The St. Louis Cardinals are riding quite a wave that very few saw coming. They have won 6 of their last 7 games and took the first two games of a four-game set with the NL central-leading Chicago Cubs.

One of the great stories in this MLB season is the Cardinals' surprising success, after many wrote them off coming into the season in a competitive division.
Nolan Arenado made his thoughts clear on the Cardinals run, siding with the minds of most fans.
'I didn't expect us to be winning like this, at this point,' Arenado told MLB.com beat writer John Denton after Tuesday night's win, 'I expected us to play hard, I thought we were going to be good defensively and I thought our pitching would be fine. … Just seeing everyone one-through-nine contributing, I mean I like playing baseball like this … against the Cubs … where games matter.'

Almost everyone contributed on the offensive side in the Cardinals electric 8-7 victory; all but Arenado, who went 0-for-4. but that said, his defense still helped guide the team to the win and sent the fans home with as much hope as ever.

It means more to the veteran to play at a highly competitive level of baseball this deep into the season. It has him feeling that they may have a shot at playing for high stakes on the big stage.
'As you get older, that's what you want. You don't want to play games just to play games. Individually, I've accomplished some things in this game and I want to accomplish something team-oriented and special and win a World Series. Games like this, it's easy to wake up for. This is the most excited [that] I've come to the ballpark for – this series – in about two years.'
Despite playing in his 13th season, Arenado has not seen too much of the postseason. He played in the NLDS with the Colorado Rockies in 2018, but he has not seen past the wild card round in his time with the Cardinals.
As the league stands with under a week until July, the Cardinals are eight games above .500 and just 2.5 games out of first place with 82 games to go.

That was a boost of confidence for the running back, who said he'll be back to training as usual during the summer break, and to a 49ers offense that missed McCaffrey last season, especially in the red zone." To the man himself, this isn't a surprise. He has always stated his mission of being a full participant in minicamp and the upcoming training camp. McCaffrey - an unfortunately frequent visitor of the rehabilitation department throughout his career - acknowledged that he's learned how to recovery and had to "start from scratch" in order to return to optimal health. With an offense that surrounds him with multiple weapons, McCaffrey may not need to return to an MVP-caliber level, but of course, Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers will take the best that he has to offer. ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ian Happ hit a leadoff home run and drove in three, Matthew Boyd gave up three hits in six scoreless innings and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-0 on Wednesday night. Reese McGuire and Kyle Tucker also homered for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Boyd (7-3), who struck out three and did not issue a walk, has allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last six starts. Last season during his extensive contract holdout, San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk was the subject of endless trade chatter - however likely or unlikely those actions were actually being put in motion internally. Since Aiyuk's unfortunate ACL injury in Week 7 of the 2024 season, however, waves of trade speculation and rumored disputes between the player and team have resurfaced. Now Aiyuk is putting that noise on blast. Or ... at least a portion of the noise. On his personal YouTube channel, Aiyuk responded to comments about the trade rumors that spawned during the season right after his surgery: "They was talking bout trading me while I was off percocets /muscle relaxers and peeing in a cup by my bed! Couldn't walk for 10 weeks ain't nobody trading for me 🤣💀" Advertisement Not only was Aiyuk tied to a long-term (and high-dollar) contract, but he was injured for the rest of the season. It's an easy timeline to follow that explains why he was not traded. That thought process holds today as Aiyuk is still inactive from offseason workouts, with his expected return to the field well beyond the start of the season. While he was poking some humor about no team pursuing him in a trade, this could be another way of him telling fans to knock off the recent speculation, as well. Aiyuk being able to laugh at his situation should be taken as a sign of positivity to not only quieting trade talks, but to giving an optimistic report of his recovery and mental state. Advertisement When healthy, Aiyuk is a fantastic receiver who is plenty capable of being an elite offense's No. 1 option. When he isn't, of course, trade-hungry sharks will subside. If Aiyuk can return near the midway point of the 2025 season, barring health across the rest of the roster, San Francisco will be poised to return to championship contention like they did in 2023. Last season's unfortunate injury fate, to Aiyuk and others, lessened their odds of making the playoffs - let alone another Super Bowl. Any possibility of a trade at that point must be determined by numerous factors. First, how he performs back on the field. The indication is that Aiyuk and his contract will stay in the Bay Area. He is the last major piece working back to full health on this explosive Niners offense that, once he returns, is expected to wreak havoc.
