Weather Alert Day: Strong to severe storms bring excessive rainfall, flooding concerns

Strong to severe storms will impact most of Central Florida on Monday. Channel 9 meteorologists have issued a 'Weather Alert Day' for Monday due to the storms' impact. One primary concern from the storms is over localized flooding, with some areas set to receive inches of rain. Heavy rain is moving off the coast, and we'll see scattered showers and downpours through midday. A front will bring another round of storms on Monday afternoon. Forecast data shows a risk for severe thunderstorms on Monday afternoon. Small hail and strong winds will be the most significant concerns with the afternoon storms. Our area will start to dry out overnight. Central Florida will be dry and hot for the rest of the week. Highs will be in the mid-90s by Friday and stick around for the weekend. A Weather Alert Day is set for Monday

A Weather Alert Day is planned for Monday as a combo of heavy and possibly severe storms and heavy rain are in the forecast. A storm system over the northern Gulf coast is fueling things along with our seabreezes, though the cooler day we had for Mother's Day and Monday will hopefully work to reduce our overall severe threat. Channel 9's Kassandra Crimi will keep track of morning rain and scattered afternoon storms for Monday. Expect a possible 2-5″ of rain, and we'll monitor for any short-term flooding. After this system moves by, we're looking at the hottest weather possibly of the entire year with highs well into the mid and maybe upper 90s later next week. Potential thunderstorm watch for Central Florida

A severe thunderstorm watch may be issued shortly for Central Florida, as our sea breezes will have more instability to work with through mid-evening tonight. I expect us to get active from 5 p.m. until around 9 p.m. Our Weather Alert Day continues for heavy to a few severe storms this evening, which we're focused on now. The weekend remains a Weather Alert Day toss-up as we may not have quite the same severe risk as today, but if the threat changes and goes higher, we'll add additional Weather Alert Days as needed. Monday continues to be our highest overall probability for impactful weather, especially heavy rain, and possible severe storms as a front moves in, bringing our wet season preview to a halt. I've also added Monday to our 7-day as an alert day. Click here to download our free news, weather and smart TV apps. And click here to stream Channel 9 Eyewitness News live.
