VIJAYAWADA: In a concerted effort to curb the misuse of the restricted drug 'opioid,' the Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE), Drug Control Administration (DCA), and the Andhra Pradesh Chemists and Druggists Association launched Operation Garuda 2.0 with a state-wide workshop in Vijayawada on Monday.
EAGLE chief Ake Ravi Krishna, NTR DCP KGV Saritha, and DCA Director General Dr Manjula D Hosmani addressed the workshop, urging chemists and pharmaceutical traders not to sell opioids without a valid prescription.
Explaining the dangers of opioid misuse, Ravi Krishna said these drugs, derived from the opium poppy or synthesised in labs, are intended for managing moderate to severe pain. 'Youngsters are misusing opioids for a sense of euphoria. Prolonged use can lead to severe health and neurological issues,' he warned.
The officials stressed the need for stricter monitoring and compliance, highlighting the drug's addictive potential and its growing threat among youth.
DCA and EAGLE officials also resolved to conduct joint operations across the State to curb the illegal sale and misuse of opioids, signalling a stronger push against the narcotics menace.

Show cause notice to 149 medical shops in Telangana for illegal sale of abortion kits

The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) conducted a special inspection drive on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) to curb the illegal sale of abortion kits across medical shops. The inspections, held simultaneously in multiple districts, targeted unauthorised sale of Schedule-H drugs such as Mifepristone and Misoprostol tablets, commonly used in medical terminations of pregnancy. The drive, aimed at ensuring compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and associated rules, revealed serious violations in 149 medical shops. Show Cause notices were issued to these outlets, paving the way for departmental action, officials said. According to the DCA, the officers detected a range of violations during the inspections. These included selling abortion kits without a valid prescription, dispensing drugs in the absence of a licensed pharmacist, and failing to issue or maintain sales and purchase bills. Other lapses included the non-maintenance of prescription registers and irregularities in the documentation of stock records and invoices. 'Abortifacient drugs are powerful medications that should only be used under strict medical supervision. Their misuse can have life-threatening consequences. These inspections are part of our effort to ensure public safety and uphold the law,' said a release.

Telangana DCA flags antibiotic misuse violations in 193 medical shops

The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) conducted a special State-wide drive on Thursday (June 12), targeting indiscriminate sale of antibiotics in medical shops. As part of the drive, DCA officers inspected pharmacies across the State and uncovered serious violations in 193 medical shops. The crackdown focused on curbing unchecked distribution of antibiotics, which has been identified as a major contributor to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a global public health concern. According to officials, the offences included sale of antibiotics without a valid prescription from a Registered Medical Practitioner, absence of a qualified pharmacist during operations, failure to maintain mandatory records such as the Schedule H1 Drug Register and Prescription Register, and issuing drugs without proper billing. Show cause notices have been served on all 193 violators, and the DCA has assured that appropriate legal action will follow under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and relevant rule, the DCA said in a release.
