Potential thunderstorm watch for Central Florida

Potential thunderstorm watch for Central Florida

Yahoo09-05-2025

A severe thunderstorm watch may be issued shortly for Central Florida, as our sea breezes will have more instability to work with through mid-evening tonight. I expect us to get active from 5 p.m. until around 9 p.m.
Our Weather Alert Day continues for heavy to a few severe storms this evening, which we're focused on now. The weekend remains a Weather Alert Day toss-up as we may not have quite the same severe risk as today, but if the threat changes and goes higher, we'll add additional Weather Alert Days as needed.
Monday continues to be our highest overall probability for impactful weather, especially heavy rain, and possible severe storms as a front moves in, bringing our wet season preview to a halt. I've also added Monday to our 7-day as an alert day.

Tropicana Field repairs move forward 8 months after hurricane damage

An iconic baseball stadium in Florida is one step closer to being fixed. It's been about 8 months since Hurricane Milton ripped the roof off of Tropicana Field in Saint Pete. Local leaders just approved additional funding for repairs. Those funds will be used to clean up the stadium, repair its metal panels, and provide on-site security. Some people are pushing back against this funding, but city leaders say they're contractually obligated to fix the stadium. Click here to download our free news, weather and smart TV apps. Central Florida is expected to see Saharan dust pass through

Today, millions of Americans in Eastern states will see smoke and haze. It's Saharan dust and tomorrow it'll be here in central Florida. Dust from Africa's Sahara Desert is heading West across the Atlantic Ocean. Channel 9 certified meteorologist Daniel McFarland says it's currently over the Caribbean and will be here by tomorrow. 'Sometimes Africa has different weather that could be kicking up that dust.' It'll be here at least through Sunday, with a potential impact on next week. McFarland notes, 'You'll notice a slight haze, but it'll be pretty faint.' However, the dust that settles on us could cause issues for those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma. According to Dr. Gayathri Kapoor with Orlando Health, it can cause symptoms like an itchy or runny nose and coughing. She says those with respiratory issues should plan ahead. 'If you can help it, stay indoors, but if you do need to go out... Carry your medications with you... Change your clothes or at least take a shower, just to make sure the dust, you can get rid of it easily.' Click here to download our free news, weather and smart TV apps. New Smyrna Beach piers damaged by hurricanes could reopen in time for 4th of July

Two fishing piers in New Smyrna Beach damaged by recent hurricanes may reopen in time for the 4th of July. City leaders say materials are now on the way for the full replacement of the Brannon Center Boat Dock and repairs to two fishing piers at Riverside Park. The city says the dock and the piers were damaged in hurricanes Ian and Milton. The dock is expected to open by late September and the piers by July 4th.
