Dharmasthala burials case: It's an international conspiracy, says BJP
During a half-hour debate in the assembly on the case, BJP members said vested interests were attempting to hurt Hindu sentiments. However, home minister G Parameshwara insisted the
special investigation team
(SIT) was formed to get to the truth "and not play politics" and that a detailed reply would be presented Monday.
Opposition leader R Ashoka called it "a national conspiracy". "They began with Tirupati with the seven hills, then went on to Shani Shingnapura and reached Sabarimala, where women were encouraged to enter the premises.
Now, the toolkit is trying to defame Dharmasthala Manjunatha temple and the trust," Ashoka said.

Former minister V Sunil Kumar said that in the name of freedom of speech, YouTubers were hurting Hindu religious sentiments. He accused conspirators of using the 2012 Soujanya murder case, in which the accused was released for lack of evidence, as an excuse to defame Dharmasthala temple and its trust. "A single remark of alleged communal disharmony against a certain community results in our Hindu workers being booked and sent to jail.
But when it comes to remarks posted on social media hurting Hindu sentiments, not a single case is booked," he said.
Ashoka accused the govt of being party to efforts to defame Hindu society and demanded that the administration present an interim report on the special investigation team's (SIT) probe. He also called for disclosure of the man behind the mask who is leading investigators to the alleged mass burial sites.
BJP sought a narco-analysis test on the masked man and demanded that the investigation be handed over to National Investigation Agency (NIA), alleging the involvement of foreign funding for "small-time accusers" and YouTubers.
In response, Parameshwara said: "We have as much faith and belief as you, or even more, in Dharmasthala Manjunatha and the Dharmadhikari Veerendra Hegde's philanthropic and religious efforts. We only want to get to the bottom of the truth."
Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar said the govt stood firmly with the Dharmasthala temple and its trust, and that the probe was intended to put all allegations permanently to rest.

Lucknow, More than 8,000 people convicted of serious crimes have been sentenced to life in prison while 70 have been given the death penalty in Uttar Pradesh in the past two years, Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna informed on Friday. Over 8,000 get life term, 70 given death penalty in UP in two years: DGP informs on Independence Day During his address at an Independence Day celebration here, he underlined the police's zero-tolerance policy towards crime and corruption. The DGP further said that cops are prioritising technology and community-oriented policing along with success of 'Mission Shakti', which he said has made women in the state feel safer. He also said, "Over one lakh people have been convicted since July 1, 2023, with 70 receiving death sentences and 8,785 sentenced to life imprisonment," and termed the figures a testament to the force's resolve against crime. Since 2017, 34 mafia figures and 91 of their associates have been convicted, with two awarded the death penalty, Krishna said, adding that property worth over ₹14,400 crore has been seized under the Gangster Act. He credited the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force, Anti-Terrorist Squad, Anti-Narcotics Task Force and district police for dismantling criminal networks. He also listed ten key priorities for the force, including empowering women and addressing every citizen's complaint with sensitivity and speed. This year, 17 police personnel have been awarded the President's Gallantry Medal, six the distinguished service medal, 72 the meritorious service medal, 763 the excellent service medal and 486 the distinguished service medal, besides other awards and commendations, he added. The DGP also said 60,244 new constables are being trained in a "hybrid mode" that includes technical skills, cybercrime investigation, community engagement and simulation-based decision-making using AI tools. He also praised the Uttar Pradesh-112 emergency service, which he termed the best in the country, and said the police headquarters' social media centre has saved 1,257 lives since January 1, 2023, by responding to suicidal posts a "global best practice". He concluded that the Uttar Pradesh Police aims to become a global standard for modern, sensitive and empowered policing by 2047, with the ultimate measure of success being "a smiling, confident and safe citizen". ‘MNS and Sena UBT will contest together in BMC polls': Sanjay Raut
Amid the buzz of an alliance between the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Shiv Sena (UBT), Sena UBT MP Sanjay Raut on Friday claimed that Uddhav and Raj Thackeray will together contest the upcoming civic body elections in the state including the BMC and emerge victorious. Though brothers Raj and Uddhav Thackeray have not yet officially announced anything regarding a pre-poll alliance, Raut said talks were already underway for several municipal corporations, including Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Kalyan Dombivali and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. He asserted that 'no one can break the unity of the Thackerays.' 'The Thackeray brothers will contest the civic polls together and they will win. Talks are already going on for several municipal corporations, including Mumbai, Thane, Nashik and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. No evil force can now break the unity of the Thackerays,' he said. 'For Maharashtra and Marathi unity, the brothers have unsheathed the sword. Our discussions with MNS are still ongoing, but the goal is clear—to ensure victory in every civic body where we contest together,' he added. Although neither Uddhav nor Raj has formally announced the official alliance, the two parties have already come together for the August 18 election to the BEST Employees Co-operative Credit Society in Mumbai where the Sena (UBT)-affiliated BEST Kamgar Sena and the MNS-affiliated BEST Kamgar Sena are contesting jointly against a BJP-backed panel led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's aides Prasad Lad and Pravin Darekar. The move marks the first electoral collaboration between the cousins in years, following a series of public appearances together—including a Marathi language event earlier this year on July 5 in Mumbai and Raj's visit to 'Matoshree' on Uddhav's birthday. Sena UBT sees Mumbai and Thane as a key battleground. For the Sena UBT, winning the BMC would be retaining its bastion and rule over Mumbai and winning Thane Municipal Corporation would be a symbolic blow to rival Eknath Shinde, whose political career began there and who currently dominates the body. Leaders from Sena UBT believe that an alliance could revive their organisational presence in Mumbai, Thane and Nashik, where both parties have historically drawn significant Marathi support. The BJP, however, dismissed Raut's statement, with BJP leader Pravin Darekar likening the Sena (UBT) to 'an impatient groom who injures his knee before the wedding' and alleging that Raut feared his party's 'extinction' without MNS support. Since the speculation began, workers and office-bearers from both parties have been seen together at protests and public functions, further fuelling talk that the estranged cousins may formally reunite for the long-delayed municipal polls across Maharashtra. Meanwhile, Raut also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his independence day speech, alleging he had turned the country 'from religious to fanatically religious' and 'adopted the Congress's Swadeshi slogan, becoming Gandhian–Nehruvian.'

Congress' contributions in freedom movement must be highlighted, says leader
Congress Party in-charge of Gajapathinagaram Constituency Chitrada Durgaprasad on Friday said that the party's contribution in India's freedom movement and the development of Independent India should be highlighted for the present generation. He urged the students pursuing courses in History to ensure that others also know the importance of freedom struggle and sacrifices of great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and others. He hoisted tricolour in Gajapathinagaram office and asked the party activists to highlight the Congress Party's great role in achievement of independence from the British. He said that the BJP and its frontal organisations have been misusing social media platforms to undermine the contribution of the Congress Party and to show the first Prime Minister of the country Jawaharlal Nehru in a poor light. He hoped that the Congress would soon get back its glory as people have been observing the qualities of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
