Netflix eye live F1 broadcast rights after Drive to Survive success
The streaming service has played a vital role in growing F1 stateside, with the hugely popular Drive to Survive documentary series expanding the sport's fanbase to include a younger, female demographic.
ESPN currently holds the live rights for F1 in the US but ESPN's exclusivity period to discuss terms with F1 chiefs has now expired.
As a result, Netflix is considering a bid for live streaming rights, as reported by Autosport. Another interesting angle, to what could be a competitive bidding war, is that Netflix hired ESPN's vice president of production Kate Jackson in November to run their live sports content.
The seventh season of Drive to Survive, which has made icons out of the likes of ex-Haas boss Guenther Steiner and F1 race winner Daniel Ricciardo, is set to air prior to the 2025 season starting on 16 March.
Currently, Netflix does not have a contract for any further seasons of Drive to Survive but, given the success of the show for both the streaming service and F1, it would be a huge surprise if it wasn't renewed for another series.
Netflix recently entered the live sports content space with their airing of Mike Tyson's fight against Jake Paul in November, which broke records for the most-streamed sports event of all time.
The service also streamed two NFL fixtures on Christmas Day and, starting last month, has a $5billion 10-year deal to stream WWE.
Netflix also recently won the broadcast rights for the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup in the United States.
F1 now has three races in the United States – Miami, Austin and Las Vegas – and has an American-owned team in Cadillac joining in 2026 as the sport's 11th outfit. Current team Haas is also American-owned.
In the UK, Sky Sports holds the exclusive live rights for F1 until 2029 while free-to-air broadcaster Channel 4 airs highlights.
The 2025 season-opening race, which will be Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari debut, is on 16 March in Australia.

Ex-ESPN host Sage Steele says her close friends publicly attacked her after she sued the sports network
Former ESPN host Sage Steele has opened up about the personal fallout she suffered after filing a lawsuit against the sporting giant in 2022. During an appearance on The Katie Miller Show, Steele said that she saw many of her closest friends turn on her publicly during the legal battle. 'That is literally still the hardest, saddest thing for me,' she said. 'They were in my home, with my children, with my family, with my parents, and for them to not just disappear ... that's one thing. It's another thing to attack [me] publicly, and that's just where I was so confused and shocked,' she explained. 'I'm an emotional person, so I cried a lot.' Steele said that she never wanted or expected her friends to defend her, but she never expected them to turn on her publicly either. Since parting ways with ESPN, Steele has come out as a proud supporter of President Donald Trump and was even part of his 2024 campaign. Her ESPN suspension came in part due to her comments about former President Barack Obama. During a podcast appearance with Jay Cutler, Steele stated she did not like Obama calling himself Black because, like herself, he has a white mother. Steele eventually left ESPN last year after settling a lawsuit against the company, claiming it censored her free speech. She later claimed during her time at ESPN that the network asked her not to talk about transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. Thomas represented the University of Pennsylvania as a male athlete before transitioning to compete as a woman. She went on to win a female national championship. Steele was among those who voiced their opposition on social media to Thomas and other biological males competing in women's sports. Steele also spoke out after ESPN fired her friend Sam Ponder last year. 'This is another loss for ESPN, but it is a gain for literally the rest of the world because now you're going to see the true Sam Ponder,' Steele said on social media at the time. Since parting ways with ESPN, Steele has carved out a niche for herself in conservative media. She hosts a conservative podcast on Bill Maher's network and has also worked with the Daily Wire. Steele was one of the first people that White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt invited to sit in the 'new media' seat in the White House briefing room, a seat near the front of the room that was previously reserved for staff. She asked Leavitt about how much the president would pressure the U.S. Senate to move on a a House-passed bill that bars transgender athletes from participating in women's sports. Her early February appearance in the briefing room was timed to coincide with Trump signing an executive order on the same topic. Steele has also formed a close friendship with Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and came to support her on Capitol Hill during the ex-congresswoman's Senate confirmation hearings. Steele was one of the first guests on Stephen Miller's wife Katie's new podcast, The Katie Miller Show. Miller, who has been married to Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller since 2020, launched the podcast this week with Vice President JD Vance as her first guest. Announcing the project, Miller said, 'For years, I've seen that there isn't a place for conservative women to gather online, and so I wanted to create that space.' Miller previously served as a spokesperson for the Department of Government Efficiency under Elon Musk before departing to start her podcast. The interview will air on Monday at 6pm ET.
