as South Indians have a bigger problem to deal with. We need to battle the Hindi imposition.' She added, 'Kamal sir should just say sorry and move on. However, I am against the ban. You can't force anyone to apologise.' Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, is slated for a theatrical release on June 5.

Responding to questions from MPs about US President Donald Trump's recurring remarks on ceasefire, Jaishankar insisted that there was 'no interference' by the United States in the ceasefire decision, which was taken after talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) on a request from the Pakistan Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy joined in to question Prime Minister Narendra Modi on why the government ended military operations against Pakistan half-way and failed to seek all-party opinion before declaring a pressure on the Modi government, Trinamool Congress, RJD, Samajwadi Party, CPI(M) and CPI have joined in to demand a Special Session of Parliament on the Pahalgam terror attack and India's Operation Sindoor. However, NITI Aayog member Arvind Virmani has clarified that India would overtake Japan by the end of 2025 to become the fourth-largest in the theatrical statements, Amit Shah said, 'Under Modi's leadership, Operation Sindoor was undertaken. We have shown (to the world) the importance of 'ek chutki sindoor'.'Modi is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping at Rio de Janeiro in early July. DOGE will live on without Musk, the administration said. 'Elon is terrific,' Trump said, praising the billionaire. "This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way."In a setback to Trump's tariff wars, a panel of federal judges blocked him from imposing some of his steepest tariffs on China and other US trading partners. Kamal Haasan's films will be banned in Karnataka if he does not apologise: Kannada and Culture Minister

Kannada and Culture Minister of Karnataka, Shivaraj Tangadagi, said on Friday that actor Kamal Haasan's films will be "banned" in the state, as decided by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), if he does not apologise for his remarks about the Kannada language. Meanwhile, KFCC president M Narasimhalu said exhibitors and distributors themselves have voluntarily decided not to screen his movie if he doesn't apologise. KFCC on Thursday said that it will not allow the release of Kamal Haasan's film Thug Life in Karnataka unless he issues a public apology by May 30 for his controversial remarks about the Kannada language. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan's recent statement claiming that "Kannada was born out of Tamil" during a promotional event for his upcoming film has sparked widespread outrage among pro-Kannada groups and cultural organisations. 'I have written a letter. After that, the film chamber of commerce has also taken a good decision and held a press meet saying that if he doesn't apologise in two days his film will be banned. I extend my compliments to the film chamber of commerce as the Minister for Kannada and Culture,' Tangadagi said. Speaking to reporters here, he said that irrespective of how big the person is, who has spoken against -- Kannada, Kannadigas and Karnataka's land and water -- it will not be tolerated. Kamal Haasan has to apologise, if not as decided by the film chamber of commerce, his films will be banned. "We will not allow it, if he doesn't apologise. He should apologise. Any light comment against Kannada will not be tolerated. If he doesn't apologise, we will take our decision," he added. Asked if his films will be banned in case an apology doesn't come, Tangadagi responded, 'Yes'. Responding to a question on actor Shivarajkumar's response to the controversy, the minister said he has asked the Kannada star to talk about it with Kamal Haasan.
