Jaundice outbreak reported from Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district

Time of India3 days ago

Kochi: A major jaundice (Hepatitis A) outbreak is spreading in Avoly and nearby panchayats in Muvattupuzha, around 47km from the city. Since the first case was reported on May 30, as many as 51 primary cases were reported until Monday.
Of the 51 cases, 21 are from Avoly. With the incubation period of Hepatitis A virus being two weeks to 45 days, health authorities expect more cases to surface in the coming days. Officials from district medical office visited Avoly on Monday and directed measures to contain the infection from spreading further.
Hepatitis A is contracted from contaminated water or food. The source of the infection is suspected to be food served during a pre-wedding function at a house in Nadukkara, ninth ward of Avoly panchayat, on May 3.
Around 150 people, including neighbours and relatives from Avoly, Manjalloor and Arakuzha panchayats in Muvattupuzha and Idukki and Alappuzha districts attended the event. Even ward members contracted jaundice after attending the function.
A catering agency, from Marady panchayat, served food at the house on May 3. The same agency served food during a wedding function on May 5. Following the outbreak, health authorities closed the agency.

Reportedly, the agency used cold water from the house to dilute boiled water before serving it.
"Only those who attended the pre-wedding function were infected with jaundice. However, we couldn't collect water samples from the house well for testing as the first case was reported on May 30. Before that, we did routine chlorination in the well as part of the local body's regular exercise. Ice cream, chutney to serve with dosa and other items were served during the function.
Items like chutney are prepared with cold water.
Also, they diluted boiled water with the house well water. We couldn't confirm which food item was the source of the outbreak. Our current objective is to ensure no secondary infection. For that, an awareness class to those who attended the function is underway," said an Avoly health official.
Wells in the affected areas are now being super chlorinated by increasing the quantity of chlorine depending on water in it.
Nadukkara ward member Selby John refuted the chances of infection from the house. "The family cleaned their well a week before the function. Hence, there is no chance of it being the source of the outbreak. The source of the infection must be the ice cubes used in welcome drinks. None of those infected is in a serious condition," Selby said.

Chandigarh administration proposes reduced security deposit for group home for mental health patients

1 2 Chandigarh: On the contentious issue of the 'exorbitant' security deposit for the Group Home for persons with mental disabilities, the Chandigarh administration is finally relenting and will reduce the deposit required for admission to the home. On the directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court, the administration called a meeting of the governing body of the UTTHAAN Group Home Society on Friday to discuss the quantum of the security deposit. "In the meeting, the administration proposed staggering the security deposit in terms of the category of the room – ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh," said Damanjeet Singh, Governing Body member (Family representative), UTTHAAN Group Home Society, who attended Friday's governing body meeting. Currently, the security deposit amount is Rs 20 lakh for all categories of rooms. Instead of Rs 20 lakh for everyone, the administration has proposed a category-wise security deposit. For the suite, it is proposed to remain the same at Rs 20 lakh; for the single room resident, it would be Rs 15 lakh; and for the double room resident, it is proposed to be Rs 10 lakh. The UT proposal will be submitted for the approval of the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, and after his nod, it will be submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo On May 19, the high court, terming the security deposit of Rs 20 lakh for admission to the Group Home as "exorbitant," directed the administration to reconsider it. The bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sumeet Goel instructed the administration to "apply its mind on the aspect of the quantum of security amount of Rs 20 lakh, which deprives admission into the said Mental Illness Home even to deserving mental health patients merely because of a paucity of funds. " The court observed, "After hearing learned counsel for the rival parties, especially on the question of the quantum of security deposit of Rs 20 lakh required for admission of mental health patients in Group Utthaan Society and testing the same on the anvil of the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, particularly Sections 18, 19, 20, and 21 of the Act, mandating every person suffering from mental illness to be treated with dignity, reasonableness, and without any discrimination, the quantum of security deposit of Rs 20 lakh is exorbitant. " In 2018, the parents and guardians of mental health patients demanded the setting up of a Group Home for mental health patients. Though the construction of the group home was completed, it is yet to become operational. Parents/guardians seek further reduction On the administration's proposal, parents and guardians have sought a further reduction. A parent, on the condition of anonymity, said, "As per the latest proposal, this works out to approximately equivalent to five years of monthly fees, which is still too much. Parents have been asking for a reduction of the security deposit equivalent to one year's fee." Parents and guardians have been demanding the security deposit to be fixed at Rs 4 lakh for suite residents; Rs 3 lakh for single room residents; and Rs 2 lakh for double room residents. "This is broadly in line with the security deposit being taken by NGO-run Group Homes across India," contend parents. Deposit row In 2022, the Chandigarh administration finally decided to set up such a group home in Sector 31. The group home building was completed in 2024. In October 2024, in the first meeting of the governing body, the security deposit was fixed at Rs 40 lakh for a suite, Rs 30 lakh for a single room, and Rs 20 lakh for a double room. This was opposed by the parents and guardians. In June 2024, the administration set it at Rs 20 lakh for types of rooms. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Death toll rises to four in Tenkasi shelter food contamination case

Tenkasi: The death toll in the suspected food contamination incident at a private shelter home in Sundarapandiapuram near Tenkasi rose to four on Friday. A 70-year-old woman, identified as Dhanalakshmi, who was undergoing treatment for severe digestive complications at the Tenkasi govt hospital, died without responding to treatment on Friday. Meanwhile, eight more residents — Ram Lakshmi, Esakkiammal, Mariammal, Mumtaz, Karuppayi, Selvaraj, Kaliyappan, and Meenatchi Sundaram — who showed worsening symptoms, were shifted to the Tirunelveli Govt Medical College Hospital from Tenkasi GH for advanced care. Revathi Balan, dean of Tirunelveli GH, said all eight are currently stable and receiving treatment, but one of them, Mariammal, was admitted to the intensive care unit. "They are being closely monitored due to their age and underlying health conditions," she said. Sources at the Tenkasi GH said early symptoms and preliminary lab reports indicate a possible infection, most likely caused by contaminated food. "All concerned departments — food safety, health, and police — will be submitting their findings to the district collector in a day," said a senior doctor. "Many of those affected were already in a weakened state, with low immunity, which prompted the decision to shift several critical cases to Tirunelveli," the doctor added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo Pushpa Raj, designated officer of the food safety department, said, "We are awaiting three key test results on Saturday. These will be handed over to the district collector, who will decide on releasing the details to the public." It may be recalled that three other residents — Shankar, 48, Murugammal, 45, and Ambika, 40 — died earlier this week after allegedly consuming meat-based food served at the Annai Nalvalvu Trust shelter home on Sunday night. The shelter, which houses more than 60 residents, including the elderly and those with mental disabilities, is run by Rajendran. He was detained by the Tenkasi police on Thursday, and investigations are ongoing. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . AU team in Ladakh to study water scheme implementation

P rayagraj: A team of researchers from Allahabad University's department of geography is currently conducting a field survey in the remote and high-altitude regions of Ladakh. Led by associate professor Pawan Sharma , the study focuses on evaluating and strengthening the implementation of the govt of India's flagship Jal Jeevan Mission (Har Ghar Jal) in ecologically fragile and topographically difficult terrains. The initiative is part of a project sanctioned by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi. The Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to provide every rural household with a functional tap water connection, faces formidable obstacles in the Himalayan regions. The research team is closely examining ground-level realities, infrastructural bottlenecks, and traditional water practices in villages scattered across the high Himalayas. In these areas, extreme cold, limited oxygen availability, and poor connectivity severely impact both habitation and the feasibility of consistent development interventions. During their fieldwork near the Changla Pass, situated at an altitude of 17,688 feet, the team encountered life-threatening health emergencies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Urologists: What 90% Of Men With ED Don't Know (Start Doing This) health-paradise Learn More Undo Pawan Sharma, who is the project director, suffered a severe drop in oxygen saturation levels—below 55%—along with a high fever, necessitating urgent oxygen support. Another team member, Harnam Singh, developed symptoms of high-altitude sickness, including vomiting and chest pain. Despite these grave challenges and the limited availability of medical support in the region, the researchers showed remarkable grit, continuing their mission with the aid of portable oxygen cylinders and prescribed medication. The team has also been deeply engaging with local communities, including village water committees, tribal groups, and especially women, to gather nuanced insights into the actual functioning of the Jal Jeevan Mission on the ground. The findings indicate that in several villages, residents continue to rely on glacial melts, springs, and age-old storage tanks for water, with piped supply often proving inconsistent and seasonal. The research emphasises the significance of blending traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary water delivery mechanisms to achieve sustainable outcomes. The overarching objective of the study is to develop a policy framework that is context-sensitive and sustainable, aligning with the environmental, hydrological, and cultural specificities of the region. The focus is on integrating perennial traditional sources with piped infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted access to potable water in these high-altitude Himalayan settlements. "Our effort is not just to assess policy performance but to co-create a realistic and integrated model that considers the region's geographical challenges, local water wisdom, and community participation for long-term water sustainability in Ladakh," said Sharma.
