A powerhouse lineup of speakers is set to headline the much-anticipated Business to Brand Summit, taking place on August 1, 2025, in Sandton.
Spearheaded by Pat Mahlangu, founder of Pat on Brands, Youth Owned Brands Awards (YOBAs), and Lerato Agency, the summit is poised to become a landmark moment for South Africa's marketing and business community.
The summit is promoted as more than just a conference, with the stated goal of changing business owners' and leaders' perspectives from transactional, short-term thinking to brand-led, long-term plans.
With a focus on deep, actionable insights, the event will bring together marketers, communicators, entrepreneurs, and visionaries who understand that branding is not just about logos and slogans; it's about purpose, trust, and impact.
Headlining the event are some of South Africa's most influential characters. The dynamic lineup boasts acclaimed radio personality Sbusiso 'DJ Sbu' Leope, the innovative founder and CEO of Legends Barbershop, Sheldon Tatchell, and Bulelani Balabala, widely known as the 'Township Go-To Guy' and a celebrated entrepreneur and author.
Together, they promise to bring a wealth of experience and unique perspectives to the summit.
Mahlangu, who reveals that he started Pat on Brands nearly a decade ago as a student blog fuelled by passion, tells Saturday Star that what began as a personal project has since evolved into a multi-dimensional media platform with events, thought leadership, and recognition programs such as the Youth-Owned Brands Awards (YOBAs).
Inspired by media veteran Jeremy Maggs and his show Maggs on Media, Mahlangu says he envisioned a platform that would celebrate and critique brands, offering what he called 'Pats and Slaps' to industry players.
'I founded Pat on Brands while I was still a university student, with no access to the industry, no network, and no established credibility. At the time, I was an unknown voice in a space dominated by seasoned professionals, and many questioned whether I had the authority to comment on brands at all. Some wouldn't even give me the time of day. But that doubt never discouraged me; it fuelled me.'
Through resilience and vision, Mahlangu transformed Summit into a trusted voice in the branding space, especially among South Africa's emerging business leaders.
He further reveals that the key to his mission, he says, has been understanding the critical distinction between simply running a business and building a brand.
'There is a fundamental difference between a business and a brand. A business often operates on a transactional level, focused on immediate goals such as sales, margins, and operational efficiency. It's about offering a product or service and making it available to the market. The primary driver is short-term value exchange.'
Looking to the future, Mahlangu envisions expanding Pat on Brands, with aspirations for it to evolve into a television presence featuring its own show and documentaries that highlight inspiring stories of African brands.
'As for the Business to Brand Summit, I see it growing significantly in scale and influence, with future editions hosted in major cities across the African continent.'

This is despite increasing optimism about Africa's potential. 'This statistic should wake us up. Yes, we can see it as doom and gloom, but I choose to see it as an 89% opportunity. The space for us to build brands that Africans admire and support.' The summit tackled this challenge head-on, with keynote speakers, panel discussions, and workshops focused on demystifying branding, marketing strategy, and customer-centric business building. Topics ranged from digital storytelling to brand valuation; all geared towards helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) punch above their weight. Delegates walked away with actionable strategies, valuable insights, and powerful connections. Gqeberha, Palestinian artists unite on stage

The Athenaeum in Gqeberha pulsed with vibrant energy recently when a chorus of voices, movement and music filled the historic venue. NDILAPHA! — Finding My Place in the World , was a powerful youth-led performance and exhibition showcasing the creative outcome of a unique two-week exchange between the Palestinian Circus School and Masifunde ' s Academy of Creativity. Bringing together 40 young artists from SA and Palestine, the project invited participants to explore themes of identity, belonging and shared experience through circus, theatre, music and visual arts. During just 10 days, the group — many of whom had never travelled outside their communities — broke through language and cultural barriers to co-create a deeply personal and political showcase. 'Now I can say that everything is possible when you work things out together,' a 17-year-old participant from Walmer said, reflecting on the collaborative journey which saw teens from vastly different worlds becoming co-performers and friends. For another 17-year-old, from Ramallah, the exchange was both a revelation and a mirror. 'I already knew that people on the other side of the world lived differently from me,' the teenager said. 'But now I also got to see how similar we all are. 'I realised that I can relate to SA youth in so many ways.' Their final performance was a dazzling fusion of physical theatre, circus skills, choir music and spoken word, backed by an exhibition of visual artworks created during the exchange. Together they offered raw, honest insights into the way young people are navigating their worlds — marked by conflict, inequality, resilience and hope. 'I realised the world isn ' t black and white, it ' s colourful — you just need to find the perfect shade,' a 16-year-old participant from Palestine said. Another, aged 17, said: 'When we finished the show I felt so proud of us.' Beyond the stage, the young artists built relationships grounded in mutual respect and curiosity. Daily rehearsals were punctuated with shared meals, storytelling sessions and open discussions which helped dismantle assumptions and build empathy. 'It was a rich human experience which brought together young people from different backgrounds to learn from one another,' Gaza-born facilitator and artist Al Arab Almoughanni said. 'The shared activities and open discussions helped build strong relationships based on respect and appreciation.' At its heart, NDILAPHA! — which means 'I am here' in isiXhosa — became a declaration of presence and purpose. It was less about performance and more about connection, healing and finding one ' s place in a complicated world. The initiative was made possible through support from Masifunde Learner Development, the Palestinian Circus School, and the Civil Peace Service of the GIZ, funded by the German ministry for economic co-operation and development. In a time when borders, both literal and figurative, continue to divide, NDILAPHA! stood as a bold reminder of what is possible when young people come together to listen, learn and create.
