Fight Against Drugs: Revanth asks schools, colleges to be vigilant
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday warned educational institutions that cases would be booked against them if drugs were found in their premises.
The CM announced that the state's Anti-Narcotics Bureau would henceforth be known as Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) and was tasked with curbing the menace of narcotics in the state.
Speaking at an event marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2025 at Shilpakala Vedika here, Reddy placed an onus on educational institutions to ensure their campuses were free of drugs. 'It is the responsibility of school and college managements which take lakhs of rupees from parents, to monitor students. Parents entrust the responsibility of their children to them. Hence, they can't act irresponsibly while accepting huge fees from parents. I order DGP and anti-narcotics officials that cases be booked against the managements of educational institutes if drugs were found in their premises,' he said.
The Chief Minister also suggested that educational institutions should engage professional child psychologists to monitor 'behavioral changes' among students. Since children spend most of their time in educational institutions, the school and college authorities should keep a tab on them, he said. He also urged students to immediately report to authorities in case they find drugs in the premises of their schools or colleges.
He instructed the Chief Secretary and other senior officials to hold meetings with the managements of schools and colleges to reinforce their responsibilities. Telangana, known for people's struggles, cannot become a hub of narcotics, he added.
While launching EAGLE, the renamed version of Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB), on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that EAGLE would ensure that Telangana would become a drugs-free state. 'The EAGLE will keep a close eye on the movement of cannabis and drugs in the state. For a drug-free Telangana, I want everyone to work together with the government. We can control drugs only if we all are vigilant,' he said.
Telugu film actors Ram Charan and Vijay Devarakonda, badminton chief national coach Pullela Gopichand, state DGP Jitender and others attended the event.
Praising Ram Charan and Vijay Devarakonda for their hard work and dedication in the film industry, the Chief Minister said youth should be inspired by the real-life story of the actors and not the roles they play in films. Ram Charan, who also spoke at the event, appealed to the audience, largely comprising youth, to work hard and lead a life of happiness and not fall prey to narcotics.

Chennai: Nigerian woman arrested for smuggling cocaine
A Nigerian woman who was part of a cocaine peddling network in Chennai city was arrested by Choolaimedu Police. The Anti-Narcotic Intelligence Unit (ANIU) and Greater Chennai Police have been making a series of arrests and seizure of drugs for the last 10 months and Tamil actors Srikanth and Krishna were also arrested this week. Following a tip-off on drug trafficking, the Choolaimedu Police arrested Fayas Ahamed (31) of Royapettah and S. Chandrasekar (25) of Koyambedu on January 21. Based on their confessions, 14 persons who were part of the cartel were nabbed subsequently. Further investigation led to the arrest of total 24 persons including two Nigerian nationals, one from Bengaluru and another from Mumbai, besides the suspects in Chennai. After analysing call records and bank transactions, police found a woman was also part of the network. On Thursday (June 26, 2025), a special team was sent to Bengaluru that arrested the suspect who has been identified as Sarah Kumama alias Happiness alias Blessings (41), a Nigerian national. She was brought to Chennai and remanded to judicial custody. Police seized two mobile phones from her.

Andhra Woman Dies As Electric Scooter Battery Explodes During Charging
A woman was killed when the battery of an electric two-wheeler that was being charged exploded in their house in Andhra Pradesh's YSR Kadapa district on Friday. The incident occurred in Potladurthi village of Yerraguntla mandal (block) of Kadapa district on Friday. The scooter, which was kept on charging, exploded, resulting in the death of a woman who was asleep on a sofa near the two-wheeler. The woman identified as Venkata Lakshmamma (62) suffered burn injuries and died on the spot. The vehicle caught fire with the explosion and was completely gutted. Some household items were partially burnt in the fire. Police registered a case and took up an investigation. The body of the deceased was shifted to government hospital at Produttur for autopsy. Similar incidents were reported in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in recent years. During 2022, the Telugu states witnessed about eight incidents of e-bikes, houses and even e-bike showrooms and a hotel catching fire due to e-batteries exploding, killing 10 people and injuring many others. Almost all the incidents took place when e-bikes were kept on charge and it is suspected that overcharging triggered the explosions. The biggest disaster happened in Hyderabad in September 2022 when eight people lost their lives after a fire broke out in an e-bike showroom in the cellar of a multi-storeyed building and spread to a hotel on the upper floors. The fire was caused by a short circuit which was triggered due to overcharging of the EVs. In October 2022, as many as 36 electric bikes were gutted in a huge fire in a showroom in Palakonda town of Andhra Pradesh's Parvathipuram district. In November 2024, a fire broke out after the battery of an electric scooter exploded in Jagital district. A person, who had purchased the two-wheeler three months ago, had put the scooter for charging in his house. In April 2022, a man was killed and his three family members were injured when a battery of a scooty exploded at their house in Vijayawada. Kotakonda Shiva Kumar (40) was killed and his wife and their two children sustained burn injuries when the scooty, kept on charging, exploded. The incident had occurred just a day after the man purchased the electric scooter. The same month, an 80-year-old man was killed and two others injured in Telangana's Nizamabad district when the battery of electric two-wheeler had exploded. The incident occurred in a house where the battery was being charged.

‘Manjummel Boys' fraud case: Soubin Shahir and co-producers granted anticipatory bail by Kerala High Court
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) The Kerala High Court on Thursday (June 26) granted actor-director Soubin Shahir , his father Babu Shahir, and co-producer Shaun Antony, anticipatory bail in the financial fraud case related to the hit Malayalam film 'Manjummel Boys'. According to the Bar Bench website, the court ruled that custodial interrogation was not necessary at this stage and directed the accused to appear before the investigation team on July 7. Reportedly, the court also instructed that if any of the accused are taken into custody, they should be immediately released on bail. The decision comes after an earlier plea by the trio to quash the case was rejected by the court, prompting them to file for anticipatory bail. However, he claimed that despite receiving the money, the producers failed to deliver on the agreement. This led to what he described as a breach of trust and financial cheating. Following the complaint, the Maradu Police began an investigation as per the High Court's directive and submitted a report stating that the accused had conspired to defraud the complainant. According to police, while a sum of Rs 5.99 crore was later returned to the complainant, they still found sufficient grounds to register a case. Should not be treated like a standard criminal case Reportedly, the High Court, while granting bail, noted that the dispute appeared to be of a civil and commercial nature, and should not be treated like a standard criminal case. It also acknowledged that the accused had already responded to earlier summons and extended them protection from arrest until June 27.
