Kershaw, the 2014 NL MVP and Cy Young winner, triumphed in his trip down Memory Lane. The future Hall of Famer limited the Cardinals to one run and struck out seven over five innings.
Perhaps more importantly, Kershaw finally earned his first win of the season and now sits 17 strikeouts short of 3,000. The veteran lefty's strong outing came after the Cardinals showed a video of ex-Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams homering off him in the 2014 NLDS.
Although plenty of pitchers might laugh the insult off or outright dismiss it, Kershaw didn't hide his disappointment.
'I think it's a little bush league,' Kershaw told reporters, 'but I don't expect anything less from these guys. So, it's no worries.'

As of publication, the Cardinals had not addressed Kershaw's comments.

It's rare for an opposing player to call out a team's Jumbotron graphics or videos. That didn't stop Kershaw, who moved to 12-6 with a 2.84 ERA over 23 career starts against the Cardinals, from expressing his frustration.
Kershaw got the final laugh, though, and it came at a much-needed time for the inconsistent Dodgers. Sunday's victory salvaged the final game of a three-game set and kept the Dodgers one game above both the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants in the NL West.

Red Sox All-Star Aroldis Chapman Could Be 'First Moved' Ahead of Trade Deadline

Red Sox All-Star Aroldis Chapman Could Be 'First Moved' Ahead of Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the MLB trade deadline approaches, Aroldis Chapman has emerged as one of the most intriguing bullpen arms available, and the Boston Red Sox may soon have to decide whether to move him. Advertisement "Chapman is in the midst of his best season since 2016," wrote Theo DeRosa, who recently named the veteran left-hander one of nine relief pitchers who could be dealt this summer. "The left-hander has a 1.80 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 25 innings for the Red Sox, who have gone cold and currently occupy fourth place in the American League East. If Boston decides to sell, Chapman could be among the first players moved." Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (44) pitches against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Biggerstaff-Imagn Images Signed this offseason to a one-year, $10.75 million deal, Chapman has been a rare bright spot in an otherwise inconsistent Red Sox bullpen. In 30 appearances, he has posted a 1.65 ERA over 27 1/3 innings with a dominant 34 percent strikeout rate. His fastball velocity and command have returned to elite form, resulting in a likely All-Star nod in the mid-summer classic. In the middle of a nine-game stretch against the AL East, the Red Sox have already won two of three games over the New York Yankees, and if they come out winners by the end of the week, it could prompt the Red Sox to refrain from selling in the immediate future. Advertisement However, Monday's loss vs. the Tampa Bay Rays dropped the Red Sox to 32–36 on the year. Unless Boston can reverse course quickly, Chapman could become trade bait at the deadline and net Boston quite the return for the once again dominant closer. Nick Sirianni: We have to be even better at tush push now

The Eagles will still be able to run the tush push this year, but head coach Nick Sirianni said on Tuesday that they will have to raise the level of their execution. A Packers proposal to ban the play failed to get enough votes from team owners to pass and Sirianni was asked about his reaction to the vote as well as the fact that the Cardinals and Colts — both teams are coached by former Eagles coordinators — voted in favor of the ban. Sirianni declined to say anything about how the vote played out, but pivoted to say that all the attention paid to the play means the Eagles will have to put more work in to make sure it remains a winning call for them. 'Excited about being able to continue to grow that play,' Sirianni said, via a transcript from the team. 'We have a lot of work to do to continue that success. It just doesn't happen. The same work that we needed to put into it last year, we'll even have to be better because we know teams are going to focus on it to try to stop it and we'll even have to be better at how we coach it and how we perform it and how we execute. So that's really try not to focus too much on things that I can't control and only focus on the things that you can. That's our process right now to think about the ways that we're going to get to get better at running that play and the compliments that come off of it.' Teams trying to knock off the Super Bowl champs will be working to come up with effective counters to the play as well and it will be interesting to see what tweaks both sides make once action gets underway in the fall.

Shohei Ohtani notches 6 strikeouts in 3 simulated innings against live batters as he ramps up return to mound

Shohei Ohtani was back on the mound on Tuesday as he ramps up his return to pitching in an actual MLB game. By most accounts he looked pretty good. Ohtani pitched three simulated innings against live minor league batters at Petco Park Tuesday afternoon prior to the NL West tilt between his Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. Advertisement Per and The Athletic, Ohtani threw 44 pitches. Per The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya, Ohtani allowed one hit and one walk and threw a wild pitch. He recorded six of his nine outs via strikeout. Here's video of a swinging strike to record the final out of his session: Again, the effort was against minor league batters during batting practice. But it's another encouraging sign for the Dodgers and their fans eager to see the two-way superstar pitch in Dodger blue for the first time. Tuesday's simulated innings were Ohtani's first on the mound since a May 31 session that went two innings. It was his third time overall throwing a live batting practice session and the first time he's exceeded two innings. Advertisement Ohtani's pitching work was previously limited to bullpen sessions that didn't involve batters. So when will Ohtani actually pitch? There were no immediate updates from the Dodgers after Ohtani's session on Tuesday. Roberts previously said after Ohtani's May 31 session that he'll need to reach "five or six" simulated innings before the Dodgers consider putting him into an actual baseball game. Shohei Ohtani continues to progress on the mound, but a return timeline to pitching in an actual game remains unclear. (AP Photo/Joe Puetz) (ASSOCIATED PRESS) '[He] used his entire mix, take some hitters up, down and came out of it well, which is most important,' Roberts said on May 31. 'I think he wishes his command would have been a little bit better. But a really positive day for Shohei. Advertisement 'You still got to get to five or six innings, so we still got a ways to go. … I didn't ask what the velocity was, I would think a safe guess is somewhere in the mid 90s.' Ohtani hasn't pitched in a game since August 23, 2023, when he was a member of the Los Angeles Angels. He underwent surgery a month later for the second time to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018. Ohtani signed with the Dodgers the following offseason and earned his third MVP after a historic 50-50 season at the plate. The Dodgers went on to a World Series championship, Ohtani's first. Ohtani's off to another sensational start at the plate that includes an NL-best 23 home runs through Monday. But his return to the mound is still unclear as his absence approaches the two-year mark. Advertisement A 40-27 Dodgers team leading a tight race in the NL West could certainly use the pitching services of Ohtani, who's at an All-Star level at his best. But don't expect them to throw caution to the wind. They won't put Ohtani on the mound until they and their medical staff are fully convinced that he's ready. In the meantime, the Dodgers and their fans can take solace in Ohtani's quest for a fourth MVP at the plate.
