Documentary Celebrating Ilon Specht, McCann Copywriter Behind L'Oréal Paris' Iconic Tagline Who Started a Feminist Movement of Self Worth, Takes Home Five Cannes Lions
Win Marks McCann's 3rd Grand Prix in the Film Category and First Ever Lions' Honors for Two-Time Oscar® - Winning Director Ben Proudfoot and Second Grand Prix for TRAVERSE32
CANNES, France, June 24, 2025 /CNW/ -- "THE FINAL COPY OF ILON SPECHT," an emotional and cinematic tribute to the woman behind one of advertising's most enduring taglines, has won the Grand Prix in the Film category at the 2025 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
Directed by two-time Academy Award® and current Emmy® winner Ben Proudfoot, the 17-minute documentary honors Ilon Specht, the trailblazing McCann copywriter whose four words - "Because I'm Worth It" - empowered generations of women globally and helped to build L'Oréal Paris into the largest beauty brand in the world.
"THE FINAL COPY OF ILON SPECHT" is the result of a collaboration between the award-winning global creative agency network McCann, Proudfoot's Breakwater Studios, and production company Traverse 32 for L'Oréal Paris.
The film is an intimate deathbed account of the unsung advertising genius who coined L'Oréal Paris' iconic slogan, a four-word feminist manifesto that, against all odds, changed advertising forever. The documentary chronicles Specht's extraordinary life - from her deeply personal relationship with her step-daughter, Alison Case, to the moment she forever upended the male-dominated world of advertising with her revolutionary vision and timeless words.
"Ilon Specht was more than just a copywriter, she was a visionary," said Delphine Viguier-Hovasse, Global Brand President of L'Oréal Paris. "She defied the norms of her time with one bold statement that turned into a global movement. I'm grateful to our partners at McCann who have helped bring her final words to the world in a way that honors her legacy."
Since its world premiere at the 2024 Tribeca X Festival, "THE FINAL COPY OF ILON SPECHT" has been widely celebrated for its craft and cultural significance. It is currently streaming on TED, AMC+, and Prime Video.
The film not only showcases creative and emotional storytelling at the highest level but also perfectly aligns with L'Oréal Paris' ongoing dedication to women's empowerment. As the longest-running brand platform in history - translated into over 50 languages - "Because I'm Worth It" remains a rallying cry for self-affirmation, identity, and agency.
"Ilon's story is the essence of Truth Well Told, an honest, courageous expression that challenged the status quo of advertising, reshaped how women see themselves, and changed how brands speak to women," said Charlotte Franceries, CEO of McCann Paris. "We're celebrating Ilon's legacy, but we're also helping people understand what 'Because I'm Worth It' really means to women all over the world.
"The most powerful truths, the ones that transcend time and become universal, are also the most personal, those that come from the guts," said Javier Campopiano, Global Chief Creative Officer of McCann Worldgroup and McCann. "For Ilon Specht, 'Because I'm Worth It' was much more than a slogan, it was her way to express her anger towards the ethos of the time, and her passion for ideas. That is the reason why those four words she coined 50 years ago have touched so many hearts and are still relevant today."
At this year's Cannes Lions, the film earned five awards:
· GRAND PRIX – Film· GOLD – Entertainment· SILVER – Entertainment, PR· BRONZE – Film Craft
Specht sadly passed away in April 2024. These awards recognize the emotional final statement and are a grand fitting tribute to how she shifted the entire culture with just four words.
The win marks Proudfoot's first Cannes Lions recognition and first Grand Prix. "Many gifted hands shaped this film, but this extraordinary recognition belongs to one person: Ilon Specht. She transformed advertising forever with her words but never won a Lion—until now. I hope this pride of Lions and Grand Prix finds her. A worthy, if belated, triumph. Thank you to the jury, and to L'Oréal Paris, McCann, and TRAVERSE32 for doing what few dare to do: completely trust the filmmakers. That was the magic. As Ilon said, 'It's about humans. It's not about advertising. It's about caring for people," said Proudfoot.
THE FINAL COPY OF ILON SPECHT" is the first collaboration between the award-winning teams at TRAVERSE32, IPG Mediabrands' global branded production company and development studio, and Proudfoot's Breakwater Studios. In addition to directing, Proudfoot produced the film alongside Breakwater Studios' Kirstin Falk and Rachel Greenwald, and TRAVERSE32's Brendan Gaul and Brett Henenberg. Daryl Lee, Global CEO McCann Worldgroup, Charlotte Franceries, President, McCann Paris, & EVP Global Business Leader, L'Oréal Paris, and Julien Calot, Chief Creative Officer, McCann Paris served as executive producers.
The film and campaign have also helped solidify McCann Paris as one of the top-performing agencies at Cannes Lions 2025, with this work contributing significantly to the network's global achievements.
Special recognition should also be paid to Mónica Salazar and Tim Johnson, who were awarded a Bronze Lion in Film Craft for best editing.

Motorica Raises $5.4 Million To Replace Mocap With Generative AI

Every action a character can take must be animated beforehand. Motion capture has long been one of the most expensive and labor-intensive parts of AAA game development. From booking studio time to cleaning data, the process can take weeks and cost studios tens of millions of dollars for a AAA game. A Stockholm-based startup, Motorica, wants to change that. Emerging from stealth today with €5 million ($5.4 million) in seed funding, the company offers a generative AI platform that dramatically accelerates character animation, allowing studios to bypass traditional mocap without sacrificing quality or control. Founder Willem Demmers. 'Studios today spend millions creating realistic animation—and still often only fully animate one character,' said CEO Willem Demmers. 'With our tech, they can animate a hundred.' Demmers, a serial founder in creative tech, partnered with generative AI researcher Gustav Henter and mocap veteran Simon Alexanderson to bring the company's 2019 research prototype to market. The result is what Motorica calls 'motion synthesis': a transformer-based AI model trained on thousands of hours of proprietary motion capture, capable of generating high-fidelity character animation at scale. According to the company, studios using the platform have reported animation workflows running up to 200 times faster than traditional mocap pipelines, with cost reductions exceeding 90 percent. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder David Peterson, partner at Angular Ventures, which led the round, said, 'We invested in Motorica because they're building foundational technology for the next wave of digital experiences—from games and virtual worlds to robotics and XR. Their platform solves a massive production bottleneck.' That bottleneck is well known in the industry. Red Dead Redemption 2 reportedly required more than 300,000 unique animations and cost an estimated $300 million to develop. Developers commonly cite animation as one of the most time-consuming and expensive parts of production. For large open-world games, animation alone can represent 10 to 30 percent of the total budget. Mocap the old fashioned way. Veteran animator Maxi Keller, whose credits include The Last of Us Part II and Call of Duty: WWII, called Motorica 'the best tool out there for locomotion and motion matching.' He emphasized the platform's ability to give creators precise control over speed, acceleration, and expressive nuance, key requirements in gameplay animation. Demmers is careful to position the tool as augmentative rather than disruptive. 'We're not replacing animators or actors,' he said. 'We're replacing their chores.' According to the company, traditional workflows allocate 70 percent of animation time to technical tasks like keyframing and filler cycles. Motorica flips that ratio, allowing artists to focus on narrative, character, and creative polish. The funding round includes participation from Luminar Ventures and angel investors in the gaming space, including founders of major Swedish studios Avalon and Fatshark. The company, which now has 21 employees—over half of them AI researchers—plans to expand rapidly. Roadmap priorities include SDKs for deeper engine integration, new datasets for stylized and non-humanoid motion, and strategic partnerships with virtual production studios and simulation platforms.

'28 Years Later' star Chi Lewis-Parry spills the deets on his massive zombie pole

28 Years Later star Chi Lewis-Parry is talking about the one big thing that's been on everyone's mind since the film premiered last Friday. The long-awaited follow-up to Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later explores how the zombies have evolved after 28 years wreaking havoc on what's left of Great Britain. This includes a variant known as the Alphas, who have grown into massive, hulking, violent creatures beyond even the original terrifying rage virus infectees. Lewis-Parry plays what he calls the "King of the Infected," an Alpha called Samson. Like the other Alphas, Samson lost any use for clothes years ago and spends the film in the buff. And the film does not shy away from unleashing that full-frontal nudity on screen. — (@) During a recent conversation with Variety, Lewis-Parry dug into some of the specifics of those sequences. Namely, the conversation acknowledged the necessity for prosthetics to be used for the benefit of one of 28 Years Later's young stars, Alfie Williams. "There's a law that states, I think, because he's a child, you're allowed to have nudity but it has to be fake nudity," the actor said. "It was to protect him. And, as well, I'm really friendly and am always hugging people. I wouldn't have been doing that if I was fully in the nip!" Of course, even if prosthetics are in play, anytime there's full-frontal male nudity in movies or TV, people still end up curious and clamoring for details of a more personal nature. So when the interviewer asked how Lewis-Parry's prosthetic measures up to the real thing, the former MMA fighter had a cheeky answer ready to go. "Well, I'm 6′ 8″," he replied. "I'll say no more!" The Director of Marvel's ‘X-Men' Movie Just Got Confirmed in the Most Roundabout Way

A new X-Men movie is coming. This much we know to be true. Jake Schreier, director of Marvel's recent film Thunderbolts, is also expected to be directing it. That had yet to be officially confirmed, but io9—and one of Schreier's fellow Marvel directors— both agree that it's true. Speaking to Metro Entertainment about his new show Ironheart, executive producer Ryan Coogler (who also, of course, directed both Black Panther movies) shut down rumors that he could direct a new X-Men movie because 'Jake is directing that.' Jake, as in Jake Schreier, who was in early talks last month. io9 reached out to Marvel about Schreier's involvement, and a spokesperson confirmed the news. Jake Schreier is directing X-Men. And while both we and Coogler have confirmed the X-Men director, someone should tell Schreier. Speaking at a film festival in Malta, reported on by Collider, Schreier was asked if he was directing X-Men and he would not 'fess up. 'Even if I were confirmed on that movie, I don't think I would be allowed to answer that question,' he said. 'I guess what I would say is that it always starts from character and working with great writers and collaborators, and certainly thinking about how to do something different with any project that you take on. That's as much as I can say.' Well, Jake, we'll say it just like Ryan said it. You're directing X-Men. At least for now. There's always the chance things could change before the film goes in front of cameras. And, it might be a good long while before that happens. Marvel is currently in production on only one film, Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to come out next December. Because of that, the studio is not doing a major panel at San Diego Comic-Con this year, which is where news on X-Men could be broken. Will we have to wait a year for more information? That seems possible. But in that time, we now know Schreier is on the case. Want more io9 news?
