Dow ends higher after UnitedHealth gains, other indexes slip on rate cut uncertainty

Reutersa day ago
NEW YORK, Aug 15 (Reuters) - The blue-chip Dow Jones ended higher after hitting an intraday record high on Friday, as UnitedHealth's shares jumped after Berkshire Hathaway raised its stake, but other Wall Street indexes slipped as mixed data clouded the Federal Reserve's next monetary policy move.
A meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin was also on the radar, with markets hoping it could pave the way for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict and determine the outlook for crude prices. The two leaders began a meeting in Alaska on Friday afternoon.
UnitedHealth Group (UNH.N), opens new tab rose sharply after Warren Buffett's company (BRKa.N), opens new tab revealed a new investment in the health insurer, while Michael Burry's Scion Asset Management also turned more bullish on the company.
Rising costs in the broader healthcare sector and about a 40% slump in UnitedHealth's shares this year have left the Dow (.DJI), opens new tab lagging its Wall Street peers on the road to record highs. The price-weighted index last scaled an all-time high on December 4.
The healthcare sector (.SPXHC), opens new tab gained on Friday, tracking its best weekly performance since October 2022.
According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab lost 18.86 points, or 0.29%, to end at 6,449.68 points, while the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC), opens new tab lost 83.99 points, or 0.40%, to 21,626.68. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI), opens new tab rose 43.83 points, or 0.10%, to 44,955.09.
More broadly, Wall Street's main stock indexes recorded their second week of gains, buoyed by expectations that the Fed could restart its monetary policy easing cycle with a 25-basis-point interest rate cut in September.
The central bank last lowered borrowing costs in December and said U.S. tariffs could add to price pressures. However, recent labor market weakness and signs that tariff-induced inflation was yet to reflect in headline consumer prices have made investors confident of a potential dovish move next month.
"The question is, has the tariff gotten into the price of goods yet? And it appears that there hasn't," said Joe Saluzzi, co-head of equity trading at Themis Trading.
Saluzzi also said while markets have largely priced in a September rate cut, investors might be overlooking risks, with low volatility and rich valuations pointing to a sense of complacency.
In a mixed day for economic data, a report showed retail sales in July rose as expected, but consumer confidence and factory production numbers indicated tariffs were taking a toll on other pockets of the economy.
Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee was also cautionary in his remarks.
Trump has said he will unveil tariffs on steel and semiconductors next week.
Among other stocks that were on the move, Applied Materials (AMAT.O), opens new tab tumbled after the chip equipment maker issued weak fourth-quarter forecasts.
Shares of Bank of America (BAC.N), opens new tab dropped after Berkshire Hathaway reduced its stake in the second-biggest U.S. lender by 4.2% to 605.3 million shares. It still owns about an 8% stake in BofA.
Intel (INTC.O), opens new tab surged after a report said the Trump administration was in talks for the U.S. government to potentially take a stake in the chipmaker.

2026 Toyota Camry Trim Matchup: Base LE Vs. Flagship XSE

You have to build these Bronco and Bronco Sport projects yourself if you really want one. Good news is, Ford's selling the parts for you to do just that. The Fenomeno is the latest model to join Lambo's Few Off lineup, limited to just under 30 units worldwide. Ford cut 2026 Explorer prices, but heavy discounts on 2025 models may offer even better deals for buyers willing to skip the newest model year. View post: 2026 Ford Explorer Is Less Expensive — But Should You Get a 2025 Model Instead? Base Camry offers unbeatable value, while top model threatens some premium models Although still early in its life, it's safe to say that the all-new Toyota Camry has been a success. Not only is this hybrid-only sedan highly efficient and good to drive, but it has been performing well on the sales charts, too. If you're considering a new Camry, you may wonder which of the four trims is best. We've already compared the lower two trims, but how different is the entry-level LE to the top-spec XSE, and is the latter worth its $6,200 price premium? Let's find out. Camry LE Vs. XSE Pricing We'll start by looking at the pricing of the 2026 Toyota Camry. It starts at $29,000 for the base LE and goes all the way up to $36,725 for the XSE AWD. Between these trims, there is the SE ($31,300), Nightshade Edition ($32,300), XLE ($34,000), and XSE ($35,200). All these trims are available with AWD. Even after its 2026 price increase, the base Camry LE is tremendous value, but the range-topping XSE adds a number of desirable amenities, aesthetic upgrades, and tech features. Surprisingly, the driving experience is also markedly improved. Design: Rental Car Vibes Vs. Near-Premium Appeal Toyota Camry LE Toyota Camry XSE Sitting on rather small 16-inch wheels and with white paint (other colors are available), the base Camry LE does look a little plain. The XSE immediately makes a better first impression with its 19-inch wheels, a color-keyed sport mesh front grille, gloss-black air curtains, a black rear spoiler, and a color-keyed rear sport lower diffuser. Bi-LED projector headlights are standard on the LE, while the range-topping XSE gets dual LED headlights, premium LED taillights, and a sportier exhaust with dual chrome tips. Although not visible to the naked eye, acoustic noise-reducing front side glass helps to keep noise levels lower in the XSE. Toyota Camry XSE — Source: Toyota The LE is available with a few more interesting colors than the white pictured above, but only the XSE gets access to a color palette with a black contrast roof. These changes don't necessarily make the XSE a better car, but it looks a lot better than the basic LE. Interior: It's Easy To See Where The Extra Cash Goes Toyota Camry LE Toyota Camry XSE All new Camrys get a smartly designed and practical cabin, but there are substantial differences between the base LE and the range-topping XSE. The LE is the only Camry trim with fabric-trimmed seats and manual adjustment for the driver's seat, whereas the XSE gets genuine leather upholstery, eight-way powered front seats, and standard heated seats. Touchpoints like the steering wheel and shift knob have a leather covering in the XSE. In the XSE, you also get the option of a Cockpit Red interior, a much more expressive look than the LE's black or grey interior colors. Toyota Camry XSE — Source: Toyota Other features you get as standard on the XSE but which are not available for the LE include the following: Aluminum sport pedals Paddle shifters White LED ambient interior lighting 12.3-inch touchscreen 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster The LE has a smaller eight-inch touchscreen and seven-inch digital gauge cluster. On the options list, the LE can't be equipped with features like ventilated front seats, a head-up display, a panoramic glass roof, or the upgraded nine-speaker JBL sound system, all of which are available on the XSE. It's inside where one can most tell the difference between the base Camry and the top-of-the-range model. Safety Equipment Source: Toyota The LE matches the XSE in terms of the standard specification. Both trims come standard with eight airbags, blind-spot monitoring, pedestrian detection, radar-based cruise control, lane departure alert, road sign assist, and more. The main difference exists on the options list. Here, you can upgrade the XSE with advanced features such as traffic jam assist, a surround-view monitor, lane change assist, front/rear parking assistance, and front cross-traffic alert. None of these are available on the XSE. Performance: Same Performance, But LE Is More Efficient Than XSE Both the Camry LE and Camry XSE are equipped with the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine. It produces 225 horsepower with front-wheel drive or 232 hp with all-wheel drive, so straight-line performance is comparable regardless of whether you go for the base model or the top one. All models have an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. In our review, we found the Camry to be an excellent drive. The powertrain is quiet and the gas engine kicks in more smoothly than before. There is more of a difference between the LE and XSE when the road begins to twist, though, as only the latter gets sport-tuned shocks and springs. 2026 Toyota Camry — Source: Toyota Whereas the LE prioritizes comfort, the XSE remains tolerable on rough roads but exhibits much tauter steering. Turn-in is more responsive and its body stays flatter through corners, so the XSE is the easy pick for more enthusiastic drivers. Due to its lower weight and smaller wheels, the LE is more efficient, though. With FWD, the base trim gets 53/50/51 mpg city/highway/combined, a superb effort for a spacious sedan. AWD drops that to 51/49/50 mpg. In the sportier XSE, expect 48/47/47 mpg with FWD and 44/43/44 mpg with AWD. When both are equipped with FWD, the LE will get an extra 52 miles per tank, which isn't insignificant. Final Thoughts Toyota Camry XSE — Source: Toyota You can easily make a case for the base Camry or its fully loaded sibling. The LE is incredibly efficient, yet has the same outputs as the pricier XSE. Toyota has also done a good job of equipping the LE with all the essential tech features, whereas the nice-to-haves are reserved for the XSE. The range-topping Camry looks and feels like a much more premium product, and even though it has the same power, we were surprised at how much more engaging it was to drive than the LE. Many top-spec trims come across as superfluous, but that's not the case with the Camry XSE. If you can afford the price bump, it's still a bargain when compared to base midsize sedans from luxury brands. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile

Ford's $30K Electric Pickup Could Crush Jeff Bezos-Backed Rival

One's better for towing, and one uses less fuel but which one's the better truck overall? The electric crossover segment is home to some of the industry's top rivalries, including that of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. With a targeted price tag of just $30,000, the new battery-electric pickup Ford Motor Co. announced this week promises good news for buyers looking for an all-electric truck that won't break the bank. Costing barely half as much as the typical EV sold in the U.S. this year, Ford is betting it will position the automaker as one of the leaders in the EV market. Source: Ford That could be bad news for another brand focused solely on the affordable EV segment, the Jeff Bezos-backed Slate Auto, which in April revealed its own electric pickup it currently expects to start delivering next year at a starting price of $27,000. While Slate would appear to have an advantage when it comes to cost, Ford's 'Universal EV' has lots going for it, with Sam Abuelsamid, chief analyst at Telemetry Research, declaring 'Slate is cooked.' Wanted: an Affordable EV Cadillac Escalade IQ — Source: Cadillac After surging eightfold between 2019 and 2023, EV sales have since lost much of their momentum, market share sliding to just 8.6% at the end of the first half of 2025, according to Cox Automotive data. Part of the problem is that early adopters have largely already gotten the vehicles they want. Further growth depends upon targeting more mainstream buyers. That isn't easy, however, when the average transaction price for an EV was $55,689 in July, according to Kelley Blue Book. For all new vehicles sold in the U.S. last month, the average, or ATP, was $48,401. Complicating matters: the $7,500 federal tax credit many EV customers depended on will go away at the end of the September due to the federal budget bill enacted last month. To kickstart the market, analysts widely agree, means bringing out more new EVs priced in the low $30,000 range, and even below that figure. Universal EV Rendering shows Ford's flexible EV platform which will first be used for a midsize electric pickup. — Source: Ford Ford says it's on track to get there thanks to the secret 'skunkworks' program it set up in Long Beach, California three years ago. A small product development team came up with what they're calling the 'Universal EV.' Echoing what happened when founder Henry Ford switched on his first moving assembly line in 1913, Ford is setting up a completely new manufacturing process at a plant in Louisville, Kentucky. The ultimate goal is to produce an extended family of low-price battery-electric vehicles. In 2027 that will begin with a 4-door pickup with a 'targeted price,' said Ford, of $30,000. Details have yet to be released but Kumar Galhotra, Ford's Chief Operating Officer, made it clear the truck won't be just an econobox. 'We do not believe that you need to strip out features, functionality, screens or even seats to make a vehicle affordable. We will achieve affordability by radically simplifying parts and process.' Slate Has Its Own Plan Slate Auto Skater — Source: Slate Auto Ford is by no means the only automaker feverishly working to shave EV prices. General Motors is readying an all-new version of the Chevrolet Bolt, its first long-range all-electric model set to debut this year. Kia has the EV4 coming, Nissan is finishing work on the next-generation Leaf and Tesla keeps promising its own entry model Then there's Slate Auto, based in the Detroit suburb of Troy. 'We are building the affordable vehicle that has long been promised but never delivered,' CEO Chris Barman said in April as she pulled the cover off an all-electric 2-door pickup. Slate Truck and SUV — Source: Slate Auto As with its more established rival, the Slate team poured over every aspect of automotive design, engineering and manufacturing. The truck's body will be made of unpainted gray polypropylene, rather than the normal steel or aluminum, for one thing. Unlike Ford's electric truck, meanwhile, the Slate model will be the ultimate example of stripping things down to their bare essentials. There'll be no radio, for example, and you'll have to supply the smartphone or tablet if you want an infotainment system. Even the windows will be hand-cranked. Who Has the Edge? 'I like simplifying things and making a lot of things optional for customers,' said analyst Abuelsamid, 'But they've gone too far.' He believes Slate yet may find some buyers looking for hyper-customization – with scores of aftermarket options available, including a cut to convert the pickup into a 2-door SUV. But Abuelsamid and other analysts Autoblog spoke to think most potential buyers will opt for the better-equipped, and only slightly more expensive Ford truck. Just the fact that it has two more doors should be a big plus at a time when 2-door products have all but vanished from the U.S. market. 'That does make Slate a much more difficult proposition,' added Stephanie Brinley, lead auto analyst with S&P Global Mobility. There Could be Surprises While Ford may seem better positioned, industry-watchers aren't ready to count Slate out. For one thing, it is expected to make it to market as much as a year ahead of Ford. And the start-up does have the backing of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and other mega-investors who've so far filled the company's coffers to the tune of around $700 million, according to federal financial documentation. Ford Universal EV production line. But one also has to take the promises made by both companies with a healthy dose of skepticism, cautioned Brinley. 'How many times have we seen automakers set a price target but then end up coming in at $2,000, $3,000, even $5,000 more.' And it remains to be seen, she added, whether either company will meet its planned production date. That's a common problem across the auto industry and Tesla has shown that this is particularly problematic for start-ups. Ford, for its part, is confident it can deliver, and then gain a real leg up on its competitors in the bid to drive down EV prices. The number two U.S. manufacturer is particularly hopeful the Universal EV project will allow it to challenge the domestic Chinese automakers gaining so much traction around the world. Slate isn't ready to concede defeat. Far from it, the start-up automaker claiming to have so far recorded over 100,000 advance reservations for its truck. But there seems little doubt Ford has now changed the rules of the game in the emerging market for truly affordable EVs. About the Author Paul Eisenstein View Profile
