Villager killed in mudslide at CCL's Karma project in Ramgarh
Ramgarh, July 5 (UNI) A villager was killed in a mudslide near Central Coalfields Limited's (CCL) Karma project in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district late Friday night. The incident reportedly occurred in a restricted mining area following blasting activities conducted by the company.
According to Ramgarh SP Ajay Kumar, the deceased appears to have been near the coal dump when the incident took place. A few others sustained minor injuries. The mishap site is adjacent to Sugiya village, and preliminary inputs suggest the victims may have been involved in illegal coal collection.
Unconfirmed reports also claim that additional victims might have been trapped and their bodies removed by local residents before authorities reached the spot. However, officials have confirmed only one fatality so far.
CCL PRO Alok Kumar acknowledged the accident and said a detailed report would be shared after internal assessment by the project's general manager.

The ancient temple, located in Punjiama village under the Niladri Prasad panchayat of Banpur block in Khurda district, was built during the 6th–7th century CE under the rule of the Shailodbhava dynasty of the Kalinga kingdom.

Andhra liquor scam: Kickbacks laundered through employees, say police
A chargesheet filed by the Andhra Pradesh police in connection with the alleged Rs 3,500-crore liquor scam in a local court alleges that the kickbacks were systematically laundered through low-profile individuals, such as office boys or employees. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged liquor scam filed a supplementary chargesheet on Monday. "During the course of investigation, it was revealed that the accused have systematically laundered the kickback amount with the help of low-profile individuals who were working as office boys or employees in the companies owned by the accused," officials said quoting the chargesheet. "Such employees and individuals acted as couriers and mules for depositing illicit cash into a network of bank accounts linked to the syndicate," they added. This pattern of cash layering and circulation demonstrates a deliberate attempt to conceal the origin of crime proceeds, constituting a classic case of structured money laundering and concealment under the garb of petty deposits, they further said. A portion of the liquor kickbacks was transferred to the employees and associates of the accused as salary, they further said adding it was also observed that several of such low-profile individuals were made to send the cash deposited into their account to other accused. The SIT probing the alleged liquor scam arrested several people, including YSRCP Lok Sabha member PV Midhun Reddy, in the case. In May, the Enforcement Directorate also filed a money laundering case to investigate the alleged liquor scam. The federal probe agency has filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to probe alleged irregularities in the sales of liquor in the state. The previous chargesheet filed last month mentioned former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy as the recipient of kickbacks averaging Rs 50-Rs 60 crore per month. The 305-page chargesheet, however, stopped short of naming Jagan accused. When contacted, former minister and senior YSRCP leader Ambati Rambabu told PTI that all the allegations made in the chargesheet are baseless and created ones.

Karnataka man briefly detained, fined Rs 25,000 for trying to click selfie with elephant in Bandipur reserve
Officers with the Karnataka Forest Department on Monday briefly detained a man who sustained injuries while trying to click a selfie with a wild elephant on the national highway that passes through the Bandipur Tiger Reserve where vehicles are strictly prohibited from stopping. A fine of Rs 25,000 was imposed on the man, and officers also took an undertaking from him that he would not indulge in such acts again. According to forest department officers, R Basavaraj, a resident of Nanjangud, was attacked by the wild elephant on NH 67 at around 5.30 pm on Sunday. He escaped with minor injuries though the elephant chased him for a distance and is also seen stomping on him in a video that soon went viral. The incident briefly affected traffic on the stretch. Forest officers soon launched a search for Basavaraj and took him into custody from his residence on Monday. S Prabhakaran, Deputy Conservator of Forests and Director of Bandipur Tiger Reserve, said that on being questioned, he admitted to having flouted the reserve's rules. In a video recorded subsequently, Basavaraj is seen issuing a warning to other tourists. 'I was returning from Bankapura temple when I spotted the elephant on the highway. I went near the animal and was trying to take a selfie when it chased and attacked me. No one should be involved in such acts. Don't stop vehicles on highways that pass through forests. Do not get down to attend nature's call. Do not offer food to wild animals,' he said. On learning about the incident, Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre directed officers to deploy patrol vehicles on highways similar to the patrolling system inside the forest. Stern action should be taken against those who violate norms by offering food to wild animals, disembarking from vehicles, speeding on such stretches, and driving negligently, he stated.

Retired IFS officer gets two years RI in DA case in Odisha
BHUBANESWAR : A Special Vigilance Court on Monday awarded two years rigorous imprisonment (RI) to retired IFS officer Amresh Kumar Jaiswal for possessing disproportionate assets (DA). The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. The DA case against Jaiswal dates back to 2002 when he was posted as divisional forest officer (DFO) in Sambalpur. He was found in possession of DA amounting to Rs 28 lakh. In 2008, the anti-corruption agency had filed the charge sheet against him under sections 13(2) and 13(1)(e) of Prevention of Corruption Act. He had retired as conservator of forests in the office of principal chief conservator of forests, Bhubaneswar, in 2021. After Jaiswal's conviction, the state Vigilance said it will now move the competent authority to stop his pension. Former Vigilance DSP of Sambalpur division Swarup Kumar Parida had investigated the corruption case against Jaiswal. The prosecution was led by advocates Rakesh Sahu and Jyoti Prakash Mohapatra.
