Google rolls out AI mode search in India, powered by Gemini 2.5
Google has officially launched its AI Mode search experience in India, bringing advanced, natural search capabilities to users through voice, visuals, and text. Initially piloted in the U.S., this experimental feature is now accessible in English via Search Labs—a platform that allows users to try early Google Search features and provide feedback.
Once activated, AI Mode introduces a dedicated tab in the Google app and search interface. It leverages the powerful Gemini 2.5 model to enhance reasoning and allow for more complex, multi-step queries. Users can input questions through typing, voice commands, or even images, enabling deeper and more intuitive interactions with Search.
This rollout is especially significant in India, where voice and visual search see widespread use. Hema Budaraju, Vice President of Product Management for Search at Google, noted that India leads globally in monthly Google Lens usage. AI Mode is part of Google's mission to make information universally accessible—regardless of how users choose to ask.
The feature also enables follow-up questions and provides links to diverse sources, offering multiple perspectives on any topic. This aligns with the growing trend of users seeking not just answers, but richer understanding.
Google highlighted that more than 1.5 billion people globally now interact with AI Overviews each month. These AI-generated summaries—featured at the top of search results—have led to a 10% increase in engagement for certain query types in both India and the U.S.

Karnataka government schoolkids to get online learning resources from Khan Academy
Bengaluru: In what could be the biggest digital intervention project for govt school students in the state, the department of school education and literacy has entered into an MoU with US-based not-for-profit Khan Academy to offer online learning resources to children of classes 6-II PU. With this, students will have access to maths, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, and English resources. One hour on Saturdays will be dedicated to using these resources in schools. Students and teachers will be given a login ID, mobile app, and access to KhanMigo artificial intelligence tool free of cost. The account can be used throughout their lives free of cost. "Teachers should guide students to use vast learning resources on the portal, the practice tests and skills, and revision modules for supplemental understanding, clarification of concepts, achieving higher learning levels, self-study for competitive examinations, etc. The teachers will also train students of classes 8-II PU on how to use the KhanMigo artificial intelligence tool, which itself will work as a digital tutor," said an official. "This will enable teachers to upgrade/refresh their skills and subject knowledge, use content for quizzes, tests, use KhanMigo as a teaching assistant, prepare lesson plans for classes, etc. It is a win-win situation for all," the official said. The contents are also expected to help in preparation for competitive exams. The project is expected to help 15.9 lakh students in 26,597 govt schools and about 3.1 lakh students from 1,229 govt PU colleges. The contents are in sync with National Council of Educational Research and Training textbooks, which are used by the state syllabus schools. The department officials said the data on the Student Achievement Tracking System (SATS) regarding the availability of functional computers is wrong and misleading; most schools have the infrastructure. "If not a computer, all schools have digital boards on which the content can be projected from a mobile. This year, Rs 35 crore is allotted in the state budget and separately under Samagra Shikshana each for digital boards/computers," said the official. The govt order states no grant will be released to Khan Academy for the implementation of this programme.

Gemini CLI debuts as Google's open-source AI coding assistant: How it works
Alphabet Inc.'s Google has unveiled a new artificial intelligence-powered coding assistant called Gemini CLI (Command Line Interface), designed to streamline the development process by allowing users to interact with their systems through natural language. The global launch signals Google's intent to close the gap with competing AI tools such as OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude Code. Announced on Wednesday, Gemini CLI is positioned as an open-source tool that brings the capabilities of Google's Gemini AI directly to the terminal, the text-based interface widely used by developers. It enables users to perform a variety of tasks using conversational commands, ranging from writing and debugging code to building simple websites or even generating videos. "With Gemini CLI, you can have a natural language conversation with your computer to solve problems and weave complex workflows together, to do far more than was previously possible," said Taylor Mullen, Senior Staff Software Engineer at Google, during a press briefing. One of the defining features of Gemini CLI is its open-source nature. Google said the decision reflects a broader goal of democratising access to AI tools, enabling developers to inspect, adapt, and contribute to the codebase. This move also supports transparency, allowing users to understand the mechanics of the tool and assess its security. Gemini CLI builds on Google's existing legacy of open AI development, including the TensorFlow engine and several foundational transformer models, the architecture behind leading AI systems like ChatGPT. The launch of Gemini CLI also follows Google's recent release of Gemma, its open large language models made publicly available earlier in 2024. These efforts point to a shift in strategy, with the tech giant increasingly engaging with external developers after years of keeping much of its proprietary AI under wraps. Gemini CLI users with personal Google accounts will be granted a free Gemini Code Assist licence, offering access to the Gemini 2.5 Pro model. This tier includes a generous usage limit of up to 60 requests per minute and 1,000 per day. Paid plans expand those limits to 120 requests per minute and 1,500 per day, while enterprise users can make up to 2,000 requests daily. Ryan J.
