Hyderabad: Two held in ganja racket; 26 medicos among 84 consumers identified
Hyderabad, Aug 7 (PTI) The Telangana government's anti-narcotics task force has arrested two ganja suppliers, including a woman interstate drug peddler, for allegedly selling cannabis to over 80 consumers, among them 26 medical students of a private medical college near Hyderabad, officials said on Thursday. Acting on credible information, officials from the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) apprehended a 23-year-old man on August 1 and seized 2 kg of ganja from his possession, a release said. Investigation revealed that the accused had been procuring cannabis in bulk from a woman supplier based in Bidar district, Karnataka, for local distribution in Hyderabad. Between August 2024 and August 2025, he transferred Rs 6 lakh to her for procurement, officials said. The woman, an interstate drug supplier, was arrested on August 5 with 4 kg of ganja in her possession. Investigators said she has been involved in drug trafficking since 2010, primarily sourcing ganja from Parli in Maharashtra and local suppliers in Bidar. Payments were received through online apps and cash, the release added. Authorities also found suspicious bank transactions worth Rs 1.5 crore in her accounts. Of this, Rs 26 lakh was traced to 51 identified peddlers in Hyderabad, while the remaining Rs 1.24 crore is under scrutiny. Based on the duo's confession, officials identified 84 consumers, including 26 students from a private medical college. Tests confirmed ganja consumption in eight of the medicos, who were subsequently sent for counselling in the presence of their parents and the college principal. They have been admitted to a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre, the release further said. In major drug bust, cops seize 847 kg ganja worth Rs 4.2 cr, arrest two
Hyderabad: In a meticulously coordinated joint operation, the Cyberabad Narcotic Police Station of the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) and the RNCC Khammam team have dismantled a major inter-state ganja trafficking network. The bust resulted in the seizure of 847 kilograms of high-grade ganja, with a street value of over Rs 4.2 crore, and the arrest of two habitual offenders. The operation is one of the largest and most precise anti-drug actions of 2025, targeting a supply corridor that runs from Malkangiri in Odisha to Uttar Pradesh via Telangana and Karnataka. According to police, on 4 August, intelligence reached the EAGLE CNPS and RNCC Khammam teams about a Uttar Pradesh-registered Mahindra Bolero pick-up truck carrying a massive ganja consignment from Odisha. The vehicle was expected to pass through Thondapalli village in Shamshabad, on the Bangalore National Highway, between 3pm and 6pm. By 1pm, a joint RNCC–CNPS team had been deployed with surveillance vehicles, weighing equipment, packing materials, and documentation tools. At 5pm, the suspect vehicle was intercepted near the Jama Masjid on Shamshabad Road. Two individuals were arrested and identified as Khilla Dhana (29) and Rajendar (26), both residents of Malkangiri district, Odisha. During the investigation, a tightly knit trafficking chain was exposed. An absconding individual, Ramesh Sukri, operated as the central coordinator from Malkangiri, linked to both Dhana and Rajendar through their village network. His associate, Jagadish Kuldeep, procured bulk ganja from cultivators like Shibo Shiba and Basu in remote forest areas. The syndicate's main buyer, ShaffiqShafi from Uttar Pradesh, placed large-volume orders and provided advance vehicles with UP registration, while handling payments through couriers or layered transfers to obscure the trail.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It was the second biggest drug bust this year as the EAGLE team had seized 935 kg ganja at Batasingaram fruit market on July 26. Acting on specific intelligence that peddlers were transporting a huge consignment of ganja in an Uttar Pradesh-registered Mahindra Bolero vehicle from Odisha, the EAGLE team kept a watch at Shamshabad on Monday evening. At 5pm, they intercepted the pickup vehicle near a place of worship in Thondapalli, Shamshabad. The vehicle driver, Khilla Dhana, 29, and co-driver, Rajendar Bajing, 26, both residents of Malkangiri district in Odisha, were arrested. Police seized 26 sacks, containing 411 brown duct-taped packets of 847 kilos of ganja in the cargo bay of the Bolero. 'Both the accused are repeat offenders. Dhana was arrested in 2019 by the Donkarayi police of East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh for peddling 20 kg of ganja, and he is currently out on bail in that case. This year, he transported 1,450 kilos of ganja from Odisha to Uttar Pradesh in three shipments. Bajing was arrested in 2023 by the Narsipatnam police for peddling 150 kg ganja, and he is also currently out on bail in that case. They drive through rural routes to evade checkpoints,' EAGLE superintendent of police (SP) Ch Roopesh said. According to police, the duo has been working for the absconding kingpin, Ramesh Sukri, of Malkangiri, who coordinates with ganja supplies from forest cultivators in Malkangiri, and hands over loads to Uttar Pradesh buyer Shafiq, who also provides pickup vehicles with UP registration numbers to transport the contraband. 847 kg of ganja worth ₹4.2 crore seized in Telangana; 2 held
Hyderabad, The Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement on Tuesday said it has dismantled a major interstate ganja trafficking network, seizing 847 kilograms of high-grade ganja valued at over ₹4.2 crore in the illicit market and arrested two habitual offenders from Odisha. 847 kg of ganja worth ₹ 4.2 crore seized in Telangana; 2 held The operation is one of the largest and most precise anti-drug actions of 2025, targeting a supply corridor running from Malkangiri to Uttar Pradesh via Telangana and Karnataka, Superintendent of Police Ch Rupesh said. Based on credible intelligence, teams intercepted a pick-up vehicle near Shamshabad road near here on August 4 and seized 847 kg of ganja from the vehicle, and arrested the two persons Khilla Dhana and Rajendar B. According to an official release, Ramesh Sukri operated as the central coordinator from Malkangiri, linked to both arrested accused through their village network. His associate, Jagadish Kuldeep, procured bulk ganja from cultivators like Shibo and Basu in remote forest areas, they said. Ten days ago, the syndicate's primary buyer, Shaffiq from Uttar Pradesh, personally handed over the pick-up vehicle to Ramesh, instructing that it be loaded with 800 kg of ganja and delivered to UP by handing over at Shamshabad, it said. The syndicate's method was precise: ganja was first moved in small loads from fields to safe village outskirts, then repacked in bags containing brown-tape-wrapped packets to mask odour. Drivers used Bengaluru National Highway and Outer Ring Road bypasses to avoid checkpoints and handovers were arranged at city outskirts to minimise exposure, the release said. Communication was restricted to basic feature phones with fresh SIMs, discarded after trips. For security, Khilla carried a sword hidden among the bags. This system had allowed the syndicate to complete multiple large deliveries without interception - until the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement's action ended their run, it said. This action has crippled a major ganja supply route to North India, the release said, adding efforts are underway to nab the absconding accused. Financial investigation and property attachment proceedings will be initiated under the NDPS Act and BNSS, it said.
