Ditto for 2009's 500 Days of Summer: It may have been about millennials and for millennials, but carried themes about the pursuit of love that any fortysomething could relate to.
And, so, we arrive at Celine Song's Materialists which is a deconstruction of the singledom that's absolutely now, steeped in its social media marketability and posh wants, but at the end of the day it's the raw, shabby, sincere form of love which wins out. In turning the romcom on its head (though Jane Austen's Emma does come to mind), Dakota Johnson plays Lucy, a high-end matchmaker in NYC who contends with her clients lofty wants in a mate. Lucy, who knows everything there is about marketability in the game of courtship, falls for the ultimate unicorn in Pedro Pascal's ultimate rich dude, Harry. But then Lucy's ex, John (an amazing, no-holds-barred Chris Evans) reenters the picture. He doesn't have Harry's wallet, but, man, he knows what makes Lucy tick (beer and soda).
Before she was an Oscar nominated filmmaker, Song was a matchmaker ten years ago.
'I learned more about people in those six months, than in any other part of my life,' she tells us today on Crew Call.
Though she doesn't consider herself an expert on love, you can't deny her knowledge. Move over, Leo Buscaglia.
'Love is a completely mysterious thing that we don't have a solution for,' says Song about the difference between dating and finding the love of your life.
'Love is something that humbles us, that ask us to surrender, it's the one that asks us to be our purist, most simple self,' Song shares, 'When love is offered to you, all you can say is 'Deal'. You can say 'Yes, deal. I want this love in my life.'
Materialists opens this Friday.

Spaceballs 2 Cast Adds Returning Stars & Keke Palmer Ahead of 2027 Release
Spaceballs 2 officially has a release date window, with Amazon MGM Studios announcing that Rick Moranis, Mel Brooks, and more will return for the sequel to the cult classic comedy movie. According to a new report from Variety, Amazon MGM Studios has scheduled Spaceballs 2 for a theatrical release sometime in 2027. Alongside that news, the company also announced that Mel Brooks — who wrote, directed, and starred in the 1987 original film — would be returning for the film, as would Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman, who played Dark Helmet and Lone Starr in the original, respectively. The returning trio wasn't the only casting news, though. Deadline also reported that Keke Palmer was joining the cast of the Josh Gad-led sequel. It's currently unclear who Palmer will be playing, and also unclear what the plot for the sequel will be. In a video on social media confirming the film's release date window, Brooks joked about just how many franchises have come out in the 38 years since Spaceballs. According to reports last year, Spaceballs 2 is set to be directed by Josh Greenbaum with a screenplay from Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. A parody of Star Wars, Spaceballs starred Pullman as Lone Starr, John Candy as Barf, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, Joan Rivers as the voice of Dot Matrix, and Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet. Brooks also played President Skroob and Yogurt in the film. 'In a distant galaxy, planet Spaceball has depleted its air supply, leaving its citizens reliant on a product called Perri-Air,' the synopsis for Spaceballs reads. 'In desperation, Spaceball's leader President Skroob (Mel Brooks) orders the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to kidnap Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) of oxygen-rich Druidia and hold her hostage in exchange for air. But help arrives for the Princess in the form of renegade space pilot Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf (John Candy).' ‘How To Train Your Dragon' Reviews: Does Remake Breathe Fire With Critics?
Toothless and Hiccup (Mason Thames) in "How to Train Your Dragon." The family adventure How to Train Your Dragon, starring Gerard Butler, Mason Thames and Nico Parker, is new in theaters. Do critics think you should hit a ride with the live-action remake of the 2010 animated hit? Rated PG, How to Train Your Dragon opens in theaters everywhere on Friday. The official summary for the film reads, 'On the rugged isle of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations, Hiccup (Thames) stands apart. The inventive yet overlooked son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Butler, reprising his voice role from the animated franchise), Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, a feared Night Fury dragon. Their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons, challenging the very foundations of Viking society. 'With the fierce and ambitious Astrid (Parker) and the village's quirky blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost) by his side, Hiccup confronts a world torn by fear and misunderstanding. As an ancient threat emerges, endangering both Vikings and dragons, Hiccup's friendship with Toothless becomes the key to forging a new future. As of Thursday, How to Train Your Dragon has earned a 78% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 139 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, 'Crafted with loving fidelity to the animated classic by original co-director Dean DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon doesn't best the first iteration but still reaches enchanting heights of its own.' The RT Popcornmeter score voted on verified users is still pending. Brandon Yu of The New York Times is among the top critics on RT who gives How to Train Your Dragon a 'fresh' rating, writing in his review summary, 'To be sure, this new iteration is entertaining, bears a sense of heart and brings a tight script of fantasy and friendship to life.' Bob Mondello of NPR also gives the film a 'fresh' review on RT, writing in his summary, 'Toothless is as charismatic as ever; the flying sequences and natural landscapes are appropriately breathtaking, and if the film is overly enamored of lesser dragons belching fire at incoherently bellowing Norsemen, well, so was the original.' In addition, Helen O'Hara of Empire Magazine gives How to Train Your Dragon a 'fresh' review, although she has some reservations, noting in her RT summary, 'It's clearly made with real love and care, but shows far too much deference to its progenitor. Even in a remake, we need more originality and less playing the hits.' HOW? It's truly a mystery.' Also giving How to Train Your Dragon a 'rotten' review on RT is David Fear of Rolling Stone, who writes, 'What this movie is actually trying to accomplish, beyond a shadow of a doubt, is how to train their audiences to keep buying the same thing over, and over, and over again.'
