Brazil central bank still assessing if 15% interest rate is appropriate, says official

Reuters5 hours ago
BRASILIA, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Brazil's central bank is still assessing whether the benchmark interest rate at 15% is appropriate to bring inflation down to its 3% target, economic policy director Diogo Guillen said on Monday.
Policymakers kept rates unchanged in late July at a near 20-year high after 450 basis points in hikes since last September. They signaled borrowing costs would remain steady for a "very prolonged" period.
Speaking at an event hosted by Warren Investimentos, Guillen stressed that the guidance signaled more rate holds.
"We are still evaluating whether this is the appropriate rate to bring inflation to target," he said. "Once that rate is determined, it will remain unchanged for a very long period."
Guillen acknowledged recent downside surprises in consumer prices readings, but said the key issue with inflation is it remains above target, with expectations and projections also unanchored from the official goal.
Prices were up 5.23% in the 12 months through July, down from 5.35% in the previous month and below forecasts.
Guillen emphasized economic growth is losing steam, as expected following the central bank's tightening stance.

Chinese firms in legal battle over Brazil food delivery

SAO PAULO, Aug 18 (Reuters) - A Brazilian subsidiary of China's ride-hailing company DiDi Global (92Sy.D), opens new tab sued Chinese rival Keeta on Monday in a Sao Paulo court alleging trademark infringement and unfair competition, according to court documents seen by Reuters. The lawsuit comes days after Keeta, which is entering the Brazilian market, sued DiDi's Brazilian unit, 99, in Brazil, alleging its food delivery app 99Food was trying to restrict restaurants from working with more than two delivery platforms. In Monday's lawsuit, 99 accused Keeta, owned by Chinese delivery giant Meituan ( opens new tab, of using colors, graphics and font similar to 99's platform to "catapult its commercial operations" in the Brazilian market. "The numerous visual similarities ... induce undue consumer confusion and the defendants seek to 'hitch a ride'" on 99's success, the lawsuit said, requesting the court order Keeta to change its logo. In a statement to Reuters, Keeta said its logo and colors have been associated with Meituan for over 14 years and Keeta itself for the past three years. 99 declined to comment.

Peru hopes to attract investment with tax cuts and sustain agro-export boom, minister says

LIMA, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Peru hopes to increase agricultural investment with a significant reduction in income tax for large export companies, the sector's minister told Reuters on Monday. The Peruvian Congress last week passed a law that reduces income tax to 15% from the current 29.5% for large agricultural exporters over the next 10 years. Medium-sized businesses would pay 1.5% income tax, while small businesses would be exempt from the tax. Peru expects agricultural sales to surpass mining, considered the country's economic engine, by 2050. Peru is the world's third-largest copper producer. "This will allow us to attract investment," said Agriculture Minister Ángel Manero in a telephone interview, of the new law. The country recorded $12.8 billion in agricultural exports last year, and Manero expects increased fruit shipments to drive sales to about $15 billion by 2025. The star product of Peruvian agricultural exports is blueberries, which are exported primarily to the United States and Europe. Minister Manero also highlighted the sharp increase in sales of table grapes, avocados, cocoa, and mangos. Peru has a portfolio of approximately $24 billion in largely public-private irrigation projects to expand its agricultural area, primarily on the country's coast, to more than 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres). Manero said that eight projects worth $11 billion have been launched from that portfolio. Manero noted that the next market to conquer is India, with which a free trade agreement is expected to be signed this year. Peru last week announced a new trade deal with Indonesia.
