New Jersey native Jen Pawol to become first woman to umpire an MLB game
She will be on the bases during a doubleheader on Saturday between the Braves and Marlins at Truist Park in Atlanta and behind the plate for the series finale on Sunday.
Pawol, 48, was born and raised in West Milford, N.J., before playing softball and soccer at Hofstra University on Long Island.

After playing catcher in college and umpiring for more than a decade at the amateur level, Pawol made her umpiring debut in the minors in the Gulf Coast League in 2016.
In 2023, she worked at the Triple-A level, becoming the first woman to umpire at Triple-A in 34 years.

Last year, Pawol became the first female to umpire a spring training game since 2007 before being placed on MLB's Umpire Call-Up list.

'I love being on the field the whole time. It's in my DNA,' Pawol told MLB.com before her spring training debut in 2024. 'Catching and playing multiple sports throughout my career, catching a little bit on the side and things like that, all of that has culminated to help me be ready to be an umpire. This is my 18th year — 10 in amateur and eight now in pro. It's just sort of all coming together and once I started umpiring, I said, 'This is for me.' I can't explain it.'

MLB is the third of the four major American sports leagues to have a female game official, following the NBA 28 years ago and the NFL 10 years ago.
'This is a viable career becoming a professional umpire – men and women, girls and boys,' Pawol said last year. 'I didn't know that the first several years when I got into umpiring in amateur ball for 10 years.'

Love the Mariners (-295) to complete the sweep on Thursday, but I'll take my wager to the run line with the better odds. Run line/Against the spread BET MARINERS -1.5 (-125). The Mariners enter Thursday's series finale as heavy favorites—and for good reason. They've dominated the season series against the White Sox, winning 4 of 5 matchups, including the first 2 games of this set by scoring 8 runs in each. Seattle is also 33-25 at home, backed by a strong 3.43 team ERA at T-Mobile Park, which ranks sixth in MLB. The Mariners have won 5 of their last 6 games and are gaining ground in the AL West as they chase down the Astros. Meanwhile, the White Sox are trending in the opposite direction, dropping 3 straight and continuing to struggle on the mound. Thursday's starter, Smith, hasn't picked up a win since June 10. With momentum, pitching, and home-field advantage on their side, Seattle is well-positioned to finish the sweep and keep pushing toward the top of the division. Over/Under OVER 7.5 (-105). The Over has hit in the last 3 meetings between the Mariners and White Sox, including both games in this series. It's also 6-2-2 in Chicago's last 10 games and has cashed in Seattle's last 4. With the Mariners rolling offensively, they may clear the 7.5 total on their own. The Over is the play. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! Barcelona strips Ter Stegen of captaincy for refusing to sign medical report
MADRID (AP) — Barcelona has temporarily stripped goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen of the captaincy over his refusal to sign a medical report about his back injury. The club said Thursday that central defender Ronald Araujo will act as first-team captain until further notice. 'Following the disciplinary proceedings opened against player Marc-André ter Stegen, and until this matter is definitively resolved, the club, by mutual agreement with the sporting direction and the coaching staff, has decided to temporarily withdraw his role as first-team captain,' Barcelona said in a statement. The club had opened a disciplinary proceeding against the goalkeeper on Tuesday after discrepancies about the recovery time for the lower back surgery that Ter Stegen successfully underwent last week. Barcelona needed him to sign the injury report so it could be sent to the Spanish league in order to clear some salary-cap space and allow the club to more easily register other players without breaching financial fair play rules. Ter Stegen said ahead of the surgery that the recovery time would be about three months. The club did not give an official timetable for the recovery process, saying only that the operation was 'successful" and that 'his recovery will determine when he can return.' Depending on the length of the recovery process, Barcelona could clear a percentage of Ter Stegen's salary from its cap, making more room to add other players to the squad. The league has to evaluate the report before approving the official time of recovery. The club signed Espanyol goalkeeper Joan García in June. Its other goalkeepers are veteran Wojciech Szczęsny and Iñaki Peña. Ter Stegen met briefly with Barcelona officials this week, according to Spanish media. The 33-year-old German goalkeeper missed nearly all of last season because of a ruptured tendon in his knee, and in 2023 he missed about two months because of another back operation. Peña and the 35-year-old Szczęsny started in place of Ter Stegen last season. ___

Former Mavericks Assistant Marko Milic Says Americans Can't Accept Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic's Dominance
Former Mavericks Assistant Marko Milic Says Americans Can't Accept Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic's Dominance originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Former Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Marko Milic has finally broken his silence after leaving the franchise earlier this year, and his comments have sparked a powerful conversation about bias, perception, and what it means to be 'the best' in the NBA today. Milic, who worked closely with Luka Doncic during his three years in Dallas, made it clear in recent interviews that he believes Americans have a hard time accepting the dominance of European stars like Doncic and Nikola Jokic, precisely because they don't fit the league's traditional athletic mold. "I am not like the Americans who follow their own criteria. Regardless of what was criticized, Luka was the best scorer in the league, he really had top seasons." "In simple terms, they find it difficult to understand that Luka and Jokić are the best players in the world, because they are not according to their athletic standards, but mentally, technically, tactically and with a smile on their face they dominate the league and that is why they are always looking for something." "They will surely find something else even now, when he looks like a model." Milic was candid in expressing his frustrations with the double standards he believes European players face. That belief isn't unfounded. Jokic is a three-time MVP and NBA champion who dismantled some of the league's most physical teams using his unmatched vision, footwork, and IQ. Doncic, meanwhile, led the league in scoring, has five All-NBA First Team selections before the age of 26, and recently transformed his body into peak condition during the offseason. Milic argued that while American fans and media often measure greatness through speed, vertical leap, or physique, Doncic and Jokic win through something far more dangerous: mentality and technical brilliance. He also criticized the persistent narrative around Luka's conditioning. Now that Doncic has slimmed down and elevated his fitness with a meticulous offseason routine, including intermittent fasting, sugar reduction, and protein-focused training, Milic joked that critics will simply find a new reason to doubt him. Milic's departure from Dallas came after Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in what is already being remembered as one of the most seismic trades in NBA history. Alongside Luka, his personal trainer Anze Macek also left the Mavericks. Despite early rumors, Milic did not join the Lakers' staff, instead returning to Slovenia to take on a role focused on youth development with the national basketball federation. Still, his connection with Doncic remains strong, both personally and professionally. The assistant coach's comments tap into a larger cultural conversation about how basketball greatness is defined. In an era that often celebrates raw athleticism, Milic's defense of cerebral, skill-based dominance is a reminder that basketball is not just a game of physical gifts, but also one of vision, anticipation, and control. And in that arena, Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic are rewriting the rules of what it means to be elite.
