Andhra liquor scam: Kickbacks laundered through employees, say police

A chargesheet filed by the Andhra Pradesh police in connection with the alleged Rs 3,500-crore liquor scam in a local court alleges that the kickbacks were systematically laundered through low-profile individuals, such as office boys or employees.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged liquor scam filed a supplementary chargesheet on Monday.
"During the course of investigation, it was revealed that the accused have systematically laundered the kickback amount with the help of low-profile individuals who were working as office boys or employees in the companies owned by the accused," officials said quoting the chargesheet.
"Such employees and individuals acted as couriers and mules for depositing illicit cash into a network of bank accounts linked to the syndicate," they added.
This pattern of cash layering and circulation demonstrates a deliberate attempt to conceal the origin of crime proceeds, constituting a classic case of structured money laundering and concealment under the garb of petty deposits, they further said.
A portion of the liquor kickbacks was transferred to the employees and associates of the accused as salary, they further said adding it was also observed that several of such low-profile individuals were made to send the cash deposited into their account to other accused.
The SIT probing the alleged liquor scam arrested several people, including YSRCP Lok Sabha member PV Midhun Reddy, in the case.
In May, the Enforcement Directorate also filed a money laundering case to investigate the alleged liquor scam.
The federal probe agency has filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to probe alleged irregularities in the sales of liquor in the state.
The previous chargesheet filed last month mentioned former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy as the recipient of kickbacks averaging Rs 50-Rs 60 crore per month.
The 305-page chargesheet, however, stopped short of naming Jagan accused.
When contacted, former minister and senior YSRCP leader Ambati Rambabu told PTI that all the allegations made in the chargesheet are baseless and created ones.

Assets case: Court rejects vigilance clean chit to ADGP

Thiruvananthapuram : The Special Vigilance Court here on Thursday rejected the vigilance department's report that exonerated ADGP M R Ajith Kumar in the disproportionate assets case, citing that the inquiry was "incomplete" and lacking in essential procedures. The court directed the recording of the statement of petitioner Adv Neyyattinkara Nagaraju, who sought a proper investigation of allegations against the additional director general of police, before deciding whether to order a fresh probe. After examining the report approved by the govt, it said the vigilance inquiry — conducted by a special unit on the state govt's directive — failed to meet even basic investigative standards. It noted that the officer's annual asset statements and income tax returns from 1994 to 2025 were never collected, while the raids on his residence and flat yielded no critical documents. There was no valuation certificate for gold, silver, diamonds and other valuables, despite the possibility of such an assessment by relevant authorities. The court further observed that bank accounts, fixed deposit receipts and bank lockers were not examined, nor was permission under the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968, produced for the purchase or sale of movable and immovable assets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Authorities like the registration IG and the land revenue commissioner were never contacted to identify undisclosed assets. The investigators also failed to collect call detail records from nodal officers or analyse the call and tower location data of the accused through the hi-tech enquiry cell, it said. No clear distinction was made between legitimate income and alleged unexplained wealth, and the percentage of asset growth over the period was never calculated. It also cited the failure to trace the teak logs allegedly removed from the Malappuram SP office and accused the vigilance of deliberately withholding incriminating evidence. A key omission flagged by the court was the disregard for the testimony of the Vanchiyoor SBI home loan chief manager that the construction of a multi-storeyed residence by the accused in Kowdiar was a Rs 3.58-crore project — a figure absent from the final report. The vigilance probe, which followed allegations raised by former MLA P V Anwar, concluded that the property transactions and construction records were in order and there was no proof of illegal wealth accumulation. The officer had courted controversies earlier too, with allegations coming up over his role in last year's Pooram sabotage row, his meetings with RSS leaders, his tractor ride to Sabarimala and links with a gold smuggling racket. PCMC recovers 167cr property tax in amnesty period

Navi Mumbai: Panvel City Municipal Corporation recovered Rs 167 crore property tax paid by 60,082 property holders. Since the launch of the amnesty scheme, 37,519 property owners have taken 90% fine exemption with a day left (Aug 15) and collectively availed Rs 64.8 crore. A protest was held on Wednesday on the property tax. The scheme was effective from July 18 to Sept 20 but split into four tiers. Those clearing their outstanding property tax between Aug 16 and Aug 31 would get 75% rebate, between Sept 1 and Sept 10 would get 50% discount and from Sept 11 to Sept 20, a 25% waiver of the fine amount. Thousands hit the streets in Panvel to take part in a protest rally covering about 1 km between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk and PCMC head office. Seven major political parties besides various social and other forums joined the protest terming the property tax levied as unlawful, impractical and intended to divert public attention. Kharghar Colony Forum president, Leena Garad, had appealed to the residents not to pay the property taxes even under the amnesty scheme. Later, leaders jointly handed over a memorandum to the PCMC chief, Mangesh Chitale. Talking to the media, Patil alleged that the ruling party had promised to not hike any tax for five years but started collecting the property tax with fine/interest. There is no rebate offered on the basic property tax but the amnesty scheme launched is only to provide relief on the fines/interest amounts. The parties have alleged that despite PCMC being a 'D' class municipal corporation, the property tax levied is equivalent to that of 'A' class civic body like Mumbai. Dharmasthala burials case: It's an international conspiracy, says BJP

Bengaluru: Opposition BJP Thursday claimed the investigation into alleged mass murders in Dharmasthala was part of another attempt to defame and demean Hindu religious institutions and alleged a network of "urban Naxals and foreign nationals" was behind the conspiracy. During a half-hour debate in the assembly on the case, BJP members said vested interests were attempting to hurt Hindu sentiments. However, home minister G Parameshwara insisted the special investigation team (SIT) was formed to get to the truth "and not play politics" and that a detailed reply would be presented Monday. Opposition leader R Ashoka called it "a national conspiracy". "They began with Tirupati with the seven hills, then went on to Shani Shingnapura and reached Sabarimala, where women were encouraged to enter the premises. Now, the toolkit is trying to defame Dharmasthala Manjunatha temple and the trust," Ashoka said. He accused conspirators of using the 2012 Soujanya murder case, in which the accused was released for lack of evidence, as an excuse to defame Dharmasthala temple and its trust. "A single remark of alleged communal disharmony against a certain community results in our Hindu workers being booked and sent to jail. But when it comes to remarks posted on social media hurting Hindu sentiments, not a single case is booked," he said. Ashoka accused the govt of being party to efforts to defame Hindu society and demanded that the administration present an interim report on the special investigation team's (SIT) probe. He also called for disclosure of the man behind the mask who is leading investigators to the alleged mass burial sites. BJP sought a narco-analysis test on the masked man and demanded that the investigation be handed over to National Investigation Agency (NIA), alleging the involvement of foreign funding for "small-time accusers" and YouTubers. In response, Parameshwara said: "We have as much faith and belief as you, or even more, in Dharmasthala Manjunatha and the Dharmadhikari Veerendra Hegde's philanthropic and religious efforts. We only want to get to the bottom of the truth." Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar said the govt stood firmly with the Dharmasthala temple and its trust, and that the probe was intended to put all allegations permanently to rest.
