Horse racing tips: ‘Champion jockey will make the difference' – Templegate's NAP loves this track

TEMPLEGATE takes on Wednesday's racing confident of unearthing a few winners. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. LERMOOS LEGEND (8.10 Cartmel, nap) Can keep it in the family at his favourite track. Champion jockey Sean Bowen teams up with brother Mickey on this 10-year-old who has two wins and a host of placed efforts at this quirky Cumbrian track. He went close at Ffos Las last time and gets an upgrade in the saddle today. ORIENTAL PRINCE (4.00 Hamilton, nb) Is a regular winner who got his head in front again at Haydock 18 days ago. He has lots of pace so this drop back in distance isn't a worry, especially with some cut back in the ground. Trainer Jim Goldie is in excellent form. TURQUINO (8.22 Kempton, treble) Showed promise when winning two maidens on the sand. He didn't get the run of the race on his turf handicap debut at Ascot and can take a big step forward. A WAR EAGLE (2.30 Hamilton, Lucky 15) He has shown promise for trainer Ed Bethell in three maidens and goes handicapping from a fair mark of 72. He'll enjoy this step up to a mile. There's no permission for building wall at Simhachalam save for oral instructions

Visakhapatnam: Recommendations will be made to the state government to ensure that incidents like Simhachalam wall collapse should not be repeated in future, emphasised Municipal Administration and Urban Development Principal Secretary S Suresh Kumar. Stating that the preliminary report of Simhachalam incident came to a close, the committee member said that the report will be submitted to the state government on Saturday. Sharing details with the media, Suresh Kumar underlined that there was no permission for the wall that was built in a hurry to facilitate queue line for Chandanotsavam. The wall was built based on oral instructions. The evidence for the preliminary report has been collected. There is a need to carry out the inquiry with state-level officials, the committee member said. He said apart from tourism and endowments department officials, priests of Simhachalam were also being probed and a detailed report will be readied in a month's time. The committee members further said that opinions will also be taken from the public and a detailed enquiry will be carried out. Suresh Kumar said the probe was being investigated from all angles and material sample was collected from the incident spot. 'The retaining wall was built in a hurry. There was no record for its approval and the standard maintained to build it,' the committee members stated. The wall collapse incident at Simhachalam claimed seven devotees. The three-member committee was constituted by the state government to investigate into Simhachalam wall collapse incident continued its investigation for the second day. Based on the directions of the state government, the committee carried out a preliminary report in 72 hours. The three-member committee under the chairmanship of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Principal Secretary S Suresh Kumar, EAGLE chief Ake Ravi Krishna, irrigation engineer in chief Venkateswara Rao launched the investigation visiting Simhachalam soon after the wall collapse incident occurred on Chandanostavam day.

3-member committee gets on toes to probe Simhachalam incident

Visakhapatnam: The committee constituted by the state government to probe into the tragic incident of wall collapse at Simhachalam temple on Chandanotsavam day launched the investigation on Thursday. A three-member committee was constituted by the state government to probe into the details of the unfortunate incident and dig out facts. As a preliminary report is expected to be submitted within 72 hours, the three-member committee under the chairmanship of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Principal Secretary S Suresh Kumar, EAGLE chief Ake Ravi Krishna, irrigation engineer in chief Venkateswara Rao reached Simhachalam uphill and launched the investigation. As part of the probe, the committee members examined the quality of the wall constructed at the Rs 300 queue line and looked into other technical aspects. Along with district collector MN Harendhira Prasad and City Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi, officials from the endowments department, tourism and other departments visited the incident spot on Thursday. However, who is going to be made responsible for the Simhachalam tragic incident needs to be seen. The recent stampede that occurred at Tirupati while waiting to collect tokens for darshan at Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Sri Venkateswara temple in Tirumala on the occasion of Vaikunta Ekadasi killed six people. After the investigation, the state government took action against those responsible for the incident. This included transfer of Tirupati SP and suspension of a few police officials. During his visit to Visakhapatnam to console the wall collapse victims of Simhachalam, former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy pointed out that instead of punishing the responsible officials in the stampede incident, the NDA government promoted them to higher positions. Further, the former CM expressed concern over how Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is quick in forming committees but negligent in taking action against the erring officials. As the inquiry into the wall collapse incident at Simhachalam is in progress, it may be noted that development works are going on at the shrine under the PRASAD scheme of the Central government. The wall that collapsed on the fateful day was also built by the same contractor. When enquired, it is learnt that the contractor informed the committee that the wall was raised in such a short span following the pressure from the engineering officials. Whether the wall was constructed as part of the PRASAD scheme's development works or not is also considered in the probe. The investigation involving engineering officials and contractors is likely to continue on Friday.

MTA plops another $5M to stop bus fare dodgers, but half of passengers still aren't paying: data

The MTA plopped down another $5 million to combat fare evasion on buses – as scofflaws continue to avoid the farebox with impunity. A pilot program that gives MTA workers handheld devices to check if Select Bus Service passengers paid for their rides will be extended to 2030 after a vote by the transit agency's board Wednesday. Transit officials, however, were mum on how well the pilot — for which board members approved a $4.9 million contract modification going to Cubic Transportation Systems — worked in the first place. More than 50% of passengers on Select Bus Service lines don't pay the fare, the MTA's own numbers show. Advertisement 'The success is that the technology worked,' said Jamie Torres-Springer, president of MTA construction and development, without providing any specific figures. The MTA extended a pilot program to stop fare evasion on buses. Stephen Yang Fare evasion has been a costly problem across the MTA's system of trains, buses, bridges and tunnels, with $700 million lost in 2022 alone. Advertisement The transit giant's quest to recover the lost revenue has led to some embarrassingly ineffective solutions, such as $700,000 electronic panel doors that were defeated on TikTok with a simple hack and a $1 million study into the psychology of fare beaters. Fare dodging on buses reached a peak of 49% of all bus passengers in summer 2024, although it has been inching downward since, MTA data shows. The MTA last summer deployed fare inspectors, known as EAGLE teams, to stop scofflaws on buses. Nearly half of bus passengers last summer skipped the farebox, according to MTA data. Christopher Sadowski Advertisement EAGLE teams have been using the so-called 'onboard validation devices,' which are mounted on MTA workers' mobile phones to scan credit cards to see if passengers indeed made payments, officials said. MTA boss Janno Lieber said the devices will help the agency fight fare evasion on buses. 'This is what the New York Post wants, pushing back against fare evasion,' he said, adding its down in subways 30% since last summer. 'There's been for the first time in some years some turnaround in bus fare evasion and we're determined to keep moving in the right direction by having a more effective fare evasion enforcement system and these devices are essential to do that.'

Minjee Lee chips in twice at LPGA's Blue Bay, gives nod to brother Min Woo

Prior to the Blue Bay LPGA, an event she won back in 2016, Minjee Lee said she's always felt comfortable on the property in Hainan, China. During her victory, Lee edged Jessica Korda by a stroke to win what was her third LPGA title. She has since won seven more times, including a pair of majors. But something about the setup at Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Course has always put her at ease, even with the pressure was ramped up. "I just really enjoy playing this golf course. I like that everything is very close, the hotel, the course; you can walk, so that's nice," Lee said during the pre-tournament press conference. "I just have really great memories here of the past five times I've been here. I enjoy my time every time. Yeah, that's what makes me want to come back." During Saturday's third round, Lee didn't have many highlights, but those she had were spectacular. The 18th-ranked player in the world made 14 pars on the day, one birdie and one bogey. But looking oh-so-comfortable around the greens, Lee had a pair of chip-in birdies, including one on the par-4 15th hole, and finished the day with a 68, pushing her to 6 under for the tournament. She trails leader Rio Takeda by three strokes, but is very much in contention as she enters the final round of action. Another chip in eagle for Minjee?!?! This time on a par 4?!?! 🤯 🤯 🤯 — LPGA (@LPGA) March 8, 2025 After the round she gave a tip of the cap to her brother, Min Woo, who has been to chip-in from time to time, including an amazing stretch at the 2024 PGA Championship where he did so three times in 11 holes. "A little inspiration from my little brother," Minjee said after her round. "They were in really great spots to chip, so, yeah, had a good opportunity to hole them. Definitely more on the, what's that hole, 15th hole. I was just on the rough; kind of got lucky to stay there. Chipped that one in. The one on the par 5 was a little bit tougher, but it was nice to see it go in." Minjee Lee chips in for EAGLE! 🦅 🔥 — LPGA (@LPGA) March 8, 2025 Lee, who hasn't won since the 2023 BMW Ladies Championship, doesn't think the course is playing just as it did when she won here in 2016, but she knows that patience will help as she tries to break her victory drought. "I feel like it's a little bit different conditions. I'm not really sure, but like it was nine years ago so I don't really remember too much. I just know that I have good memories," she said. "But I feel like I have to be quite patient out there. Like the first few holes I didn't really capitalize on my birdie opportunities, but then I knew I had some opportunities to finish the round. "I'm ust trying to stay patient and let the golf come to me more than anything." This article originally appeared on Golfweek: LPGA star Minjee Lee chips in twice at Blue Bay; gives nod to Min Woo
