MCE Condemns Terrorist Attack on Catholic Church in Congo

Mohamed Mandour
The Muslim Council of Elders, chaired by Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, on Monday strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attack on a Catholic church in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which left several civilians dead and many others wounded.
In an official statement, the Council denounced the assault as a "heinous and cowardly act" and described the targeting of places of worship as a 'horrific crime that contradicts the teachings of all religions and violates universal human, moral, and spiritual values.'
The Council extended its heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Congo, as well as to the families of the victims, offering prayers for the recovery of those injured and for strength and solace to the bereaved.
'This attack is a painful reminder of the urgent need for global unity against terrorism in all its forms,' the statement added.
The incident marks another tragic blow to the ongoing struggle for peace and security in the central African nation.

Portugal & Spain Declare State of Emergency due to Intensive Heatwave

Rana Atef Portugal declared a state of emergency from Sunday to Thursday due to an intense heatwave threatening to spark widespread wildfires across the country, according to Minister of Internal Administration Maria Lucia Amaral. Authorities predict that temperatures will range between 36 and 44°C, with a significant drop in humidity levels, which increases the risk of fires in rural areas and forests. The extraordinary measures imposed by the Portuguese government include: A ban on entering or staying in forested areas. A prohibition on lighting fires or carrying out any burning activities. A ban on the use of heavy machinery in rural areas. A suspension of all permits related to fireworks or incendiary materials. These measures coincide with similar preparations in Spain, which is also facing a heatwave that may lead to wildfires in some of the southern and western regions of the country. Europe is experiencing an unprecedented and catastrophic summer in terms of the intensity of forest fires. High temperatures and drought conditions have sparked thousands of fires that have ravaged vast areas of land. According to the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, record levels of greenhouse gas emissions have been recorded that have not been seen in over two decades. According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), by the end of July, over 292,000 hectares in EU countries had been consumed by fires—more than double the amount burned in the same period last year, surpassing the average for the past 19 years. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Global Events Mark Marine Protected Areas Day 2025

Ahmed Emam Countries worldwide observed "Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Day" on August 1, 2025, with a coordinated series of events aimed at highlighting the importance of marine conservation, according to TV BRICS. Now in its fifth year, the initiative is supported by more than 90 partner organisations, with over 80 activities scheduled across 25 countries. South Africa, where MPA Day originated, is hosting a significant share of the events. Activities range from beach clean-ups, guided coastal walks, and marine biodiversity tours to research and monitoring projects, art exhibitions, documentary screenings, and virtual sessions. Many events are designed to give participants direct interaction with marine environments while promoting awareness of ocean health. Youth engagement is a key focus for 2025, with hands-on workshops and educational programs aimed at fostering a deeper connection between young people and the ocean. Scientists and conservationists are also taking part, conducting field research and encouraging public involvement in citizen science projects. Organisers say the day not only celebrates the biodiversity of marine protected areas but also calls attention to the urgent need for their preservation amid global environmental challenges. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Armed resistance 'will not be abandoned' until Palestinian state is established: Hamas - War on Gaza

Hamas said on Saturday it would not relinquish its weapons before the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, rejecting recent comments by US envoy Steve Witkoff suggesting the group might be willing to disarm. In a statement, the group said: 'Resistance and its tools are a legitimate national right as long as the occupation continues — a right recognized by international law and conventions.' 'Resistance and its arms cannot be abandoned except upon the full restoration of our national rights — first and foremost, the establishment of an independent, fully sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital,' it added. The remarks came in response to Witkoff, the US Special Envoy to the Middle East, who said during a visit to Tel Aviv on Saturday that 'Hamas is willing to disarm, but we need to ensure they follow through.' 'Several Arab governments are now pressing Hamas to disarm, so we're very close to a solution that could end the war in Gaza,' Witkoff added. Founded in the late 1980s during the first intifada, the Islamist Resistance Movement (Hamas) is a political organization with an armed wing, Ezzeddin Al-Qassam Brigades, to resist the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land. Hamas' statement also follows growing international outrage over mounting famine conditions in Gaza amid an all-out Israeli blockade on the strip since 2 March. In recent days, several Western countries — including France, the UK, Canada and Malta — have announced plans to recognize Palestinian statehood at the upcoming United Nations (UN) General Assembly session in September. War and resistance On 7 October 2023, Hamas fighters launched a large-scale attack on Israeli military bases and settlements near the then-under-17-year-long siege strip, killing and wounding hundreds of soldiers and settlers, and capturing 250 people. The ensuing Israeli genocidal war on the strip has since killed at least 60,400 Palestinians and injured over 150,000 others, per the Palestinian health ministry. The majority of those killed have been women and children. Over the past 22 months, Israeli airstrikes and ground operations have displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza, estimated at 2.3 million, and devastated homes, schools, hospitals, and essential infrastructure. The military wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad — Al-Qassam Brigades and the Al-Quds Brigades, respectively — have led the armed resistance against Israeli forces on the ground in Gaza, engaging in guerrilla warfare against Israeli occupation soldiers, killing and injuring hundreds of Israeli soldiers and destroying a large number of tanks and armed personnel carriers. Since the start of the war, Egypt, Qatar, and the United States have mediated talks to reach a ceasefire and prisoner swap deals. On 18 March, Israel unilaterally ruptured a temporary truce brokered in late January to resume the genocide, unimpeded. Since 2 March, Israel's deadly blockade on the Gaza Strip, imposed intermittently since the start of the war and tightened to a near-total closure, has driven the territory into famine. Under international pressure, Israel was recently forced to open some border crossings and allow the entry of minimal amounts of aid into the strip. Two weeks ago, the US and Israel withdrew from the latest round of negotiations, claiming that Hamas was not negotiating in "good faith." Hamas retaliated by stressing that it has displayed the utmost flexibility in negotiations but could not compromise on a deal that would entail the complete withdrawal of the Israeli army from Gaza and a permanent end to the war. Still, officials from Egypt, Qatar, and the US have since confirmed that indirect talks between Israel and Hamas are ongoing in Doha to reach a ceasefire deal.
