Private hire drivers 'go where's easiest' for licence
Burnham has called on the government to step in with new national laws to tackle the issue where local authorities across England can issues licences to drivers regardless of where they are from or plan to work. Each also has different rules on requirements like training, tests on geography, and enhanced safety checks. It is as issue that has caused growing frustration for Manchester taxi drivers, where close to half of those in the trade are licensed elsewhere. Sham Raja of the Manchester branch of the National Private Hire and Taxi Association, Manchester branch, said it was a "big problem". He said: "We have been flooded, they do not follow the rules or regulations, and now there is no work in the city centre."They should be working in their own boundaries, they are licensed there and that's where they should be working."
Mr McNamara said: "In some authorities, it's very easy to get a licence, and in others it's not, and so the less reputable elements will go and get a licence in the easiest area and then come and work somewhere else."Mr Ashad said in Wolverhampton, where more than 10% of all taxis in England are licensed, a licensing application costs £89, whereas in Manchester it is £254. He said requirements were also more stringent in Manchester.Mr Ashad said: "Drivers go where is easiest, it's perfectly legal, they don't want to go through the extra testing in Manchester."He said his business had to go for licences elsewhere in the past as the process was faster, meaning he could recruit drivers more quickly.

Arsenal make decision on seven exits as Mikel Arteta steps up summer rebuild
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is eager to land some blockbuster signings in the summer transfer window to help the Gunners kick on next season but several stars will also be leaving Arsenal are not planning to sell Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard this summer as things stand - but five fringe players are expected to be moved on before the transfer window closes. The Gunners have big plans this summer after finishing second in the Premier League for a third consecutive year and strengthening in attack is a priority. The club are searching for a new No.9 and an elite-level left winger, with further additions in midfield also planned. Talk that Arsenal are looking for new faces in attack has, in turn, sparked speculation over some of Mikel Arteta 's current players. The Mail, however, have outlined that Martinelli and Trossard - two of the players in question - are not up for sale and that Arsenal would like them to stay beyond the transfer window. It's explained that Martinelli would compete with a new left winger, potentially Rodrygo of Real Madrid, rather than being sold to raise funds for more big deals. And Trossard, a player capable of playing in a variety of attacking positions, is also still in Arteta's plans and is even in talks to extend his contract until 2029. But while they are seemingly safe from the chop, a handful of other first-team stars are available for transfer including Fabio Vieira, who will return to Arsenal after spending the 2024-25 campaign on loan with his former club, FC Porto. It emerged last week that they will not be pursuing a permanent deal for a player who flourished for them in the Portuguese Primeira Liga previously. Join the debate! What transfer business do you think Arsenal need to do this summer? Let us know here Other players who could depart Arsenal this summer include Reiss Nelson and Oleksandr Zinchenko, both of whom earn in excess of £100,000-a-week according to the same report. Both players have been linked with Fulham while Zinchenko is also understood to have suitors in Europe. Albert Sambi Lokonga and Jakub Kiwior are the other two stars mentioned as potential outgoings - even though Kiwior impressed during the back end of last season. The Poland international is likely to find himself further down the pecking order, though, if Arsenal are successful in their pursuit of the Valencia defender, Cristhian Mosquera. O2 confirms UK network switch off and the exact date your phone may stop working
O2 is slowly switching off its ageing 3G network and these are the areas that are next for the axe. If you own an ageing smartphone, you may soon need to switch to something new. All of the UK's biggest mobile networks have been slowly turning off access to 3G and that means devices that can't connect to newer 4G and 5G signals could lose access to data and all-important services such as WhatsApp. Virgin Media O2 is the latest of the big four UK providers to announce the closure of this 3G platform with the company confirming that areas including Norwich, Telford and Guildford will be shut down from July 16. Torquay will the follow on August 4. The whole of the UK should then lose access by the end of the year. The closure is part of O2's longer-term plans to deliver faster and more reliable 4G and 5G connectivity for customers. '3G services in those areas will be switched off in the coming weeks, and those who currently don't have a 4G or 5G device must upgrade to a compatible handset in order to retain access to mobile data services,' Virgin Media O2 said. O2 is a little behind its rivals. Vodafone, Three and EE have already completed their 3G switch-off with customers no longer able to access this slower signal. Luckily, most modern phones won't have any issues and it's only very old call makers that could suffer from connection problems. 'While the vast majority of customers will not need to take any action, the operator is directly contacting all customers across the UK who currently don't have a 4G or 5G device to provide support,' a Virgin Media O2 spokesperson said in an email. 'Customers can visit their local O2 store for further information and support, and they are also reminded they can use O2 Recycle to responsibly and sustainably dispose of their old handsets in exchange for cash." 3G first launched in the UK all the way back in 2003. It's since been superseded by 4G and 5G technolgy which is more reliable and a lot faster. Those with 3G will only be able to access downloads at speeds of under 5Mbps. 5G takes this well beyond 100Mbps which makes it perfect for modern needs such as streaming on the move.
